!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to apologize for a brain twist in this video: "ni hai ma geta" are actually called "ni mai ha geta". The Japanese characters are correct, btw. It was just me being too stupid to put the right Japanse pronunciation into English. I am very sorry !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Find out all about kimono footwear... or at least a general overview about geta, zori and kimono with shoes (you never can out everything into one video). This video will show you how to walk, I will talk about how to take care for your Japanese sandals.
Some stores I recommend for geta and zori shopping.

This is a wonderful video I wish had made it before our trip to Japan. We stayed two weeks in Kyoto and on a beautiful afternoon spontaneously decided to declare a "Kimono Day" and went to a rental store (that's what you do when you can't have one made). The shop people were so nice to us. We had a little argument when I said I did NOT want Maiko hairstyle, which I thought was ridiculous on a 71 year old woman. I asked for a more suitable style and they gave me a nice bun on top and fixed my hair so it framed my face a little like a gibson girl. I liked it very much. The biggest problem I had was finding either geta or zori that would fit my American feet. The found some LONG enough, but nothing WIDE enough. I ended up wearing a man's style, which brought on gales of giggles. We encountered a lovely festival full of happy, kimono-clad people. Maybe in other countries wearing the national garb is frowned on for foreigners, but this crowd (hundreds--trust me!) welcomed us, chatted with us, and took picture after picture. You can imagine my 188 cm tall, redheaded husband drew a LOT of attention. It's a day that I wish I could live again. Thank you for an excellent video and a chance to remember a very happy day.

As a child I lived just north of San Francisco Bay. We all called the plastic flip-flops we wore 'zoris'. As we moved to different areas people looked at me strangely when I said zori. I didn't realize why I used that term. It must have been the influence of the Japanese population. Thank you for explaining a child hood memory. Your channel is great and I am working my way through all the episodes.

you didn't really talk about it in the video, but for others that would like to know, having your heel or toes hanging off the edges is okay for geta and zori.. For men's it's a little less noticeable I think cause they tend to be bigger and square, but for women's it's pretty noticeable cause of the oval shape they tend to give them.

Thank you so much for confirming that it's okay (with associated commentary risk) to wear non traditional footwear with kimono and yukata! I find western sandals soooo gorgeous with kimono and yukata, and boots would be amazing with kimono and hakama too! Anyway, I don't think I have the guts yet to wear the western footwear with kimono/yukata, but nice to see that you wear your heeled western sandals with the kimono too. Thank you!

Thank you for another wonderful video! I am starting to become interested in learning to wear kimono, but all over me, I am too large! I'm only 5'4", but very wide and round in my body, and -- relevant to this video -- I have extremely wide feet. So far, the only zori and geta I have found online or in person are very narrow. I know that the tiny toe is supposed to hang off the edge, but my feet are 4.5 inches wide (about 11.4cm), so my fourth and fifth toes both hang off the side. Even men's geta and zori are narrower than they should be for my feet! If that weren't enough, I have had more than ten foot surgeries, so I CANNOT let my toes hang off the edge of sandals without excruciating qualvoll pain. Is there any hope for me? Do you know if anyone in Japan sells such wide geta, zori, or even okobo, or if there is anyone who makes custom shoes? I would like to wear kimono appropriately someday when I can visit my mother-in-law in Japan, and show respect for the traditions. I feel awkward deviating from tradition, because I don't want people to think I am doing it wrong without knowing any better, or that I am disrespecting the proper traditions.

@Snailirific
@Snailirific 4 жыл бұрын
If your zori has those flaps on the underside you can remove the small pins there carefully with some pliers and open them to find the knot. You can then thighten the knot and put everything back together. It's what I do with my zori both when they are too thight and too loose. I usually only do this with the front knot and not the two in the back but it depends on the hanao.

@@BillyMatsunaga Depending on the age of the zori it can be, especially if the pins have rusted a little or if the knot inside is made of plant fiber instead of the usual cotton thread. If you have a pair of zori you are not too fond of with these flaps you can try and see for yourself and practise on them. I often find the hardest bit to be putting the pins back in since they are kind of poking in different directions to stay put.

Hi, I think (some) Japanese (mostly elderly) just find it awkward when you don't wear "wafuku" as a whole "wafuku outfit". Japanese are very good in drawing lines and "yofuku (western clothes)" and "wafuku (Japanese clothes)" are totally different things that shouldn't be mixed up. Luckily that way of thinking is changing step by step. And yes, when you wear geta with jeans today, ppl would also stare at you. Although mixing the shoe types was pretty normal in pre-war Japan.

Hi there. I am in rural NC. Check out and see if there are any local events or groups around Japanese culture( you may be surprised). I started taking ikebana classes near my hometown and ended up being able to wear kimono when I helped my teacher set up for Japanese cultural events and wore yukata to my classes. She was also a certified in tea ceremony and had her own kimono to wear so she was a great help when it came to helping me put outfits together. If you are worried about wearing full on kimono in public just because, you can always incorporate separate items into your wardrobe. I have made skirts out of old kimono fabric, and you can also incorporate things like vintage kanzashi etc.

I know it's a little harder than just saying "Do it" and trusting a stranger, but I know now as a 36 year old that if I could re-live my high school years and wear anything I wanted, I would do it and it would be okay. I've gone from no self esteem in my youth to great confidence and self esteem today. And wearing something that I really like and that makes me feel happy only makes that stronger. Of course, I don't want to look like an idiot who just idolizes another culture or something like that, so you have to throw out that mindset. You know what you know, and the most important thing in my opinion is simply making sure everything fits correctly, because then you can truly feel comfortable. People can tell (to some extent) how you feel about what you are wearing and how you are carrying yourself. I started wearing hair sticks several years ago for example and it made me stand out a lot more before I treated it as a normal thing, I got lots of compliments because they weren't common at all where I lived so it looked unique I assume. Now that I think nothing of it I think other people also notice it less, because it is just part of MY look now. I believe you can make YOUR look and increase your self-esteem, for sure.

Yes, a tabi video is planned. But I’m not sure to what extend I’ll be able to answer your questions... if there is a shop with kohaze shipping to the US, I’ll let you know!

I'm curious about foreigners wearing the geta (with teeth) in relation to cultural appropriation? Can you provide a response for that? I get once I'm not commercializing the item, but the Japanese culture has a lot of attire that has meaning and I'm no trying to offend.
@BillyMatsunaga

There is no deep meaning in any Geta or kimono, you can wear it and no one will judge you.
@CrudeConduct666

The meaning is to have shoes and not be naked. Knock it off with the bullshit and wear what you want. The only ones offended are teenage white people
@marcusroach271

Yeah I mean that goes with most stuff that it is ok unless you are trying to be offensive. If anything it's a compliment to their culture that you are interested by it.

Mironty hi! As I said in the video: they put so much work into zōri and geta, so that’s what they should cost. I hope you’ll have some money on the side to buy some really nice geta or zōri that are super comfortable and you can enjoy for a very long time ❤️

I'm thinking you probably mean to say western footwear and not "normal" footwear. What is normal for westerners or Europeans is not normal for Japanese after all.
