Shock Surplus

3 ай бұрын

With our Silverado’s tenure ending in the Shock Surplus fleet, we knew we had to squeeze in one more test, and it just so happened to be our favorite thing we have tested so far. Without a doubt, the Bilstein 6112 front struts and 5100 or 5160 rear shock packages are probably the best value in suspension with performance that far exceeds their middling price point and these 2019+ Silverado and Sierras are truly the perfect candidates. Not only are they one of the least expensive ways to get any lift out of your Trail Boss or AT4 model, but they also do a perfect job of eliminating most of the woes that plague the horrendously tuned stock suspension. We are the first to admit any ‪@bilsteinUS‬ will land on the firm side of the spectrum, but these GM trucks truly need a little more support and stability to keep them from wallowing down the road and making their passengers sick. Are they perfect? No, but few shocks out there can handle a wider range of use, especially at their price point, and few things last as long. Daily drivers, weekend trail warriors, and even those of you with massive loads meeting or exceeding factory recommendations, however, you ride, these Bilsteins will be an exceptional improvement to the laughably loose stock dampers.

I got 6112 with 5110 for my 20 GMC AT4, and the ride is so much firmer, no more body roll, order thru shock surplus, great customer service, and everything was package perfectly. Took me about 3 hrs to install, with new upper control arms as well, for 1300, it’s not a bad deal

THIS is the video that convinced me to go with the Bilsteins... While I'd always been a Bilstein fan, I have had other brands, and disappointments as well, edelbrock being a MAJOR disappointment... I have run, and currently run Fox 2.0 on my BDS coilover lifted 2002 GMC 2500HD, but was looking for something for my new 2024 Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss and the factory ranchos just were NOT going to cut it...Bilstein to the rescue, with 6112's up front, and 5100's in the rear, those along with a tire swap, Goodyear Wrangle Duratrac LT-RT completely changed the way the truck drove and rode...it may ride like a truck, but it's not all wishy-washy, and handles like a champ...

You guys helped me with my 2nd gen tacoma, bought 6112's front and 5160's rear with add a leaf, awesome set up, but I had to lower the clip a bit, the pre-load was a bit too much and gave me an extremely rough ride and next to zero downtravel/sag. After lowering it to the 1.2" setting it's perfect. 2" no bueno

I actually agree with this. Got a pair at 2 inches, and it's stiff. I got the second pair for my second tacoma at 1,75, and even that made a difference. Maybe when I have time I'll definitely lower the two inch ones to 1.5 and get a taco lean spacer for a little extra height.

I did keep stock height in the front and put lowering shackles in the rear. Didn't want to lift it but wanted it leveled. BUT the stock fuel tank sucks for towing, 24 gallon tank.... I’ve been researching for quite some time now and have loved your channel. I currently own a 2017 GMC Sierra Z71 4X4 Regular Cab. I recently got into off roading with it , it’s currently leveled on Ranchos but they suck lol. I feel everything on the road and the truck shakes like crazy. I’ve been looking for something comfortable on road, that isn’t super bouncy, but absorbs the small bumps at normal driving speeds. I daily drive my truck so on road comfortability is a must, but I also have begun off roading. Mostly light trails at slow speeds but I wanted to try getting up faster on some trails, sadly my Ranchos suck and it makes the expirience way less fun. What would you recommend ? Been looking at Eibach Stage 2 and Fox 2.0!

These aren't as soft as the Fox, a tad more control. Where these excel over Fox would be in the harder hits, the faster offroad stuff, and overall handling. Fox likely wins on comfort depending who you ask, but these Bilstein win on not needing service like the Fox do.

@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 16 күн бұрын
On pavement both shocks are going to feel nearly identical, the 6112 may provide slightly more support/handling with a lot of extra gear. On the dirt at identical speeds, the 6112 will maintain composure a bit more on those unexpected obstacles. But if you're rarely offroad, i'm guessing its mostly fireroads and easy trails at lower speeds, and in that case, you wont see any real benefit from the 6112. The 5100s will make a big difference from your factory shocks, so i'd go that route. If you find the front end bucking too much from moderate offroad hits, or too sloppy up driveways/highway joints/etc, then the 6112 may be the better choice.

So it sounds like eibachs are still smoother at low speeds? Can we say what low speeds are? Also at these lower speeds I’m assuming the heating isn’t as much an issue either
@OscyJack-
@OscyJack- 3 ай бұрын
The eibachs are almost plush. The bilsteins are decidedly firm but compliant when the situation demands more than an initial firm dampened hit. Eibachs will be stiffer but also more compliant than OEM. Bilstein will be stiffer still with a higher threshold before the compliance really begins. I've run tons of 5100s and this is my first 6112 set. They make my 1500 GM feel like a 3/4 ton at slower speeds. But as soon as you get lively, it's still nimble. It starts to smooth out around 40/50mph and then is pretty glassy from there. The 6112s actually take a few miles to warm up in the winter. You get a few miles of ultra shit before they wake up

the 6112 can take more of a beating offroad than the Eibach coilovers, the Bilstein is just a beefier shock and more damping ability. The eibach will be more comfortable on those rocky trails though at slower speeds, whereas Bilstein needs the speed to feel smoother, if that makes sense. If comfort is your priority and slower going on trails, or comfort for the daily drive, we'd stick with Eibach.
