I served in the Marines from 2002 - 2006. Aside from the physical abuse, this is pretty accurate. DIs are not allowed to physically abuse recruits as pictured in this movie. I never saw any physical abuse like this while in basic training. Will they smoke you on the quarterdeck until you puke or pass out? Hell yeah they will!! However, in terms of a DI physically putting their hands on another recruit to abuse them, it's highly unlikely as that DI would have hell to pay when reporting to their Commanding Officer!!

I recently graduated in 2021. My DIs never hit or choked us but they did use aggression to correct us. Oh and the low crawl. None of the other recruits reported it cause they all hated him anyways

I remember seeing Jarhead in the theaters, and being teenagers we loved the entire movie. But the minute the boot camp scenes started, we started dying and the man and his wife in front of us was a USMC Sgt. on leave. He turned around and looked at us during the “Jodie scene” and just smiled. We ended up shaking hands and talking to him for almost an hour and he was hilarious and definitely a man of honor. When I eventually saw it I was disappointed because it didn't have any action and didn't understand it. As a contractor who worked with Army in Iraq and the Marines in Afghanistan, the marines are a different breed altogether. I did battle damage repair on MRAPs at camp leatherneck. Route clearance teams. The tenacity and raw aggression they had was second to none. They would physically fight out disagreements right in front of everyone as soon as one got the upper hand they would shake hands and it was over. One morning we got a few incoming mortars, which was rare at leatherneck. But a daily thing at most army fobs. We got 8 mortars they hit nothing hurt nobody, but I swear we flattened the mountain that came from. They shot everything they had for 8 hours at this mountain. Hell mark missiles, artillery, and warthogs, even had M1s tanks shooting at it. About the 4th hour of this, I said no wonder they don't hit leatherneck much. Much respect for the marines. As a civilian, it's hard to get accepted by them, but once you gain their respect they have your back like one of their own. True warriors! Not taking away from the army, they are too by the book for me ie Micromanaging

One of the most intimidating moments in the infantry is arriving at your duty station. The Marines standing on the cat walks of the barracks is very real and it was my favorite part of the boot drop as a senior Marine. Branding is very much apart of the culture although much like the film its earned. Every unit has its own culture and process for it but it was very much apart of our way of life. Those who have not been apart of the life style may find it cruel and unnecessary but it is a bonding that transcends convention. You may have earned the title of Marine but you have not earned the right to be a grunt until you have put in the work of one. This is our life, this is our creed and those who lost their lives to it we give the upmost respect and admiration for it....Oooray gents.

The book ‘Jarhead’ is really good. It goes into more depth about his family/upbringing and what happened to those he served with after the war. Two parts that were shoehorned into the movie with very little effort imo. If I remember correctly he is very anti military now after growing up around it, loving it and being determined to join. Even trying to get his parents to sign off in him joining early (which they wouldn’t). It’s a good movie but it’s a much better book.

That response (and the confrontational gaze he gives) is only there for the sake of the film as to convey & impress mindsets to the viewers. Not saying such behavior never occurred in reality, only that it was super rare because the penalty would be immediate and furious ..that the D.I. would beat your as into the dirt was just for starters; you'd then likely end up in Moto and the C.C.P. if you continued to buck. I'm talking about once you've been placed in your platoon and training has begun. Usually there's about 3-5 days of "receiving" upon arrival where things aren't expected of you ..as much. During that brief time the repercussions are less severe simply because you aren't being handled by YOUR drill instructors. But even then you're on your best behavior and trying to stay off the radar. It's all planned and a psychological strategy to have you walking on egg shells BEFORE the storm even arrives! That said, despite the flaws, this video had me pumped and laughing harder than I have in months! Semper Fi!

I went to USCG boot camp in 1972....supposedly the second toughest boot camp after the Corp. The CC's were recently prohibited from striking a recruit, but I saw many grabbed by the collar and jacked up against a bulkhead. Swim survival training and relentless PT were the toughest part. Had to think clearly under simulated high pressure situations and had to be very proficient with a .45 as well.

I come back to this scene from time to time... I freaking loved this movie. I remember so many people trashing it because it had no action. LIKE YOU MISSED THE POINT! These guys train like hell and to go on tour and sometimes that was just it...sitting around 365 days in the blistering desert ready to use your training...and it never came for some. Just went around patrolling and not being in endless combat. And they would return with the same PTSD that others vets who were in the trenches did. This movie captured that war is different for everyone...and at the same time... its the same for everyone.

@nekrataali

It really captures how the worst part of combat is the waiting. You're constantly on edge, listening and looking for anything dangerous. There were similar sentiments from guys that were in Easy Company on the days before jumping into Normandy on D-Day. Once the shots started firing, a lot of your training and instincts kick in. But the waiting and anxiety that comes from it fucks a lot of people up.

@@nekrataali I can imagine (but not at the same time because I wasn’t in the military) it being brutal the waiting. The anxiety of something that might never come.
