Hey y'all, I have half a mind to fix up a mess of fried green tomatoes 'fore I get three sheets to the wind over there yonder! Or something. Fuel your Southern side with this week's deep-fried treat, featured prominently in the film of the same name.

They actually are not southern. More northern states had to use tomatoes not ripe red yet due to onset of cold weather. They appear in north midwest cook books. The Whistle Stop had them but before the book/movie they were nowhere down here. I know many old folks that think its absolute nuts to go gaga over a green tomato. Now, look up fried RED tomatoes. Had at a wedding once. 😎

Eric Pope Yeah, what im saying is they are a manufactured southern classic. I challenged my dad when he told me the same history, but then I looked it up. Its true. They were not a craze down here before that book.

I am born and bred from Minnesota, and so is my Grandma. She made fried green tomatoes for me back in about 2005, in her apartment, in Minnesota, and I absolutely loved them. I haven't had them since. She died in 2012. I would love to try them again - I wish it was more of a thing you see on restaurant menus so I could try them again without having to make them myself. Most supermarkets around here don't even sell green tomatoes.

Whistle stop cafe recipe is a batter. I used to just dip them in a mix of egg and milk and then a mix of flour, meal, salt, and pepper, but first dip them in flour. They're so simple to make. I just took 2 green tomatoes off of the vine and fried them.

So I just stumbled across this episode and burst into tears. One of my earliest memories with my grandma was actually taking a phone call from my aunt who was saying that the movie was getting ready to start on a certain channel, and then giving the message to my grandma, super confused, bc I had no idea it was a movie! (I was, like, 8 lol). My grandma's still alive, but has pretty advanced dementia, so she doesn't remember. Thank you for doing this recipe! 💙

See, the problem with the 'chimurrito' (based on the way Ron pronounces it, I'm assuming that's the correct portmanteau) is that it's completely redundant. A chimichanga is already basically just a burrito that has been deep fried. Personally, I believe that whoever wrote that line didn't actually think about what (s)he was creating, because (s)he never thought anybody would actually care to make one.

I'd wondered about that as well, my best guess is that it's a small chimichanga wrapped in a tortilla, possibly with the hot ingredients being fried with the chimichanga and the veggies and shredded cheese in the tortilla layer?
