Binoculars are often overlooked by new astronomers because when they think about astronomy, they automatically think about telescopes.
In reality, binoculars have an important place in stargazing, and many astronomers always bring them along. In fact, I always bring my pair along with me and use it interchangeably during a night out in the field.
In this video, I highlight the 5 advantages of binoculars over telescopes:
1. Small & Lightweight
2. Easy to Transport
3. You Might Have One
4. Less Expensive
5. Easier to Find Objects
If you have anything else you'd like to add, please add them to the comments section below. Clear skies and thanks for watching!

Binoculars are really good for looking at the night sky! With my dad's 10x50 binoculars, I was able to see the Orion Nebula, the Pleiades star cluster and the Beehive star cluster. So they're excellent to use in amateur astronomy.

I recently started star gazing by buying a 15x70 binocs. I really enjoy finding the constellations and then zooming in on particular sections of the night sky. And learning my way around the sky. Since I want to learn the night sky, I can't imagine starting with a telescope without using binoculars first. I would think that the telescope would just be too frustrating. And my brother let me borrow his cheap telescope and it did confirm that opinion. Yes I saw Jupiter closer but taking in all sky takes time and patience. Something a binocular will help in the process.

Here's more: 6) Easy to stay at low magnification and include large patch of sky in one view. Can show entire Pleiades. 7) No need to squint either eye. Both eyes can comfortably stay open. 8) Images are right-side-up 9) Can watch at comfortable position (for hours) using a lawn chair and a tripod with balance stand
@dedskin1
@dedskin1 5 жыл бұрын
true let me add more 10) better image quality and resolution compared to a cheap scope 11) more beautiful views its called Rich Field , with or without a scope everyone needs a bit of Rich field And cons you need to hold them , its about 2 pounds or a kilo , And price is not that low , i mean i looked at 300$ binos Yukon Point , and build quality is catastrophe, cheap plastic , cheap chinese glass , good glass but cheap . Another example is 15x70 Celestron , its just classic lens remade to fit in to binoculars ,due to this only middle portion of the view is usable, and its 4mm exit pupil as it is , with half wasted , ends up using 2mm out of 7mm that your eye can do , with no fix for this in sight other then using more expensive glass There are problems , but what can you do it is what it is , not perfect .
@mikhailkolobanov490
@mikhailkolobanov490 4 жыл бұрын
Good points, but it is worthy of notice that you shouldn’t squint your unused eye (if possible) in a telescope either, as it would slightly impair night vision in your used eye, which makes an impact on DSOs. Not that big of a deal, but more comfortable and necessary for perfecting viewing technique.

I have a newtonian reflector on an EQ5 mount, but I only use it on stargazing meetings with the local astronomy group about once a month. I also have a pair of binoculars which I can use at any moment, but sometimes they don't give enough detail. So I ended up buying a cheap refractor tube (400mm focal length, 80mm aperture), and I use it on my standard camera tripod. So now I have something that gives more detail than a pair of binoculars, and is almost as portable (tube+tripod is about 3Kg). I think that any astronomer should have these 3 items: large telescope for meetings and scheduled long observation nights, a small portable telescope when you want something easy to set up in one minute, and a pair of binoculars if you have to go on a trip.

I once had a range of telescopes including a 12"dobsonian,they soon went as the weight of a 12"dobsonian makes it a chore to set up.But i kept my binoculars which are a 15×70 helios and a 25×100 helios.I now always use the 15×70 which are tripod mounted,because the views through these compared to the larger ones are far sharper and clearer.Sweeping starfields with these bino's especially the 15×70's is very satisfying.Iv'e ordered a pair of secondhand 10×90×60mm zoom bino's very cheaply on ebay just to give them a try.I also use a 20×60×80mm spotting scope which also gives extremely nice views,and was also very cheap brand new for less than £40 free p&p off ebay.Astronomy is now the very relaxing past time that it should be.

Exactly right! I messed up and bought the cheap telescope first and for just the reasons you mentioned, the young adult I purchased it for was turned off. Cheap optics and cheap mount. I wound up chucking it. I've since purchased a 10x50 pair of Carson 3D's and they are way more used by all. These binoculars can be used for number of purposes. However, an astronomy pair might be better to see the rings of Saturn or the moons of Jupiter. This pair doesn't quite capture those. My next step will be a higher quality telescope ($750-$1500). I've seen some of your other videos, don't think I really want a goto feature, but definitely want an equatorial mount.

I am a new subscriber but not new to astronomy having first become interested way back in 1986. I have owned a number of telescopes, mostly refractors but I have also owned binoculars from 10x30 ( Canon IS) to a magnificent pair of Oberwerk 20x80 that gave some awesome views of the Moon. Now, I am considering a pair of 12x50s for their 4mm (roughly) exit pupil, which is more conducive to me older eyes. Nikon has one of this size in their Aculon series and I was wondering what you thought of it. Thanks for your feedback.

For hand-held astronomy, 7x35 and 8x40 are great sizes. The 7x50 and 10x50 binos are fantastic for seeing fainter objects, but they are heavier and may not be ideal for long hand-held sessions, and perform better when attached to a tripod. Anything above 10x50 with binoculars for astronomy, and a tripod is a must at all times.

The 7X35s and best 8X42 has also very wide field of view, ideal for sweeping fields of stars. Still, I use mostly 7X50s and 10X50s. The cheaper and lighter Nikon and Steiners, and the expensive Fujinons.

@@ricardosoto5770 these days my go to binos are the Vortex Viper 10x50. They are fairly lightweight despite their larger magnification. Not the cheapest, but not extremely expensive either, and they offer very crisp views of both terrestrial and astronomical targets.

@@salty-as-heck9915 Actually the Vortex Vipers 10X50s, Atlon Midas 10X50 and the Meoptras 10x50s are in my interest list for a both birding and astro binocular. They are not as expensive as Zeiss or Swaros, but they seem decent for the price for both jobs. I still plan to get a Fuji FMT SX for astro, since they are regarded as best in this class by many people (I got the 7X50s and yes, they are that great). But as a traveling/birding/astronomy set, the Vipers sounds good. They are on my interest list, and maybe they will move to my wish list. Still some cheaper Nikon 7X35 can be usefull since they have a really wide angle, something is not longer common in current binoculars.

Another thing I discovered about binoculars concerning stargazing both eye see slightly different for example I could see some stars with my right eye in my case but see more stars in my left eye so depending on one's vision you could be missing some stars using a telescope if you were to use the wrong eye. I bought the Nikon Extreme 10x50 because of the wide field of view what some people don't realize is even if you use a tripod with a 12x50 for instance you can still get a shaky image.

Its called a Tasco Eye 7x.I don't know if it's a lower end or middle range binoculars and I can't even remember where it came from but it looks nice and it's very clear and even though I'm not into bird watching,photography or those kind of things it's still fun to see things from far away.I can even see the shadows of the moons craters when it's part lit up.So 7x is pretty good already.

mate just put the lens cap over the right lens look at something about 60 . 70 yards away , and use the wheel thats in between the binos , when you have a clear image stop turning the wheel , take the lens cap off , and put one over the left lense , this time move the dioptic wheel that is normally on the back eye piece of the right part of the binos , turn this one till u see clear , and stop remove the lense cap and look through both at the same time , they should now be perfect and wont need anymore ajusting , unless somebody uses them and ajusts then too suit their eyes , then all u will have too do is repeat the same steps it takes about one min too do this , i know this is late but here u go mate simple

Of course, the binoculars allow both retinas to be used at once...possibly a good feature.

I find binocular observing tedious and unrewarding because of shoulder and arm strain after only a minute or so! And the image NEVER stops gittering around making the experience frustrating. Perhaps a tripod would help, but that is an adventure for most newbies at best! 1

what power should you get?
@BwantleyBoo
@BwantleyBoo 8 жыл бұрын
Well, there's two numbers on binoculars to look for. They look like this. 7x50. The first number is how much POWER or MAGNIFICATION you're getting. The second number is the diameter of the optical lens. So the bigger that number is, the more light is coming in. Think about your pupils getting way bigger at night to adjust so you can see better in the dark. The bigger the better. In Astronomy, this number is essential since you're looking at a dark sky. If you go too large on the magnification (10 power or 15 power is really pushing it) then it will be difficult to keep a nice steady view, since there's so much shake from your hands. Have you ever tried to zoom in with a camera and keep it still? Same concept. I would go with somewhere around 7. That's a good sweet spot. I hope that helps!

+Brantley May What are your thoughts on a Orion 20x80?
@BwantleyBoo
@BwantleyBoo 8 жыл бұрын
Rossoneri King For astronomical viewing? They sound great, as long as you have a stand for them. 20x power is very high power for binoculars. You won't be able to hold them steady when looking into the sky. Also, it depends on what you're trying to look at. If you want to see constellations, you should get LOW power with high diameter (5x80).You can see more of the sky. if you are trying to see up close, or planets like jupiter, then yeah the 20x80 are great, just make sure you get a stand!

Try any pair you can get your hands on even a cheap pair. Using two eyes really up the experience. Binoculars that are mounted on a tripod are amazing.

For 80 euros, if you are using them for stargazing, just find anything that has multicoated lens, with the most magnification and the biggest objective lens' you can get. For that price point, nothing is going to be really high quality, but look at the Celestron Skymaster 15X70.

Check out the 10 x50 Olympus. I did extensive research before I bought mine - all the reviews were really positive and if you go on Amazon right now it's reduced from £105 - £60 - that's the UK . The image is really crisp - almost 3D - and I can pick out details on the hills ten miles away.

If you're still looking, check your local thrift/second hand stores. People tend to donate things like binoculars and you could find a good pair for 20euros.
