Making transgenic organisms was not an area of medical ethics that I had considered before so I am glad that I came across this video. When the video first started, I was wondering how this would be relevant or of any ethical concern but now my perspective has changed. Transgenic organisms, particularly plants seem to be all pros and no cons if you glance at them from a surface level. For example, the speaker mentions golden rice which is high in the precursor for vitamin A. Planting this in areas of the world that suffer from vitamin A deficiency could greatly help that problem. So where is the downside? The speaker then mentions that modified organisms are known to produce toxins. These toxins are usually untraced, and we haven’t been able to prove that they are not harmful. The long terms effects are also unknown. While the transgenic golden rice seems to embody the ethical principle of beneficence or doing good, it may in actuality be violating the principle of non-maleficence which means to do no harm. Are the short-term benefits of using golden rice to help with vitamin A deficiencies worth the potential long-term risk of harm of an unmeasured magnitude? When it comes to transgenic animals what if the modified genes are passed on? Will we eventually be at risk of losing the model animal all together? The speaker brings up another great point of our need for a model organism when testing for things such as new medications. That inability to test for new medications would undoubtedly go against our ethical obligation of non-maleficence. After watching this video, I am going to research this topic more to see what is being done about these ethical concerns. Are we truly just modifying organisms left and right for short term benefits with no concern for the long-term consequences?
