You can go from near perfect astartes created from geneseed from the Great Crusade to a bag of meat and hormones strapped to a black carapace whose brain is barely developed. It would be trutly interesting to see this explored by novels whose tales are not grand, they simply speak about survival in the Eye.

When delving deep enough you will find that a Legion, wether of old or in the 41st (42nd? time has stopped being relevant since the rift afteral...) is ten times at minimum larger then a codex compliant Astartes chapter of the modern day, the Death Guard, Word-Bearers and Black Legion are the three most cohesive organizations left, each in a different way. warbands are the more mobile and loose-defined organizations of the traitors that can range from small forces to a company (1 tenth of a old fashioned legion) 14th Legion followed Mortarion to the eye after the siege of Terra and did so in a manner that they crippled anything standing in their way ("reaving as they went."), their retreat was organized enough that Nurgle Blessed the Primarch for his efforts in bringing the legion as a whole to his service, granting him the plague-planet as a renewed home and homage to Barbarus. those who do not follow Mortarion either joined with Typhus, the Black Legion or struck out for their own such as the Rotworm-Brotherhood. but when either the Warmaster or the Death-Lord calls, they answer. if they know what's good for them... Black Legion is unique in that astartes from all origins can have a place within it, (corrupted, possessed, disillusioned, disenfranchised, forsworn or abandoned etc) needing to forswear their former oaths in favor to Abaddon, to pledge themselves to him, and be reborn in black and gold. their organization is much like the Luna Wolves and Sons Of Horus of old, ad-hoc and rather flexible, where merit and reputation make or break the glory-seekers, undivided is their creed but all the gods have a following within the black legion in smaller scale, these are warbands such as the Hounds Of Abaddon for Khorne, the Sons Of The Cyclops for Tzeentch, Bringers Of Decay For Nurgle, and Children Of Torment for Slaanesh, then there's the odd-ones out such as the Tormented who are all possessed willing or otherwise. and the Oath-Broken who are the failures and broken ones, the champions of yesteryear and last-chancers amongst the legion. the Black Legion is the fastest growing and the largest out of the three i mentioned so far. Then there's the Word-Bearers, they are organized but in a more loose sense, ever since Lorgar distanced himself in meditation for a long time the legion was given to to the rule of a dark council, overseen by the most prominent Dark Apostles and usually divided by those who support either Erebus or Kor-Phaeron, each trying to outwit or out-play the other for total say over the 17th as a whole, it is their faith in Chaos itself that has kept them together but not much else then their goals keeping them from eachother's throats. their war of faith keeps them united as much as their ilk can be in the first place. but their betrayals serve a purpose however, it fuels Chaos more directly then any united war of brotherhood could. the cunning thrive, the strong rise, and the weak and witless are sacrifced to the gods. they operate the most in warband formations then as a legion entire. Red-Corsairs often operate alongside the Black Legion for big campaigns of plunder and war or go about their own bussiness with smaller-scale attacks on shipping lanes and far-off resources the Imperium is ill suited to defend or respond to in time. they are still a chapter but free from the rules they followed before. The others (EC, IW, NL, WE, TS, AL) are more fragmented or sporadic and when momentarily united quite dangerous. but not what they used to be, the Emperor's Children are fully given to their kinks whims and desires, despise competition or similar devotees to Slaanesh such as the Children Of Torment who they consider traitors to Fulgrim and pets of Abaddon. and they are known as a shattered Legion, and have been rumored to be gathering up again on Fulgrim's orders, but right now, its only hearsay, he's on a party-train wrecking planets and their populace wherever they go. The Iron Warriors have a complex structure of many Grand Companies, (back in the day the name they used for their Chapter level organizations of the Legion, a 1000 men.) who are varying warbands in strength and size, if several unite they become a Grand Battallion (Company formation of ten chapters.) but they are prone to rivalries and infighting on Medrengard, Perturabo is their absolute authority and master, but he is not heard of or seen for a long time now, since the rift openend he has been coordinating large blockades and attacks on the Imperium by working with the Dark Mechanicum and sending out all sorts of terrible creations that spawned from their shared ingenuity. but also, that's hearsay. The Night Lord's are reduced to operating mostly as warbands, and do not operate as a legion anymore, their favored way of war allows them to hit and run and come and go as they please, they worship none, and they trust none, competing and hardly even trusting those among themselves... they're found operating on their own terms or alongside the Black Legion should the spoils and rewards be good enough but back out again if a fight doesn't go in their favour. worlds and armies can be brought down to their knees in gibbering fear, but they lack the numbers, will and focus to keep anything they claim for long. they're predators with a long memory, but their Legion days are done. World Eater's, are the second shattered legion due to Kharn The Betrayer at the battle of Skalathrax, who now leads the greatest and largest warbands left of the Legion's olden days who made sure to purge any former leaders left in its old command structure, he is the center and heart of their rage and the only one strong enough to lead the most mindless butchers on their Slaughter-Crusade. and any new recruits to the Blood God's Creed. at most they can rally to a company's size of cohesion, but if without much of a fight infront of them will dissolve again into killing eachother. Angron could probably muster far bigger and more devastating numbers, but he's been held-back several times from materializing fully on Armageddon. Magnus and the Thousand Sons are reunited now with Ahriman and have begun enacting their schemes and plots on both the Wolves and The Imperium, but they've ever been the smallest Legion, and that hasn't changed, divided into nine cults with many thrall-bands of cultists and tzeentchian monsters to serve them. but with the psychic awakening they've stood to gain from the influx of psykers that rally to their siren-song, either as fuel or more useful agents. And the Alpha Legion, is as ever unknowable, they are everywhere, and nowhere, they are organized, and yet they are fractured and sown across the Imperium and the ranks of chaos itself. they are where they're needed and not wanted, they are not there where wanted and do not exist at all. unless you know where to look and they've decided to let you know anything at all. they work throughout the super-structure of all hierarchies, unknown, unseen, unrecorded, in fact there's no such thing as an Alpha Legion, why do you ask? get back to work!
