Footage from the Rio Sucuri - a karst stream habitat in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

Footage shows the habitat of the clear water karst stream of the Rio Sucuri, in the Bodoquena highlands of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The first few km of the river are clear, having emerged from its source spring nearby and has not yet had time to become turbid from detritus and sediment. The clear waters permit plenty of sunlight penetration which in turn leads to dense aquatic vegetation.

Bacopa australis
Chara rusbyana
Echinodorus cordifolius
Echinodorus grandiflorus
Echinodorus macrophyllus
Gomphrena elegans
Helanthium bolivianum (used to be known as Echinodorus bolivianus)
Hydrocotyle verticillata (described in literature concerning this river as H. leucocephala but I'm sure that it's H. verticillata)
Ludwigia peruviana
Myriophyllum aquaticum
Nymphaea jamesoniana
Nymphaea gardneriana Planch
Potamogeton illinoensis
Polygonum acuminatum
Polygonum hydropiperoides
Pontederia parviflora

What a footage! The endless waves of Myriophyllum and its color with combination of crystal clear blue water is just amazing. And that is only a part of this video. This is a real inspiration. It has to be wonderful feeling to immerse into that world. Thank you for sharing it with us.

fascinating red fish. thanks for sharing. I've snorkeled the Caribbean, but the best experience was snorkeling a stream near the Ozarks in Arkansas, USA. This Brazilian habit is so much nicer.

To be fair, most of the fish we have now have been bred in captivity over multiple generations, while they still retain their natural instincts, they likely won't care about where they live and more about how'd they live.

Absolutely stunning. I love that you added all the flora and fauna in the description. I'm sure a bit of googling would give the water parameters but that would have been a nice inclusion giving the wonderful work you have already done. I find the music a perfect make to the strong but relaxing nature of this river.

Thanks Liam! The only issue is that I didn't have kit to measure parameters there and the one I can request from my university out there costs about 20000 USD...so they don't let me borrow it very often! However, in another river I monitored nearby, the water is about ph 7.3, temp about 25/26C.

@@biotopia5319 haha can't imagine why they don't let you borrow it more 😅 Ah those are helpful. Harder water than expected and I wonder if this could be a contributing factor for the Hyphessobrycon Eques looking as red as they are in this system as well as the lower water temperature.

@@biotopia5319 вы хорошо по-русски печатаете. Я когда по-английски делаю комментарии, то тоже использую переводчик в интернете. Он нормально переводит русские предложения на английский и наоборот. Я проконсультировалась с Кристель Кассельманн, экспертом по водным растениям, и она объяснила, что это Echinodorus macrophyllus, потому что они мужские. Первоначально растение было описано как Alisma macrophyllum, потому что пол Alisma нейтрум. Но когда вы перемещаете вид в другой род, вы должны изменить окончание имени «um» на «us». Она сказала, что то же самое и с Echinodorus floribundus, который сначала был описан как Alisma floribundum, или Echinodorus grandiflorus, который впервые был описан как Alisma grandiflorum. Из-за первоначального описания 'Alisma' есть путаница с текущими названиями, но это E. macrophyllus :)

Amazing Tai ! Damn i wish this biotope would have some apistograma / Dicrossus or any other small chichild , it would make a perfect biotope aquarium material then . Unless you got an idea for a nice ''center piece'' fish from this biotope Tai ?

Hey! Well, the only cichlids I've seen there are Cichlasoma dimerus. But if you had a group of Characidium fasciatum (as stand-ins for C. aff. 'zebra'), they would be a nice central feature and they are wonderful characterful fish. You could also have a group of Corydoras aeneus which are also found here. :)

Sometime, often, I think places like this shouldn't be shared and disclosed. the higher percentage of the population doesn't understand how delicate the system is and how even your presence there coming from an urban environment has an effect on it.

you're right, in this case though, the location is an eco-tourist destination, and they only permit 100 visitors per day, in small staggered groups, who must follow a guide closely. For me, I am able to explore more as a scientist, but most visitors are more carefully monitored :)

Its serpae tetra. They are in the aquarium hobby but man those colors are incredible.

Love this! I've never heard of a karst habitat in South America? Does this mean that the water here is harder than you'd typically associate with Amazonian fish? I don't suppose you know any numbers on hardness and ph in these habitats?

Hey! I don't have hardness but ph is about 7.3, although it's a karst stream, there is so much organic material entering from the forest that it stays quite soft.

Hi, those are Moenkhausia bonita, the 'highland' version. Specimens from the lowlands are not so colourful. veo que estan tirando burbujas de a miles supongo son burbujas de oxigeno, dé donde sacan el dióxido de carbono en estado natural? veo que la fotosintesis es increible y dudo mucho que las heces de los peces sean la fuente de dioxido, me llamo poderosamente la atencion es como un acuario plantado gigante.

Hola Cesar, es que en un ambiente tan grande como un lago o rio, el area de superificie es muy grande, y asi facilita un grande intercabio de Co2. Combinado con el sol tropical fuerte y agua transparente, nosotros vean las plantas "pearling" con frequencia. :)

Salminus brasiliensis, known as "dourado". Large predatory fish. I used to catch them on a chunk of beef heart.

There are Cichlasoma dimerus and some Aequidens species here, but they tend to be in the margins. The Pike cichlids are the most common ones.
