Aimee Blondel • I think Tom having been in Iraq is why he was able to last a bit longer after facing them. He has been trained to remain calm under pressure and has faced things much darker than the average person. In the end, though, he is still good. I know it would have been impossible to do, but I was hoping for a way for them to show the little boy and his father that Tom talked about. Perhaps since they were both good and went up against things even difficult for Tom, they might have been able to “beat” the creatures. I’m going to have to see if that is mentioned in the book...

Bird Box was still scary as hell even without the deleted scenes. I know people say that they didn't trust Gary when he showed up. I didn't trust Olympia, because I knew she was going to do something stupid like letting an outsider in and getting nearly everyone killed, which is exactly what she did.
@FlicksAndTheCity
@FlicksAndTheCity 5 жыл бұрын
It certainly was! I was definitely one of those who thought Gary was up to something as soon as he arrived though, like you, I also thought Olympia was going to end up doing something along the lines of what she actually did too! Still, enjoyed the movie all the same! :-)

@@FlicksAndTheCity Bird Box was what The Happening should have been. Killer pollen? Oh boy. The scene with Gary that really chilled me was how his voice sounded when he sat on the bed and demanded that Malorie hand over the babies to him. Quiet but totally unhinged. You knew if he didn't get his way he was going to use extreme violence. For a wild moment at the school I thought Rick was Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln - Walking Dead). Yeah, I know, the guy on the radio didn't sound like him but that was where my mind went for all of five seconds.
@FlicksAndTheCity
@FlicksAndTheCity 5 жыл бұрын
Lol, I wonder if M. Night Shyamalan has seen this film yet?! As for Gary, Tom Hollander is such a fantastic actor. That's spot-on what you said about how he played that scene - skin-crawlingly creepy! That would have been wild if it had turned out to be Andrew Lincoln at the end - they certainly had a lot of class actors in this film! :-)

I very liked that they didn't showed the creatures in the film. It just makes the audience feel like they are in the same position:"we haven't seen them and because of that we are still alive". It just adds to a very eerie feeling. I think the scene with the drawings of the creatures was very effective as well.

Unfortunately people don't seem to be very imaginative. They want to see a monster regardless of whether this would spoil the film. What could they possibly show that's worse than our imaginations?
@Grattenj
@Grattenj 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed - the fact that it makes your deepest sadness and/or worst fears somehow dominate your mind kindof makes the viewer imagine their own worst fears and how horrible it would be to experience that - there's no way they could have visually represented an actual creature to match up to that level of horror. At least not without crossing into cheesy horror movie territory. But ya, a brilliant tease came from the crazy guy's drawings - you get a hint of what they might look like, but with still plenty of room for imagination.

I mean we get that one vague theory from the grocery store clerk that humanity was judged, but i mean what are the chances that some random guy you are sharing a house with hit the nail on the head as to their motives. Something I wondered after watching the ending of this movie is, “Is this really a happy ending?” They might be safe at the school but the monster is still roaming around outside. And nobody knows how to get rid of it. They only know how to escape from it.. They’re literally trapped. And what about all the other people who couldn’t escape? What about when someone dies? Where are you going to burry them? Or when all the children grow up and have kids of their own? The population would keep growing.. and someone would have to be sacrificed. And the new generation wouldn’t know how the real world looks (or looked) like.. The experiences they could have are so limited..

*small spoilers*: Right at the beginning of the sequel novel "Malorie" a creature gets into the school for the blind causing people to go insane, even blind people, which forces Malorie and the kids to flee after only staying there for two years, making the ending of the first novel even more bitter sweet - though this leads to new adventures and revelations.

I think the scene with Malory confronting the creatures and driving them back by threatening to cut out her eyes would've been great. it's the old "final boss battle", giving a greater sense of closure. Even though the creatures weren't defeated, we would've had that standoff, with malory coming out victorious. I'm glad they cut the bird suicide scene, only because it would've meant we wouldn't have got the scene with Malory choosing which child would look. that was my favourite scene in the whole movie. I think it was a pivotal point where Malory decided that she loved both of the children too much to let either of them look. The acting was so powerful in this scene, it really moved me.

So those immune to the creatures are either people who doesn't fear anything (is that even possible ?) or people that are crazy or insane maybe because they're already insane which makes the concept of going insane invalid to them and end up in suicide or they don't have the right mind to form something that they fear or maybe they see their own nightmares as something different or beautiful than what it really is and just ends up accepting it. Idk just my thoughts but I ain't tryin' to be smart or anything.

stealthassulter, Not really, just because you didn’t like it or it didn’t fill what you wanted it to be before you saw how it ends doesn’t make it stupid? The middle section of the film is where the whole premise is intensified, the only stupid part of the film is the little non contextual situations and happenings in my opinion, for example, Those kids would have never had time or the opportunity to learn to swim how did they swim to shore from the rapids? How did the bird survive the rapid? I would personally blame the director for not leaving it dark and truer to the book.

I scurried back inside and locked the door. When I went bed, I stared in my closet, hoping that I didn't see some darker shadow emerge, and when I heard the wind picked up, I hid underneath my blankets. It would have been scary, true, but I’m glad they left that scene out because it would have been very confusing for the viewers. It wouldn’t make any sense then why the birds in the box were clearly unaffected by the creatures because the birds in the film have represented a warning signal for when the creature is near. It also would have been confusing at the end because there were all the birds in the sanctuary and they wouldn’t have really been safe. I guess that could make a good scary ending but I think it would have left too many loop holes.

Braden Goodman not really. The book left a little bit of room for wondering if some other characters survived and made it to the school before Mallory got there, like perhaps she was so far behind due to having to raise the kids first. In the book she raised the kids completely alone, but we believed Tom may be where Mallory was headed up until the action packed chapter where Gary fucks it all up. Remember the speakers with Toms voice? We didn’t know it was a recording

The only thing I can think of is the school is destroyed and so Malorie and the kids and a couple other characters have to look for a new place. The best option is for the sequel to have brand new characters. I would hope Malorie would cameo during the 2nd movie. Maybe the sequel could be about the cop and white guy because I would like to know what happened to them.

The whole last fifteen minutes felt bland and bad. How did the kids learn to suddenly swim? You know Mallory didn't take the time to teach them how to swim blindfolded lol. Why were they running so fiercely? The creatures couldn't hurt them if they stayed blindfolded. That entire last sequence had zero tension because of that. Ohhh the creature could whisper ominously? That's so scary... not really. They could have done so much differently and went the most boring safest route.

If Bird Box was a monster movie, these deleted scenes would've been great additions; but it isn't. Not primarily. It's about love. The deleted scenes would've taken away so much from character growth and the director's vision. However, if it were to focus more on the monsters, I think we as the audience should've experienced an episode of the monsters' control. See what a person sees from under the monsters' influence.

Great point! :-) Yes, it's about a lot more than just the creatures. When some people see the creatures, they don't commit suicide but instead see something beautiful. After an encounter with the creatures, Malorie finds a place where no one can see them, where everyone is protected and her kids can be kids. What she sees is beautiful. I think Malorie does see the creatures and what we see is her warped reality. She actually killed the children and is wandering the woods mumbling about how beautiful it is.

I'm fine with never seeing the monsters. The revealed photos of what they ended up making showed that they looked more weird than scary. And yeah, it's arguably more terrifying to leave it up to the imagination. However, I do wish we got to find out more about the monsters. We know so little all the way throughout that there's just not much to work with. I don't need a full explanation. I do want some explanation though. I'm not sure how they could have worked such an explanation into the film, as I'm not sure how anyone could know anything definitive about them. But still, I would have liked to know more about them. Are they spirits? Are they aliens? How do they operate? How do they survive? Do they need to eat? Can they be killed? Can they be defeated? Or is humanity just forever staving off extinction?

The movie is already dark and ppl are having some serious reactions to seeing the monster. So the almost poking out of eyes would have fit better perfectly. Seems like there should be some sort way to defeat the creature other than just blinding yourself. Seems Sandra had some sort of link to the monster because she was always dreaming about them. Perhaps the monsters could sense her strength because who would have guessed threatening to stab out your eye (the only control the demons actually have) would get such an intrusive creature to back off.

Right after her birth Gary stared at her fascinated and said "so beautiful", but when he barely glanced an eye at Malorie's baby son, he said "wow. hum". Which could've given her some power to see the monsters and be friends with them, or just not see them at all... I don't know, it opened some possibilities to me :)
