Spent some good times with Birdie. Drinking beer, golfing, shagging balls for him. Was fortunate to ride the bus and travel with those guys in 85 86. Games on the road and at home . Practices were the best! Even went to French Lick and stayed at the compound. Larry's mom made us breakfast one morning and it was just all so special. I'll never forget those golden days. All made possible by my good friend Bill Walton or as the Chief called him, WILLIAM!!

Building on what CandyMan said, Bird is an interesting dude. When he got to Boston, the big city, he had no problem with letting people think he was dumb. He genuinely didn't care. He was shy and didn't speak and reporters genuinely thought he was a dumb hick. There's a great Peter Vescey quote where he asks Bird, how come you never go over the record with me. Everybody goes off the record and he says I don't care, I never read what you write. Magic seems very, very much like he cares what people think of him like most of us do. Bird seems genuinely unconcerned.

Good comments. The scary thing about Bird's dead-eye shooting is Larry said after that serious finger injury playing softball with his brother, Larry said he never had the same feel for the ball after the injury! And yet he still is one of the 2-3 greatest CLUTCH shooters in NBA history.

Quite the contrary to what we have now. Jackie rolled with Bird's great humor pretty well. She needed to maintain a little statue-dedication dignity, but she knew to let it roll.

I wont say I admire Bird , because I too understood how some people can take avoiding an innocent hug as being 'rude'. Some of us our not as dialed in to our emotional feelings as others. And if people knew anything about Larry and how his upbringing was difficult ... they shouldnt judge so quickly . Granted ...Magic was a kid and didnt realiize Bird meant nothing wrong in avoiding a hug...as he would learn how The Old School Ways of being raised was much more priceless then of his own upbringing. And Larry also has dealt with what 90 percent of us havent. . Losing his father and the circumstances of the way he was lost. Until you walk into someone shoes people shouldnt judge so quickly. All this said It was good seeing Bird being more annimated and in a comical type mood then I have never saw him like ever B4. I was raised in Laker country to where Purple and Gold were constantly around me . And there was me .. In my Green and White Celtics jacket .. My Larry bird jersey. my converse AllStar Birds shoe. My mom and grandparents moved to Southern Cali after she graduated high school. in Watertown Massachusettes .. which is roughly 12 miles west of Boston . So being that I spent a good majority of my childhood with at my grandparents ... and all The Boston sports teams was a written law passed down from my grandfather .. unto me. And luckily , the only sports teams that got TV time back in those days .. were teams that were above average. Celtics games were televised and the rest is history It was like being raised in a Hornets nest . Cause 99 percent of my fellow classmates were all about the all about The Lakers . So it made for great trash talk during the finals. And not just Birds play , but ALL OF THE BEST STARTING FIVE EVER ASSEMBLEDs play is what gave me many off 'one ups' after the Lakers and Celtics would play head to head . Which was twice during the regular season and then in the playoffs. . Much Love for Larry and although he is extrremely humble.. , it was awesome having him to look up to and put the question to rest ... if White people can play Basketball. . I tip my hat to you Larry and congrats on your career. Sorry about the C's sweeping the Pacers this year, Next year , Indiana will be a force in the playoffs that many wont wanna play .
