Thank you for your last answer! I am in Asia, I hope my studies can be as professional as yours in the future! ! I often watch videos of your work online, I benefit a lot, and thank you for sharing~ Another question to ask you, animal skins such as cows, sheep, bears, etc., when tanning and pickling, the gloss of the fur will fade. Is there any way to keep the beautiful gloss and fluffy fur~ Why the animal fur you display online is always so shiny~ Thank you
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy Жыл бұрын
Wish you all the best of luck wherever you are in Asia. Your tanned hide is not losing the shine on the fur, in fact the shine is being covered with the residue of the chemical.. you need to tumble the tanned hide in a tumbler with saw dust... sometimes it might take an hour or two of tumbling in saw dust. its the saw dust that will cleans and shines up the hair again.

Hi again! I was following everything with no issues until you said to proceed with mounting. I watched you preservation video and you stated that we can proceed to mounting or freeze it. What a Are these the correct steps? 1. Skinning 2. Wire wheel 3. Degreasing 4. Preservation 5. Mount Thank you very much
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Julia … yes you got them right. When you have the bird all done at stage 4… if you have the time to proceed with the mounting you can start drying the skin with towel and start wiring it and proceed till it’s finished. Or you can take the extra moisture out and bag and freeze till you have time.

Do you have to do some tanning process to the bird skin also before you put it on the form ?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 4 жыл бұрын
Boone Collector some people like to use borax, others like to soak it in borax, salt and alum solution. Both works fine.

Would you let me know what is the "Heavy Dawn Solution"? Thanks
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy Жыл бұрын
Dawn is the brand of the dish detergent. And when I said heavy I basically meant concentrated .. like mixing a lot of it in the water to do it’s work as a degreaser.

Do you only use COLD water? I am curious about why not using warm water? I know blood will fixate on the feathers in warm water, but can you get all the fat off with only cold water?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
I have always used cold water but I’m sure warm water will work too and has its own steps. Since I leave the skin in heavy soap solution for long , it breaks down all grease cells everywhere and I haven’t had any issues yet. But a few taxidermy friends of mine use warm water and they like it. By the way not having a hot water tank in my shop is another reason too 😄

Is there any heat in your washer when you spin it to dry, like a tumble dryer? Or can you spin a washing machine without having any water go in?........shows you how much I use our washing machine 🤣
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel. I just use the spin function of the machine, my machine is an old one that is just hooked up to the drain. I spin the skins to push all the water out. It won’t dry it.

I assume you have an old washing machine for this, I think the wife would divorce me if I through this in our house washing machine, or would it be ok in there, it should be pretty clean after all the baths. Anything special to do before freezing? cotton in head, wrap feet etc?
@ArtofTaxidermy

Yes I do have a used washer in the shop for this only. Nothing needed for freezing after the bath. Just spin and bag it even better vacuum pack if mounting is not happening in less than a month.

Thanks for the video I have a question for you I swam the skin of the fox, removed its oils Which chemical should I use to prevent the fox skin from rotting and softening? What chemical do you recommend to soften the skin? Fiebing's Pure Neatsfoot Oil 32 oz | Leather Softener | This material comes with the applicator; not sold in my country
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 4 жыл бұрын
You need to have the skin sent to the professional or commercial tanneries to have it done properly. that kind of work is pretty hard to try doing at home.
