Bird-Watching in a War Zone (Extra Scene from 'The War Next Door')

In August, al Nusra Front jihadists took control of Syria’s side of the border crossing with Israel and kidnapped over 40 United Nations peacekeepers - who have since been released.
But al Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-affiliate, isn’t Israel’s only threat from Syria. President Bashar al-Assad’s military, in a possible effort to bait Israel into its civil war to shore up Arab sympathies, has been lobbing mortars across the border. Just a few weeks ago, the Israeli military shot down a Syrian plane flying over the Golan Heights - the first time it has done so since the 1980s.
In this extra scene, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky encounters a group of bird-watchers at Mount Hermon - Israel's highest point, overlooking the border between Lebanon and Syria. The highly-secured military location houses a nature preserve that's a major destination for bird-watchers from around the world, seemingly unfazed by the conflict occurring nearby.

I dont understand how people in these comments insult all these Syrian people even after all theyve been through. If you were in the same position you would want some help from someone in a more gifted position.

Okay, let's be honest here. Who would actually take most of their money and use it to help people like them. I'm sorry to say this but I wouldn't, why should I care about a human in a far away country that doesent affect me in any way. Human are selfish, it's a trait that we all have. Sure some would go to Syria and go through hell to save some people in another country but there are quite few of them out there. If could save one person for every euro or dollar I donated I would do that but only to feel not guilty for being able to save someone or because I would feel like I gained something out of it, like self satisfaction. If everybody around donated a thousand euros we maybe would have been able to save a lot of people. But who does that ? Well my mother does it and my father but I can't get why sometimes. And other times I feel like they are doing the right thing as many people don't have it as good as us. Long story short, humans are selfish, mostly cares about themselves and if you think rationally there's no reason to do it but there's something that makes us want to do it sometimes. Maybe out of pity or because they feel good about themselves if they do. Anyway I don't really know why I wrote this comment, first I was going to write why people don't give a damp about someone they don't know but then I changed my mind.

Johannes carling I was in my philosophy class and we had a debate regarding if there is anything truly unselfish you could do. One popular example was charity, people give to feel better about themselves, to give them mental security, if one day I was in their position some like me could help, or even to show off. I dont know why people give charity, but I do know it helps the less fortunate and in the end, isnt that all that matters? Also my main point was why would people insult these Syrians after all theyve been through(needless to say Vice commenters arent always the best people), not charity, but your comment was still very interesting, mainly the end, you rarely see someone change their mind/ looking from a different perspective in youtube comments. Its a good and respectable trait. Many people pretend to have it, but usually dont(probably even myself).

Aman Rahmani You have at least one good trait and that is that you actually make sense. Or in other words you don't just swear and instead you write some good points. You can't really talk to people in youtube when it is about these things and I can't really talk about subjects like this in school as I am still in ninth grade( I'm a from Sweden ), most people only want to talk about games or something else but there are some people who like to talk about politics, news what's morally right or wrong e.t.c. But it's nice to talk with someone who actually can make arguments for his side instead of just rambling and swearing. And I actually think that you have a good understanding of others views on society. I am just assuming, but if you are in high school what are you studying and where. You don't have to answer, I was just curious.

Johannes carling Im not going to lie I thought you were much older than me. Im eighteen, Im in College here in the Good ol USA specifically California. My major is business and Im minoring in Computer Science. And yeah its nice talking about things that actually matter in a respectable manner. Since your not the insultive kind, out of curiosity, I know in Europe, many people dislike the amount of Muslim Immigration. Can I hear your opinion on the matter and why does Europe have such an open door policy?
@Jckiller122
@Jckiller122 9 жыл бұрын
Aman Rahmani I can't talk for the rest of Europe but here in Sweden we are split. The majority of swedes think that we should accept more immigrants or as much as we are doing now. But most people agree that we have a bad immigration policy. They think that immigrants don't get assimilated as fast as they should. And that we don't help them enough in the right way. But we are torn on what policy we should have. But a lot of people (I think) are afraid to express their opinions as it is very easy in Sweden to get called a racist. You can say something negative about immigration and get stamped a racist. But for most people it doesent matter if they are Muslims, Jews, syrian e.t.c as long as they need help and a place to stay they can come. But it's getting worse here in Sweden as or education are getting worse in my opinion. There isn't any discipline in the classroom, everybody just do as they want and the teacher doesn't have a say in the matter. And we lack enough jobs to support everybody. Ever since fascism everybody has been really afraid to say anything that can seem as racism or hate to another group or minority. We have become more open about immigration as we have committed many atrocities before. And the government's seem to sympathies with the people that have it bad. And there are a lot of other reasons that I don't fully know about. But I doubt we will have such an open door policy for long as right radicals are rising up everywhere. In Greece we have the golden dawn and in France we have the national front or something. EU basically set most of the immigration laws in Europe and they have been very open minded to immigration.

Erik3E Why? Vice is not better other media. I like works by some journalists but in general there are nothing special.Look for example on Simon - he made super reporting in Ukraine and compare to his new videos from syrian border where he don't bring nothing new or original.I guess, for last 2 years Vice made at best 5 decent documenaries.Their site even worst when it comes to news reporting.
