The largest crowd in the history of Belmont Park assembled to see if Smarty Jones could become a Triple Crown winner. At 3-10 he was one Smarty Jones was one of the shortest-priced favorites the "Test of the Champion," has seen. A very New York team of Marylou Whitney, Nick Zito, and Edgar Prado spoiled the party as longshot Birdstone rallied late to deny him.
Final time: 2:27 2/5
Owner: Marylou Whitney Stables
Trainer: Nicholas Zito
Jockey: Edgar Prado

@@gregorymartin2155 that's the New York way! They have been doing that to "Outsiders" since racing began in New York. Example big horse in for a stake from California . Sprint race late 70s . Cordero sent a horse who usually comes from behind head and head with the Invader . He finished up the track and as Woody Stephens is leading the horse into the winner's circle Cordero shouts over the crowd " We got him Woody !!" Look how they treated California Chrome in the Belmont or Rachael Alexandra in y Woodward

All these years later and I STILL get the same feeling in my gut when I watch this. No knock against Birdstone, but like so many others, I was in love with Smarty....and he ran a valiant race. If anything, I just feel you cannot really go to the lead early in the Belmont (unless you are Da'Tara!) and expect to have enough left at the finish. Interestingly...Afleet Alex ran the race that I thought Smarty SHOULD have run, the following year, when he won impressively. Great horse, great trainer, great owners, and a great call. Never gets old. I was at the Preakness, so I got to see Smarty run..and to this day, he is the best horse I have ever seen race in person.

Track was fast; pace was reasonable considering the speed of the track; Stewart Elliott had a good hold on Smarty Jones and only asked him from a furlong out. Maybe Birdstone ran a huge one and won it? John Servis took the blame for having the horse too keyed up. Probably wasn't his fault either - Birdstone was bred for distance and Smarty Jones was not.

His tendons were shot. He wasn't in pain but couldn't run. Dirt racing and Triple Crown prep burned him up. He could have run for years on the grass like his dad, Elusive Quality. He traces back to Secrettame, a lightly-raced daughter of Secretariat who won two races by a dozen before getting injured. Sire Sired Gone West, Smarty's paternal grandfather.

would someone explain...Why did the Jockey of Smarty Jones not hold him back from leading the race so soon? Why is it believed that it was a deliberate attempt to cost Smarty Jones the Triple Crown when clearly the jockey on SJ allowed him to lead the race too early? Had he held him back a little longer maybe SJ would have had a bit more left? I am asking a genuine question. I don't know enough about horse racing strategy to understand. What I see is SJ going out too early in front when it is such a long race. Is it a genuine concern to try to stay in the lead so that your horse doesn't get boxed in by the horses that pass you??? Thank you in advance for answering my question.

Maybe the jockey didn't know how fast they were going? Could he even hold Smarty Jones back?
@lisawilder3640
@lisawilder3640 10 жыл бұрын
I am not a horse racing expert. A jockey hopefully will be kind enough to answer your question. If the pace is fast out of the starting gate and a horse or a couple of horses set the pace, it forces all the other horses to run faster to stay within stalking position. In the case of Smarty Jones perhaps the jockey wanted to get out in front to get a good position. No jockey wants their horse to get boxed in, which happened to California Chrome before Victor took him to the outside to get out of that position. Once the horse is boxed in then the race is pretty much lost. They say the Belmont is a jockey's race meaning strategy is more important than perhaps the other races. Without watching the replay of the race I'd say it wasn't the smartest move to take SJ out fast, not when the race is a mile and a half.
@MoMoMyPup10
@MoMoMyPup10 9 жыл бұрын
Lisa Wilder According to the comments above, the pace was slow and if he stalked he would have gotten tired sooner. Most of the time with the best horse this will work, but maybe because SJ wasn't bred for 12 furlongs Birdsong was able to catch him. Racing is funny -- you really don't know what you're going to get from your horse when facing this tough test.

I was working at river downs that day in the Charlson broadcasting simulcast studio and had the exacta box. My coworkers were yellin at me bec I was happy. Told them to hug it. like bobby frankel said after empire maker won , "hey I like money ". They finally tore down that hole of race track River Downs. Mice everywhere, co-workers passing out from Vicodin od's and the fire alarms don't work.

Smartie started to slow the minute that ldiot jocket started to whip him. you can actually see him throw his head at the first swat. He won the Preakness without being touched.

At this 2004 Belmont in New York, Elmont there was no way the powers that be up there were going to let a philly horse win the T Crown ,horse racing most prestigious event , that is why they buried those horses just so that Smarty would not win that triple. That is why people say that they Hate New York!!! It will be that way forever, sadly but I hope not true, but sadly.

Well horse run thier own fucking race. You either run your pace or you go with leaders or hsng in the back. No one forced Smarty Jones to do shit.

@@boswindle9050 His jockey ran a bull shit race no doubt, but those mother fuckers up there, sandbagged that horse. The all sacrificed their horde so that Smarty would have been spent down the stretch, and it worked to perfection.

@@ericday4505 again no one made Smarty Jones run at the front. You see horses hang in the back all the time ..why because the bait horses will tire and the horses that ran their will pace will go get them. As the jocky said for Smarty Jones. He did do nothing wrong the other horse just came got him. If you know the Belmont is a 1 1/2 mile why the hell would you go out with the rabbits knowing full well that wont be your competition in the end.

@@boswindle9050 My point exactly, the Belmont is a mile and a half, and it seems like the stretch run is forever, if you have the best horse, you cannot get baited into running out early, horses are born to run, as the jockey and trainer you have gotta know exactly when to let your horse run. I put that loss on the jockey, with the trainer also getting his share. Still, though that was a great year for that horse, undefeated Derby winner, not to bad. Supremely confident horse, had some injury issues as I am sure you may know, but still an all timer and great competitor.

@@ericday4505 i agree with you. People are blaming the other horses and said they did something shady by putting bait horses in the race. Doesn't matter who is in the race run your race and you have the best horse it will show last 3 furlongs. I agree i think jockey fault. Sent him to early and couldn't hold on.

I hit the fat exacta box on that one. Watched it at work in the simulcast studio at River Downs. All the needledick punks I worked with, my mgr Tom and co worker Charles lost tons of money and were trash talking me before the race. I gave it right back to them and they were ready to fight me . I said suck it wuss boys , jump like a frog whenever you're ready. All talk. I was sorta bummed smarty didn't win, but hey like Bobby Frankel said:"I like money"

Believe or Not, I really dont care. This was the biggest score I ever made of a single race. I had $100.00 to win on the "4" Birdstone. Boxed a $20.00 Exacta, Birdstone and Smarty Jones. Keyed Birdstone with Smarty Jones/ with All in Tri.. Thank you Jerry Bailey, with Eddington. Bailey softened Smarty Jones. Stewart Elliot took the bait. Payout: $2.00 Win Bet "4" Birdstone $74.00- $2.00 Exacta Box " 4/9" Birdstone, Smarty Jones Payed $139.00 $2.00 Trifecta Birdstone/with/Smarty Jones/ with ALL Payed $1,589.00. Edgar Prado could ride then and he is still riding at Laurel...Good Luck to all of the Horse Players
