It's amazing how how quickly these birds learn once they understand what the human wants.

I think its great you are showing parts of your masterclass. There's so many birds out there and bird owners that benefit from this that are unable to attend. I have a African grey who would just instantly fly or lunge the second I attempt to enter his room. Room because no matter how many treats or toys I put in his cage he refused to ever step foot in it. All the youtube video's I watched showed how to train a bird from a T stand, but not what to do if you couldn't get him to one. Then I seen a few of your masterclass video's about aggressive birds and it helped bunches. Anyways because of your video's I realized I had to find a way to give him a treat to start earning his trust. We have a screen door and a dog gate behind it. For some strange reason he would listen to my commands to fly to the dog gate even though he wanted to eat me. So the dog gate turned into his training T spot, I started by whistling songs to him as a start of positive reinforcement. Now the important part I needed to give him a treat, so what I started doing was stuffing walnuts and pecans into the end of a straw, opening the screen door and feeding him with the straw, and key part that I learned from one of your video's is where my hand is during this. At first my hand was lower than him so he would try to fly at me still, but as soon as I put my hand above him with the treat angled downward a bit, he no longer attempted to fly at me. So I gave him 1 walnut half or pecan half a day using this method and I slowly shortened my straw during this time, and about a month later (few days ago) I started feeding him by hand, I seen his eyes pin the first time like he was thinking about eating me but then he just gently took it and it was amazing. Couldn't have done it without your video's, now I can finally start stick training him. Also for those wondering he is bonded to my mom, he acts like a little baby around her so she takes care of feeding him and taking him around the house to explore. Soon as he hit 2 years old he wanted to eat me. thanks so much

My Ekkie boy just turned 2 years old. His vocabulary has exploded. His intelligence is amazing. He talks when he has something to say. He doesn't babble. So far twice I asked him if he wanted to go for a ride and both time's, *Alright* he also figured out that I'm partially deaf. He said, *Door* I showed what door means. When I opened it, my handyman was behind it, said he had been knocking. He heard Saint tell me, *Door*. CRAZY smart!!!!! I wear hearing aids, when I'm home I remove them. He's something else.

My male Eclectus passed away Feb 26, 2019, I'm still devastated. Kabuki was very intelligent, loving, and had an extensive vocabulary. If someone is ready to move up to a parrot, I highly recommend an Eclectus. They're very chill, but require a special diet that you need to be diligent about. They'll be your forever 2 year old.

I don't own a parrot (yet), but these masterclass videos are really helpful at explaining bird behavior, body language, and how to properly communicate with them. Hopefully when the time comes I will be able to put all this knowledge to good use!

So I live in Belgium, and here, parrot pets are not very common, therefore there are no real rescues for them. But since I am quite stubborn and want to be around parrots in order to see if it would be an ok pet for me, I volunteer at a wildlife rescue where they happen to be the only place in Brussels where they take parrots. It’s sad to see that a lot of them are just afraid of humans, which shows that clearly, the owners thought of them as decoration. So I talked to the manager, and asked if I could take some of the birds one by one to train them, in order for them to find a family quicker. She was reluctant at first because they don’t do foster, but she gave in because she agrees that it would make them be adopted quicker. So for people who say that they can’t volunteer because there are no rescues nearby, please please really search, I learned a lot about parrots there and it is basically my only window to the parrot world, because there aren’t really exotic animal stores around him. So please try to volunteer before getting one!

My little GCC was a shoulder rusher too, and because of your videos (and your Family Friendly Parrot courses! Worth every penny!), I used this technique to get her to step up off the shoulder on command, and it works sooooo well. She also used to resist going back into her cage, but once I started rewarding her for going into her cage, problem solved!

At school we have to write an essay about our hero so I have decided to do it about Bird tricks! Obviously!!! JamieLeigh and Dave you guys mean the world to me, you are my inspiration, my idols... My green cheek is doing AMAZING following your advice! He isn't scared of my hands, let's me check his wings and feet without complaining and he grooms my fingers all the time 😅 flight training is going very well but when we go in the outdoor aviary he doesn't wanna move away from me lol so we are working on that! When I was younger I was attacked by birds outside while playing. Ever since I am kinda scared around them because I don't understand their body language at all. Do you have a video that explains it to me enough? Like if I were to come visit your house what should I watch out for in birds to see how the are feeling? Like a 101 for visitors? I am 13 I have a parakeet and I love him (he is a bit of a narcissist.) I am thinking about getting an eclectus, I am starting to do more research about them.

Can you guys do a video on how to retrain birds? My cockatiel is tamed and was hand fed but after a day and night in the wild(he flew to my shoulder and slipped off just as I opened a door when he was 5-6 months old he's year old in April) any hands on training hasn't happened I've tried but he wont do it. Before this happened I had him doing tricks and could do whatever to him. He'll learn a song in only a few times of hearing it and he can talk(whistle-talk) so he's super smart but I miss the bird that wanted to learn and would recall when told. Any help?

My cockatiel is a bit unique because when we found/rescued him from outside last summer, he had half of all of his toes gone. There were no visible wounds on the feet, so it was long healed, but his balance is bad and he dislikes being touched. Though he loves to be on me/with me, and has separation anxiety, if I touch his feet while hes on my hand he doesn't like it at all and flies away.. There also isn't much foot to hold on to. :( He steps up alright, without me touching him, but his balance is the issue I believe. Any workarounds to helping him trust that I won't let him fall?

For some of us, not possible to have my parrots effectively perch on my hand. I need my hands/ arms because I use a wheel chair. I do get nipped once in a while...assume my parrot's trying to communicate as he cannot really see my expressions on my shoulder..........target training also almost impossible as one needs both hands to do so effectively. FYI guys. Not necessarily a criticism.

Hmm seems it would be "easier" to get the step up from the font of the parrot rather then forcing it to have to turn around? I have always seen people do Step up from the front.

My rescue eclectus plucks/breaks his feathers and has no personality. He just sits and won't interact with you. Have tried introducing target training but he just gets angry. I recently stopped feeding anything that wasn't fresh and have noticed a difference in his personality but don't know how to bring him out of himself or build his confidence. We have had him just over a year.

They say that parrots "have the intelligence of a 4 year kid" all its life, but, there are lots of 4 years'kids who have more and less intelligence! To me, the parrots seem much more intelligent, and emotionally, they capture, momentaneously, the mood we are in.

I really have to say this... that Eckie was a SPEED EATER compared to my Eckie. 😂😂😂 If I give my Eckie a quarter of a peanut, it’ll take him at least ten minutes to eat it. He literally peels little slivers with his beak. Picture using a potato peeler on a peanut, and you’ll understand what I mean. He’s impossible to train with treats because of this. Even if he hasn’t eaten and he’s starving, ten minutes with a quarter of a peanut. No exaggeration!! But I’m lucky... my baby boy, Jax the Eckie, is more like a dog than a parrot. He loves to please me. So when I get excited over him doing what I’m trying to get him to do, he does it again and again. Like hopping from one perch to another (pre-flight training)... once he knew that’s what I wanted him to do, he’d do it over and over again, just to make me happy. Same with spinning. 😊 I love my boy. 🥰

Be careful with "Emotional Intelligence" - there're been a lot of assumptions debunked by Psychologists. Also, babies are born with personalities, my boys exhibited different traits from day 1. Whether good or bad or both, those personality traits can become a strength or weakness depending on the individual. Placing ALL responsibility on your parents will lower self-responsibility but also self agency. AGENCY is the ability to choose for one's self, blaming others can decrease your own agency.

You call it giving the bird an option. How about the option of not being kept in captivity? Encouraging keeping parrots as pets is wrong. Making money off of it is disgusting. Yes, some need to be in captivity for breeding. Leave that to the experts. Otherwise there's not one good reason to keep parrots in captivity, unless you include profit as a motivation.
