He arrived this morning, sat in one of my plumb trees for awhile, checking out the yard for dogs and cats and who the other birds were, then promptly came to my window side seed dish and made himself at home.
A few hours after this was recorded, he had settled down and was getting along much better with all the other birds. In other words, ignoring them as they came to feed right next to him. I guess he just had to show them he was not going to be bullied like the new guy. HAHA.
So, it's cold and windy out there and the window is closed now. Hopefully he will be here when it warms up enough to open it and get some clearer pictures.

@@Iam4wine I am pretty sure they are a more Southern bird, nut this was an easy winter here at least and looks like it will be a warmer summer. It's been 8 years now and I look for them every year, but my hope is dwindling. :o)

Wow, what a beautiful color and coloring with the black. I have never seen these before! Amazingly beautiful and varied life there is. Poor titmouse, he could get anything. I wonder if they are more docile in general, or if that one was more "chicken" than usual. :)
@BirdWhisperer46
@BirdWhisperer46 10 жыл бұрын
The Titmouse did eventually get a peanut and a few hours after this was shot, the Tanager had calmed down and they were all eating fine together. This seems to be a tactic for all new birds when they show up. they have to establish a pecking order.

He was eating sunflower meats that one of our local hardware stores sells. Shelled sunflower seeds with no salt or anything on them. But, he has not been back since they started a nest across the road in the woods. the only reason he came to my dish was because we had an all time record cold and long winter here. There are no bugs to eat. Even in late June, we have nothing but flies and midges. No crickets, no grasshoppers or the other usual bugs we have this time of year. All my yard birds are coming to my seed dish, my robins come for freeze dried meal worms, catbirds too. Birds that never come this close are losing their fear of humans to feed themselves and their brood this year. The seed dish has white millet, black oil sunflower seeds and meats, and shelled peanuts called pickouts. I also put out grape jelly for the oriels.

+BirdWhisperer46 i have rarely seen them too. They are reclusive and usually woodland birds. I have seen one out near my parents but in a wooded area. Bluebirds are more common in their birdbath. Eastern bluebirds. I have also seen an indigo bunting too. Which are tiny.

Two of them just flew in one day. Stayed the summer and never came back. They see the other birds from miles around coming to my feeders, so they just follow. LOL They built a nest high in the trees across the road, where they could see the food. LOL

Excuse me, how can I attract that bird to my garden? A year ago it arrived and I would like to see it again, in your case did that type of bird visit you again in the following years?
@BirdWhisperer46

No, it never came back. I saw it a few time across the road nesting high up in the trees, but it never came to my feeder again that year or since. That tells me it must be very rare.
