Oh, my! Your eyes got so wide the first time you heard Geoff hit that final sub-harmonic note - I love to see people react to just how low this man can go! I would certainly recommend watching Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, where this song came from. The movie is a musical, with the songs written by Danny Elfman from the rock band Oingo Boingo. The movie is stop-motion animation with puppets - technically it's more complicated than that, but you can get the idea from that. Tim Burton has created and directed a couple of different films using that style, the other most well-known is The Corpse Bride.

It is a movie directed by Tim Burton so it is very strange. The premise is that every holiday has its own world and Jack, the mayor of Halloweentown, hears about Christmas town and Santa Claus and decides he wants to have all that fun and things go crazy. In this scene Santa has been captured and the bogeyman, Mr. Oogie Boogie has him. The movie is strange but it is a really really good. That last note was the first time he had used a subharmonic in one of their videos. I don’t know a lot about music but I understand from other viewers that it was an E1, way down toward the end of the keyboard. Since then he’s gotten a lot lower. He said it took him a long time to be able to hit that note and now he just throws them out there like they’re nothing. This one really featured him because it’s basically re-creating the scene from the movie except his little minions are there. Santa was played by Geoff‘s brother-in-law and the voice was done by Eli who was the little demon in red. They did four songs from the movie. In addition to this they did This is Halloween which has its own little plot, What’s This and Kidnap the Sandy Claws. Halloween is their favorite holiday and they have done a few others as well. They aren’t always jack-o’-lanterns and black cats. But they are usually associated with the spooky season. They covered Superstition, Grim Grinning Ghosts (from Disney’s Haunted Mansion) and I’ve Got Friends in the Other Side from Princess and the Frog. They are working on this year‘s release, but they live in Orlando and Hurricane Ian caused them some problems. As soon as they get power back they’ll finish the edits on that. As a patron I’ve seen the behind the scenes and heard the MP3 and it is really good. The bass, Geoff Castellucci, has a solo channel as well that he started when the pandemic forced them out of their touring schedule. He did the Headless Horseman from a 1950s era Disney film the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and last year put out Monster Mash. He just released Ghost Riders in the Sky. On his personal channel he almost always arranges for four or five part harmonies, singing all the lines himself. For filming, he films a version of himself for every part. For his Halloween offerings he usually goes full make up and sometimes it’s hard to believe it’s the same person.

Those extremely low notes Geofff is able to hit are called subharmonic tones. They are produced by hitting an already low note and then relaxing your throat (specifically the vestibular folds) which causes an additional resonance. With practice this can be produced and controlled on demand. He has an entire video on his channel that explains the techniques he uses: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jrF8lLx4rbDTeoE.html

Geoff uses a technique called sub-harmonics. By using vocal fry he makes is sound as if he's singing an octave lower than he actually is. He has a whole video about subharmonics on his personal channel.

@johndeeregreen4592

For the most part, everything except the last note was within his natural voice. The last note was a subharmonic bass note. It's still produced 100% by him, though. It's a technique where a note exactly an octave higher is produced, the vocal cords are allowed to go into a slight vocal fry, and is controlled at the pitch, resulting in a pitch exactly an octave (some cases a 5th) lower than the one produced.

The very deep note at the end is called a subharmonic, and it's a bit hard to explain. Basically he's singing a note one octave higher, and he mutes it, and since every note is actually composed of many different pitches, this makes the one octave lower tone become the dominant, loudest sound

Some centuries ago, people thought virtuoso musicians like Liszt and Paganini had sold their souls to the devil to get to their level of mastery and skill on their respective instrument. I think Geoff, had he lived at those times, would be there with them. The dude descended from a B4 to an E1 in about 6 bars with no effort whatsoever. 3½ octaves. And that's not even his full range apparently. Very impressive. BTW: Hear Geoff hit a B0 in the Halo theme cover Voiceplay did. Astonishing.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 animated Christmas movie conceived by Tim Burton. Voiceplay's Oggie Boogie's song (a song sung by the Boogie Man in the movie) is but one scene from that movie. However, yes, if you are able to watch the original movie it would definitely help you put this Voiceplay performance into perspective. The lead singer (the bass singer) in this particular performance is Geoff Castellucci. He also has a series of videos of solo performances that are also very much worth checking out.

My opinion: of course you should watch "The Nightmare before Christmas!" You are correct. It is an animated feature with some great, if a bit quirky, music. The song you started to hear at the end of this reaction, called "This is Halloween," is the first song of the film. Actually the entire film is quirky but it's a gem. Jack Skellington is my favorite Disney character with Sally, his girlfriend, a close second. Give it a watch!

Great reaction! I think Geoff found the piano scale too limiting and is now purely on the Richter scale. The other members seem to be on a reciprocal - the lower Geoff sings, the other members go to break the high barriers. Check out their new one "In the Hall of the Mountain King". They take a pure instrumental and turn it into a comedy acapella with no words. For harmony goodness try Wayward Son or I Can't Make You Love Me. I doubt you'll find anything of theirs that you don't like.

While we're in the Christmas spirit, another great Voiceplay Christmas performance is "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch". This has to be the closest rendition to the song from the original 1966 animation of, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", which used Boris Karloff's voice to sing the title song, as well as the narration. However, Geoff Castalucci's version is MUCH better than the original: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bsySfZNkrc7LeYk.html
