In 1978, at summer music camp, all of the violinists were competing to play this song best, and all the guitarists were competing to play it best, and all the singers were competing to sing it best... I can't remember another time when one song dominated the collective consciousness so much. It was a perfect moment, and a perfect song.

Kerry Livgren, the guy who wrote this song says that it was a case of 'listen to your wife.' He says he was practicing guitar in their kitchen and he had developed a finger picking pattern to help train his fingers and his wife said, 'You need to do something with that.' Irritated that she interupted his practice he waived her off saying, 'nah, its just a practice drill.' He says she then stepped in, put her finger in his face and said, 'No. You _need_ to *do* something with *_that.'_* Now taking it seriously, he wrote this song and the now famous finger picked guitar part of this song is that 'practice drill.'

Thank you for your reaction to this iconic song. At times it is hard to imagine some songs aren't know by everybody. That is one of those things which happens as you grow older. It is therefore I am so happy you are traveling this musical journey through the ages and genres. And Dust in the wind is a song that when you have heard it once you can never forget it: until you're dust in the wind yourself. I am glad I was blessed to have heard this song so many times and I wish you the same. Listen to it again and again, I think it will never gets boring. Is the song too short? Maybe it is but i think that adding to the song might break its dreamy wholeness which it is now. The lyrics and music fit exactly and, to me, for exact the right amount of time, but I understand why you feel it is too short. ~ Vals

On the topic of this song eventually growing more unknown as you grow older, if it makes you feel any better, I plan on getting the right to use this classic song in a future suburban-styled horror film or game of mine when I get into my film career. The song fits a very peaceful and nostalgic suburban vibe which is why the Final Destination franchise took advantage of that since it fits the style and that is how I found out about this amazing song

As @scalefree said, this started as a finger exercise. From an interview with Kerry Livgren, the guitarist and lyricist (on the left in the video): It actually has a really interesting, almost humorous history, which is in such contrast to what the song’s about, but it actually, I was trying to improve my skills as an acoustic guitarist. I’ve always been an electric player. And I came up with this, uh, finger exercise, which was basically Dust in the Wind. I was sitting in my music room practicing and my wife kept walking by the room and she’d stick her head in the door and she’d go “You’d better do something with that”. And I said “Honey, this is just an exercise. This is not going anywhere. You know, this is just something to improve my skill.” And she kept bugging me and finally she said “Put some words to that, sing a melody, because I’m telling you, you really got something there.” So I happened to be reading a book of Native American poetry, and I don’t remember which one it was, but it, there was a particular poem I was reading that was alluding to the fact that, you know, our life here, our physical life, is just this brief thing, and also the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible, it says all is vanity, and uh, for some reason that just seemed to go with that melodic line. So I threw it together, literally threw it together, and again came in the last day of rehearsal, and the guys were all there. And you know Kansas is this big, progressive, heavy, rocking band, and I walk in with this acoustic guitar and say “OK, Vicky says, you know my wife says I need to play this for you guys.” And so I sit down and I played the song for them on the acoustic guitar, and I sang it, which if anything was going to kill the song, that would do it, and I looked up when I was done and the guys were all, just kind of had this blank look on their faces and they said “Where has that been?” I said, “What do you mean? You liked that thing?” And they said “Absolutely - we gotta do this.” And I literally wrote the string arrangement in a motel room down the road from the studio, ‘cause I was trying to figure a way to include the violin in the song, and we were doing a session that afternoon, and I just wrote the string lines in a motel room in Nashville. Here's that interview. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNCiaMuc25-wdmg.html&ab_channel=DaveLawrence

These guys, original Kansas broke up many years ago. The violin player left the band and became a photographer or something like that. He died about two years ago from complications from a routine procedure. He was in his 70’s. The rest of Kansas recorded and performed with a new violinist for years. The singer is still alive and still performing as Kansas as of a few years ago but his voice now is a shadow of what it was when he was young. Amazing and talented band back then.

Steve Walsh is the singer on the left, who sings lead on most of the Kansas catalog. The late great Robbie Steinhardt is the singer on the right with the violin. Robbie, like Steve was a jack of all trades, providing different instruments to round out the orchestration of the band’s songs as needed. The guitarist on the left with the blonde hair is the phenomenal Kerry Livgren. This song grew out of one of his finger exercises that his best girl admired and told him that’s so pretty, you should use this for a song. Props to the band for keeping the studio track sparse which contributes to it’s haunting introspection - all the more when you consider the tremendous esteem the Kansas rhythm section had earned by this time! Again and again, Kansas chose in favor of what serves the song best. 🤘🏻

Tyvm biss this album played a prominent part in my teenage years and listening to it was like a religious experience. Without giving it a lot of thought but from the top of my head I would say the song titled The Wall was my favorite. Great reaction, keep up the good work and as always keep it cute.

Lovely reaction, Bisscute! I love it when younger folks listen to the music of my youth but sometimes they don't quite understand the meaning or the lyrics. However, your reaction is spot on! 'Dust in the Wind' is one of those songs we used to listen to on our car's cassette player while parked at a spot overlooking town. Yes, we may have had a cold beverage in hand! This album was the first album I bought at college in 1978! Thank you for your wonderful reaction!

You need to explore Dire Straits! I would highly recommend «Telegraph road» live alchemy! Also «sultans of swing» from the same concert! Other songs are «tunnel of love», «brothers in arms» and «Money for nothing»😁 Mark Knopfler really takes you on a journey with his amazing fingerstyle playing and unique voice! I think you would love them❤

Thank you for your wonderful reaction to this classic song. I am a native Kansan who has been listening to this band since way back in the day. (1980 or so.) There is another level to the words Everything is Dust in the Wind besides life on this world being brief. In Kansas the wind is blowing here frequently. When it is too dry. We get dust storms that turn the whole sky an orange/brown color. It gives you a different take on this song.

I used to listen to music like this all the time. Lying down on the couch with my headphones on and playing it on a loop, while it rained outside. A great way to spend an afternoon.
