Hello! I had a great time at a Fall craft show in Vancouver, and I'd love to share how it went and how I prepared for it. Note that I'm mainly describing my indoor market experiences. If you have more questions beyond what was covered, feel free to leave a comment and I'll try my best to answer them.
I attended my first markets in 2017 and I spent a lot of time acquiring what I needed for my display and trying out many iterations of showcasing my books. At first I placed my journals and sketchbooks between bookends to show off the exposed spines, and then I decided that displaying the covers would look more appealing and less cluttered. That's how I designed the home made tabletop shelves. Designing a display is a fun creative process that I enjoy. Pinterest is a great source for inspiration!

When I started doing craft markets, there was very little information online about doing them. So here is the info I wish I had before doing my first one. This is basically about setting up your space. Find out how big a space you will have and mark off a space that size on your floor with masking tape. Then set up your table or tables within that space. Then lay out your items and display pieces and move them around until you're happy. Then invite a friend to take a look and make comments and suggestions. It's often hard to be objective about your own setup, and a friend's viewpoint can be very valuable. Once you're happy with your setup, take a picture with your cell phone, because no matter how sure you are that you'll remember where everything goes, if it's your first show, you'll be nervous and may forget. Load your car the night before!!! That way you'll feel more relaxed in the morning, knowing that everything is done. When you load your car, load what you'll need first, last. This will probably be your hand truck. The morning of, leave early so that you will have plenty of time to set up and not be frantically rushing before the show opens. If you finish setting up early, walk around and talk to your fellow vendors. These are your people! You speak the same language, you are people who make things and you have a lot in common. Also, take notes. Every craft market is a learning experience. Enjoy!`

as a very anxious and socially awkward person, i really appreciated the part when you metioned you have some phrases/sentences prepared beforehand when talking to ppl. i can't count the instances when i had to rehearse what i was going to say bc i get tounge-tied when i'm stressed and overwhelmed. i have so much respect for people who have to talk to strangers bc that's one of the direct ways for their business to grow. it may not seem like much but thank you for saying that. i've been watching you for quite a while now and i'm always left feeling so inspired, but not knowing what to do with that inspiration. a small shy dream of mine is to maybe one day have my own small bookbinding business but i have a very long way to go and so much to learn. i made like four books so far, with various levels of success but i love the process of making them so much. it's amazing to see something made with my own hands. anyways, let me just say i love everything you do and what you stand by. keep up the amazing work and i really wish you the best of luck in your personal and professional life! much love

As a small business artisan for over 30 years, I enjoyed watching your video. While what you spoke about is old hat to me, I found your manner to be charming and informative. I'm glad to see what the next generation is doing. BTW, have you considered booking fountain pen tradeshows? I believe your product would be a great fit for the audience there. Good luck to you and your small craft business. :)

Oooooo, I loved this video! I made a living with hand crafted items back in the 80s and 90s and sold at many crafts fairs and flea markets. This craft fair made me so nostalgic for those days! I loved that you shared the other booths around you which really showed us the talents that are out there. At the markets I went to, I always loved getting to know the crafters around me and during slow times we'd watch after each other's booths. I loved to do a fast drive-by through the fair to see what others were selling and to grab a snack from the food trucks. Those were good days! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for posting this. I've been thinking a lot about my bookbinding and where I want to take it. Doing craft shows has been on my mind as my mother does them for her crafts but wasn't sure where to start with my books. I love your content and it keeps me inspired for future projects and my continued learning!

So glad you had a successful market and enjoyed it! I’ve done craft shows/markets for many, many years and while they are a lot of work (and sometimes a financial crap shoot), I always loved connecting with my customers face to face and getting their feedback on my products. For me, that’s always the best part of selling at markets.

Helpful hint when transporting fabric covers or table cloths - I roll them around a dowel or skinny cardboard roll like from wrapping paper rolls and insert into a mailing tube. Keeps them wrinkle free and clean.

Again, I look forward to viewing more videos until I either fall asleep after binge watching, or my phone dies lol… I ramble when I’m excited 😁lol….take care for now ☺️👋 - DeborahYah 🍯🐝

Hi there, loved this video, and totally enjoy your channel. I'm doing a craft Faire and would love to know where you got the standing unit on the table to display your books? I've been struggling with keeping my "precious" journals visible, and reachable but not lying flat on my table. Thanks for sharing your works and process.

I made the shelves myself! However I'm moving and leaving the shelves behind, and considering a table-top shelf from Vertical Ledge, who makes packable furniture for vendors like us. Maybe check them out!

Very good information. Q: For the books that you do not have in clear bags……what are your " customer" handling guidelines/rules? Not all shoppers are going to be considerate while handling the merchandise!

No rules... It's a risk I take and I've rarely had issues. I stick to indoor markets where possible, the outdoor elements are unfriendly to paper.
