7:48 Learn more about vitamin B1!
Today I want to cover the bizarre symptoms of vitamin B1 deficiency.
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is important for your nerves, and a deficiency in vitamin B1 can impact all parts of your nervous system.
Vitamin B1 is necessary to give energy to a specific cell that makes myelin. Myelin is a coating around your nervous system. If that coating breaks down because of vitamin B1 deficiency, various negative things can start to happen.
Top causes of vitamin B1 deficiency:
• Refined sugar and carbohydrates
• Tea
• Coffee
• Wine
• Dried fruit
• Alcohol
• Raw fish
• Metformin
• Chlorine (tap water)
• Antibiotics
• Antacids
• Diuretics
• Birth control pills
• SSRIs
• Seizure medications
• HPV vaccinations
• Betel nut
Bizarre symptoms of vitamin B1 deficiency:
• Tourette syndrome
• Ataxia
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder
• ADHD
• POTS syndrome
• MS symptoms
• Fibromyalgia symptoms
• Chronic fatigue syndrome
• Peripheral neuropathy
It's important to pinpoint what's causing your thiamine deficiency, so you can start doing something about it. You can also start taking vitamin B1-just be sure it's a natural version. Unfortified nutritional yeast is a great natural source of vitamin B1. If you have a problem related to your myelin sheath, you may also want to take benfotiamine.

This is no joke... B1 deficiency was literally causing me full blown autonomic failure. From heart issues to GI dysmotility from my esophagus all the way to my descending colon. Nutritional yeast and benfotiamine quite literally saved my life. I went to GI specialists, neurologists, sleep specialists, cardiologists and it wasn't until finally I saw a pulmonology specialist of all things... because for some reason I was getting severe shortness of breath... and he was so blown away by the fact that I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs even though my heart and lungs were structurally normal. I asked him if there could be a Nutritional explanation for these symptoms... he thought about it for a second.... and finally said... "it's a possibility... but it would have to be so bad that's it's something called beri beri (b1 deficiency) but... that's just not possible in the western world today..." I do thank him for mentioning it... but I found it so odd that he said beri beri is a possibility but then it's not possible. Haha needless to say with in 4 hours of taking Nutritional yeast my shortness of breath vanished. Within 24 hours my choking during my sleep vanished and with in 48 hours of taking benfotiamine my global autonomic dysfunctions all started to improve simultaneously. This stuff is no joke. Thank you Dr. Berg for all of your insights. It truly does save lives. I will be letting my specialists know what happened and that YES beri beri is still alive and hurting people today. Cheers!

@@penultimania4295 how is a chiropractor not a doctor? They still have to have boards and licensing. I’ve learned FAR MORE from him than any other. Usual doctors are either arrogant or incompetent or both. Mostly it’s both as they’re lazy. If it’s not an allergy pill, anti depressant, or Tylenol they’re stumped. And most anti depressants don’t work and actually cause more problems.

I have been vitamin B1 deficient 10 years I had to diagnose myself by watching doctors like you. Within two weeks my symptoms had improved at least 50% within four weeks my symptoms improved 80% and even if I don't get my other 20 back I feel like a new person. I thought it was so bad that I was going to have to go into a wheelchair and probably assisted living now I'm back my old self almost. I hope I didn't do damage that I can't undo but I'm just grateful to be where I am I'm actually walking pretty well and I get up and down my cardio problems have improved thank you so much for the videos you do you don't know it but you save lives keep up the good work

Went to a doctor because I had a long list of symptoms. The doctor did a bunch of tests and said there’s nothing wrong, in fact you’re very healthy. Then she prescribed an inhaler. I asked why would you prescribe that if there’s nothing wrong? She said..”you know.” Insinuating it was all in my head. So much for doctors. I quit junk food and doctors and started taking supplements, eating bone broth soup to heal the gut etc. All symptoms gone and now I am healthy as a horse.

@wonderwoman7969 Oh my, I really don't remember exactly what I did because it's been a year since then. No, I did not do exercise. I only took the B1 once a day from Nusapure Benfotiamine 300mg, with BioPerine. I stopped taking it after a month or so. Then, I started taking vitamins. I did some fasting and started taking D3 with K2 and magnesium from Pure, vitamin Code Raw Zinc from Garden of Life, and the Raw C vitamin Code. I also take 125mg Tocotrienols E vitamin from the company EANNATTO. I really can't say what exactly is helping me, but something or all has done wonders. I'm going to start on the B1 again. My cardiologist had told me that I needed to exercise because (in simple words) I think my cells are not getting the oxygen they need. I'm also going to start taking Beet Roots organic from gold health because it provides nitric oxide. Sorry I wrote so much

I am surprised with this video! I know vitamin B1 long time ago from Vietnam, when my mother 72 years old, one day she had severe pain in her shoulder, my brother was nurse, he injected her liquid thiamine ( it imported from French) , the pain was gone. He told me that vitamin B1 good for arthritis and nerve pain , B1 has in brown rice ( the outer layer) . I started to eat brown rice with foods, I used Vitamin B1 supplements , I have never feel pain until now ( I am 69 years old) . About 15 years ago, my friend is nurse (RN) , I talked to her about that, she was surprised, because she had never heard about that from the school and the doctor she worked with. I hope if she watches this video she will remember me and she will think about how B1 is very excellent. Who else is watching this video, should use Vitamin B1 right away. Good luck!

You don't talk to nurse for medications usually. You talked to pharmacist. As a former pharmacist student, I'm very surprised with many comments in this place saying that doctors don't bother with vitamins. My pharmacist cousin bought a lot of Bcomplex for my grandparents to help them with their joints and nerve systems. It did help a lot. it's a common practice here in Indonesia to give vitamins when people go to doctors for non-severe problem. The dose is usually one tablet a day, that's it. Not too heavy, but it does supply your body. That's why it's called supplement, isn't it?

The first time I took benfotiamine, my fatigue and brain fog disappeared the whole day. I couldn’t sleep in the night because I was so energetic. A shocking initial effect, but it felt like I was actually getting energy in my system. It’s calmed down now and I’m still tired; this is a long term chronic issue so I can’t expect it to work like magic. I haven’t taken it for a month even. I have always suspected my illness is nerve related because I will slur, drop things, stumble, have extreme fatigue, stomach pain, neuropathic pain, ocd, cognitive dysfunction, vertigo etc etc. I have never been diagnosed but told I’m completely healthy - however I am suffering extremely. I am hopeful that benfotiamine will help. I’ve been sick my whole life.

God Bless you! I’ve been sick all my life , trying to tell a medical professional about my symptoms, only to have them look at me like I was a hypochondriac, because my labs were normal! I understand what you’re saying 😢….. This went on until I got my first computer. Then I started educating myself on symptoms. In the last few years, I’ve slowly taken myself off a lot of powerful medications & trying different supplements. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I’m a lot improved, better then I’ve been in years! I’m just recently hearing about Dr. Berg this B-1 vitamin. I’m trying it next. Oh,did I mention that I was in my early 40’s when this ‘hit’ me. I was in excruciating pain & was told it probably is ‘Fibromyalgia?’. I’d never heard of it. There was no testing for it, there was no cure, only prescription pain medication. I’ve replaced most medications with supplements, and doing so much better. I’m also 77 years old 🎉….

Seems like my DNET tumor, which has glioneuronal/oligodendrocytal root, was caused partially by lack of vitamin B1. During my engineer studies I slept poorly throughout school year, therefore I craved carbs, which depleted my B1 despite other healthy habits. Which caused the tumor and seizures as effect. Thankfully I discovered 1,5 year ago dr Eric Berg and dr Sten Ekberg and I started supplement certain nutrients. I feel better than ever before, seems like I was nutritional desert. Tumor is still with me, but since it is not cancerous and mildly affects me, it is under constant watch.

I take benfotiamine but I think I'll increase my dosage. My mom's brother had his myelin sheath deteriorating up in his neck area and he was in constant pain. Had an unsuccessful surgery. Had another surgery scheduled with no guarantee to it's success. His wife was an old fashioned cook and baker. She had sweets on hand all the time. They were well into retirement when this happened. He decided to commit suicide instead of go through another surgery that had no promises for recovery to be certain. That was many decades ago. Unfortunately medical professionals have been advising procedures and medications more and more these days it seems to me. People look to them for a magic pill to fix it than to change our ways and help ourselves with good nutrition etc.

Also interesting to mention that excess chronic alcohol addiction cause B1 deficiency and cause entire body edema ( extra weight gain in short period of time from B1 deficiency) also diabetic weight gain edema in the overall body extra weight gain in short period of time ( like extra weight in a period of couple months) can be from B1 deficiency, then progresses to heart failure, enlarged heart, enlarged spleen...then finally sepsis heart failure) it happened to my 78 years old mother.I have read research about it,I insisted to the doctors to give her high dose thiamine intravenously for 5 days, but they refused to do it,,,then she passed away 2 days later after being intubated. MOST DOCTORS LET PEOPLE DIE EVERY DAY FROM LACK OF KNOWLEDGE, FROM NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO BEYOND HOSPITALS PROTOCOL OF TREATMENT. IF THEY COULD ONLY DO SOME RESEARCH ABOUT WHAT TO DO IN THE CASE OF PEOPLE DYING FROM HEART FAILURE THEY WILL BE CHOKING SURPRISED THAT ONE OR TOO EXTRA HIGH DOSES OF CERTAIN VITAMIN COULD HAVE SAVED MANY PATIENTS.

But it's not very pleasant stirred into water but I'll still do it. Sometimes I stir it into vanilla yogurt to mask it. I would consider trying Benfotiamine again but IIRC it's not cheap. All we can do is try and see and attempt to further research. On the whole my old symptoms are well-managed now. Could be the Brewer's yeast, could be the dried liver capsules (Dr Berg has a good video on liver as a superior "superfood" that is supposedly 2nd to none) God bless you and lead you

Whoa I have so many of these symptoms. Dizzy when standing, constant fatigue, tingling, numbness and aching in my hands and feet, I even have developed a weird thing where my head will sometimes jerk or twitch randomly. I thought it was anxiety. I have some nutritional yeast in the cupboard I'm going to start including in my diet to see if it helps!

Dr. Berg, i am from India and live in India. I am truly thankful to you for the information and knowledge that you share in your videos that are so valuable for maintaining health. If i may have your permission to make one request, i would request you to mention ( to the extent it is possible) the beneficial Asian/ Indian foods in each topic that you cover. Indian diet consists of varied varieties of vegetables, greens and even some fruits which are not used in the western world. Your advice would go a long way in choosing the best Indian diet in each scenario. I am probably asking for too much for which i seek your forgiveness. Your videos are priceless gift to mankind. This is also affecting her sleep. I eat ketovore but she still likes all her processed foods. I have a doctor's appointment on Friday for her. Can she be tested for low B1? Will they do that? I had MS symptoms (POTS was on my radar, peripheral neuropathy etc.) after having our 4th child. Sent to neurologist. Mri came back fine. He sent me to my OB for vitamin deficiency testing. My OB didn’t really believe this would be helpful my b1 came back LOW! And he told me this was not causing my symptoms! I believe that metronidazole causes symptoms too, wonder if it messes with B1.
@rienjen

@Origins .0000It's not all of them. Metronidazole destroys thiamine directly. There's a whole support group online for people suffering from metronidazole toxicity, and they talk about this connection between the drug and thiamine at length.

K Roberts, you are 100% correct. Metronidazole destroys B1 directly--literally, the drug rips the vitamin apart. All your symptoms could easily have been from metronidazole-induced B1 deficiency.

When you mention Cipro, please also include Levaquin, which is in the same class of antibiotics and is stronger than Cipro. They are both fluoroquinolone class antibiotics. This type of antibiotic can produce a cluster of adverse effects termed by the FDA as FQAD, for Fluoroquinolone Associated Disabilities. They affect mitochondrial dna, collagen expression, and gut microbiome health. They can have a profound effect on all kinds of tissues, cell energy, and CNS health. Some of the effects are now considered to be epigenetic. There's very little solid information on a treatment approach once a person has been affected. I have FQAD, the result of one dose of Levaquin in 1998. Your videos have been very helpful as I develop my own recovery protocol.

Thank you for this wonderful information. I am finding out how absolutely essential B vitamins are. I want to add for any women watching this that I take b12 (sublingual) and b6 tablets for total control of hot flashes. It will stop them 100%. I refuse to take hormone replacement, and I hate to be hot so I tried this after it worked for my grandmother. I have told many women about it, and it worked for them all. I noticed improvement after 1 week. After 1 month, they were completely gone. If I forget to take them for several days, then the hot flashes will return. If I am taking them religiously and they stop working, then I have to get a new bottle of one or the other. I assume I occasionally get a bottle that must be less potent or may be a bad batch. It is important to take them separately not in a b complex. I am not sure why but it does not seem to work otherwise. I guess it's not enough of the b12 and b6 to make a difference. I am sure Dr. Berg would know more about this than I do. All I care about is it works! These videos are such a blessing. Thank you Dr. Berg. I have found natural remedies for most anything that ails me and your videos have pointed to so many more!

Look up Dr. Joseph Chandy here on YT. He is a retired doctor who worked in the Durham, U.K. area for many years. He recognised many of his patients had the same symptoms he’d seen in vegetarian patients he’d treated in the Punjab, India - with B12 deficiency. There are a couple of little news report films about him. The longer one of the two features a woman who had been diagnosed with MS & was in a wheelchair. He gave her a B12 injection & within hours she was on her feet, walking. It is very possible that what is called MS may actually be due to occult (hidden) B12 deficiency. Unlike most doctors who only rely on serum blood tests, which are often very misleading (because it only measures the total amount, not how much is active or inactive - if most is inactive, it’s not getting into the cells, regardless of the blood level), Dr. Chandy was a man who knew & understood symptoms. Because of that he could join the dots. He found that at least 70% of his patients were B12 deficient. Translated to the whole population, that is a HUGE amount of people! The GMC were so alarmed by the amount he was prescribing they stopped him from prescribing it for 10 years whilst they ‘investigated’! Many of his patients were on their knees again! But eventually the GMC had to concede that he was right. Fortunately he’d kept meticulous records. He wrote a book ‘B12 Deficiency in Clinical Practice’ available on Amazon. B12 deficiency is rampant & many are suffering as a result. B1 deficiency may also be involved. All the B vitamins are either directly or indirectly involved in both energy (ATP) production & Nervous System functioning. Neuropathy is a known symptom of B1 &/or B12 deficiencies. That may well have been an early warning symptom for you. I reversed my neuropathy by dumping highly refined, nutrient-stripped, nutrient-robbing wheat & sugar, adopting a natural whole food diet & adding supplements including those precious B vitamins, 15 years ago. It’s criminal that no doctors picked up on that for you. But then they didn’t for me either - I had to work it out for myself. I’m so sorry you’ve had to endure all this.

Definitely. I had scoliosis that no dr could diagnose. When I was 59 yrs old never diagnosed with all the mri’s and nerve tests and just ruined my life. Had surgery finally but now everything is really a mess with 2 lumbar cages and 7 bone fusions in my spine. Core muscles prolapse, problems walking upright, etc. just treat a symptom not the cause of the problem. Natural medicine is finally getting attention. People are seeking the truth instead of doing as we are totally programmed from birth.

Allithiamine is a natural form of B1 from garlic, I believe. Dr. Berg mentioned bizarre symptoms - coming from lack of B1 needed to metabolize carbs and some proteins, if I recall correctly. Alcoholics are known to be deficient in B1 and I’m certain this contributes to many health problems. I imagine dry drunk symptomology is due to alcoholics switching to candy instead of alcohol - still missing B1 due to sugar consumption. And then you can conclude that anyone who eats a lot of sugary foods or high carb diet might also be low in B1. Absolutely need to be off all sugar and carbs to get best results with or without B1 supplementation. Feelings of stress are gone although my workload is the same, no longer get angry at the smallest thing, feel connected more to others, feel more spiritual, and just so much calmer. Also need non fortified nutritional yeast with B1. I take 100 mg B1 as allithiamine 3-4 times a day whether I’m eating or not with 2-3 Tbsp of nutritional yeast a day. As I get better, I might need less B1 later.
