BJ stuck around a little too long, but like he said it's hard to let go, and it's like that for many athletes across all sports, but anyway, prime BJ Penn was a beast. You had to see him to believe it. He was a problem and it was a pleasure watching him during his best days

BJ in his prime is one of the top 5 fighters in any weight class all time in my opinion, I was lucky to watch his entire career, people can go back and watch the fights but it was a different feeling if you were witnessing it..He was the first real MMA Prodigy and he is one of the main reason mma is so hot today. Nothing but respect for BJ.

Super humble dude. I work out at his gym in Hilo all the time. Ive run into him on several occasions and you would never know he was a world famous athlete in his sport. Hes quick with a smile and never looks past anyone. The coaches in that gym are world class. Its an honor to have the opportunity to be able to train with these guys.

I have been watching MMA since TUF 1. BJ was the first guy I became a big fan of. Guys like him in the early days didnt really exist. A guy who would fight anyone, at any weight, in any organization. A fighter, but with the technical abilities of world class martial artists. Elite boxing when no one else really had it. Unreal on the ground with legs that he could use like arms locking people up. The craziest takedown defense where tanks like Matt Hughes would be lifting BJS heel to his own face, and still can't take him down as he's bouncing around with unreal balance and flexibility. GSP's coach studied BJ and found he had the fastest reaction time of anyone GSP ever fought. Super gifted, super talented and a real warrior. An all time great and arguably my favourite fighter ever. Miles ahead of his time at one point.

Bj wasn't the first but made Pacific Islanders around the world believe they could do it. Jiu-jitsu blew up in the pacific islands atleast in Micronesia and Bj was a big influence. I remember him coming out and supporting young up and comers at Jiu-jitsu tournaments and mma fights.

I remember when I trained a UFC fighter to improve his stand up back in 2008 in Arizona. He told me he had grappled with BJ previously and likened it to when you wrestled with your dad as a young boy...just pure old man strength

has been one of my favorites of all time for a long time, was hard to see some of those losses at the end I always personally thought he lacked motivation between fights for getting in shape and pushing weight classes but I also loved him for his willingness to fight anyone.

Fighting ability aside, there was something special about him. I remember visiting my sister in Phili during the Florian fight. All the sports bars were filled to watch him fight. His entrance music would give me goosebumps every time, like I was walking to Octagon with him. For us in Hawaii, he was our "local boy", our warrior, our champion.

You guys remember Penn in the clinch lifting his one leg putting it completely horizontal to defend knees to the body. 😭Dude was flexible as hell. He used to stand on one leg and defend takedowns.

I always loved BJ's personality as a person more than a fighter. He has a natural burn for competition and a lot of elite athletes have a hard time walking away. BJ is one of those guys. He had a hard time letting go. You could see it on his face the last few years if his career. But I always felt there was more to him than just fighting. Family is the thing for most people. Sidebar note: BJ Penn when he was at his best, was a ferocious barrage of punishment. A swarm with an uncanny ability to gain leverage and angles in every fight situation. The ref used to be a few shots too late with BJ. If he knocked you out with blows, it was repeated blows, lightning-fast right uppercuts with leverage, always good leverage. You can't tell how hard those shots are, but some of the uppercut knock outs, the opponent is out, and the ref can't get there in time. That's how fast BJ Penn was. Every fight legend must make a George Forman Grill type business. BJ Penn Hawaiian Burgers or something.
