One night I got really into the early 2000s emoticons, the "kaomojis" and went into a deep, deep hole researching them, this video is the culmination of that night.

I find it incredibly interesting that nowadays, younger folks (including myself) tend to prefer emoticons and avoid emojis. (It varies in different demographics, of course, but in the places I am, I mostly see emoticons.) I think it's just the simplicity of the look, which makes it look more appealing, as opposed to the many colours and variations of emojis. Emoticons also allow you to be creative with them and mix and match certain aspects, which is fun.

So happy you have included different cultures) Interesting additional fact: in cyrillic texts often brackets start to function as markers of punctuation, replacing dots and commas. So, they work as markers of punctuation that indicates mood) Interestingly, if you have too much of them)) in a texts) it means you're nervous)))) and you're trying to cover it with making text super "look how smiling and friendly I'm")))))) It's litteraly a textual version of smiling awkwardly and uncomfortably)))) and cyrillic keyboard is called yee-tsoo-Ken.

Dude, the way this was edited feels like a massive breath of fresh air! Everything has so much character and they move so swiftly and snappily; it's like video games and that flat-colored graphic design style in one package. Emoji were also present in Pictochat, the drawing and messaging client built into the Nintendo DS! They were the early cellphone type. I used to draw pictures with them when I was bored as a kid.

God your editing is literally insane. Emoticons have always been supreme. I remember having an emoticon list that showed all sorts of basic emoticons and how to use them ( :-) :-( :-O type guys). Great vid! One huge downside of emojis is that the different operating systems (or fonts I guess?) can hugely change their meaning. Look at the different ways that Apple and Android render their animals. They can change with software updates too… I’m an Apple user, and my favourite emoji used to have smiling eyes with gritted teeth, like the top half of 😊 with the bottom half of 😬. That conveys an emotion that is no longer available to me and it makes me sad

2:35 - Russians only use brackets if there is text before it, for example "hi)" if the message consists of a single emoticon, the probability that it will be with : is much higher. The message ")" will look very strange.....

Personally I still prefer to use emoticons over emojis. Kaomojis take so much more effort to use, but I love their charm. Great video :D

9:22 you will notice in the lower left corner of the japanese keyboard is a little emoticon face. This contained a dictionary of those very complicated japanese emoticons which used all kinds of special characters. I used to use this feature on my ipod touch in 2008, 2009 when emoji were not yet standardized across mobile devices, and many of my friends devices did not support emoji. Im not sure if it is still on the japanese keyboard on Apple devices, but i know it is not on android. (╭ರ_•́) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

It still is included in the apple japanese keyboard, I have one (Its located at the Z if you are using some keyboard) __(┐「ε:)__

gboard actually has an emoticon tab and even sub categories corresponding to what emotions they're supposed to portray (⁠ ⁠╹⁠▽⁠╹⁠ ⁠)
