Do you like to do Wrist locks? Have you ever smother choked a training partner? There are certain techniques and submission in BJJ that are considered the "Dark Arts!" For a long time ankle and leg locks were frowned upon as Dirty moves but as Jiu-Jitsu has evolved it is now popular to be proficient at these techniques. But then we move into a grey area - submissions that get the Tap but may hurt or upset your training partners. JT & Joey list moves they dislike and discuss what really makes a technique "Dirty" and what is actually just an effective submission, like it or not...

Unsure how "dirty" it is. However, I refuse to do any neck cranks on my partners. We all have work the next day and nobody needs someone yanking on their neck. I'll try something else.

Why not let go, if someone didn‘t tap? I don‘t get it, if its not a fight or a comp, Why hurt each other in training.

Rolling with white or blue belts I’ve let go of subs after holding them at the breaking point when they refuse to tap. Maybe they don’t know they’ll never walk the same… if higher belt is refusing to tap they for sure need to be retired or learn a hard lesson. They’re not helping anyone but their own ego. Same goes for for higher belts rolling with non competitors hitting submissions as quickly as they can leaving no opportunity for a tap before damage happens. The first is a natural consequence the latter would be retaliation

Brah. It's ok to let a sub go even if they don't tap.

Seriously, just move on, who cares. How casually he explains hurting some random dude, who probably didn’t know any better, is kinda scary.

It should be understood that smother chokes are totally valid to attempt, but you shouldn’t be surprised if people don’t like you, don’t go easy on you, and try dickish moves on you in retaliation.

It’s a tough subject. Even doing “clean” jiu jitsu can get you kicked out of gyms. It boils down the who and not the what in my opinion.

Wrist locks can be done slow and with control, not as effective but you know you could have done it fast Also aoki lock, and heel hooks . Nothing is dirty if it’s done slow and with control

Another great episode, I got wrist locked twice on the same night, first one from my professor and second one from a cranky blue belt that couldn’t choke me, I’m a two stripes white belt

Smother with belly(Mothers Milk in 10th Planet) is totally fine. Mount, bring up the arms to straight jacket, cook em until they tap. Works on white and blue belts. Purples dont tap to that.

Shouldn’t be injuring your training partners with wristlocks on purpose my guy. Even if he was being a knucklehead and not tapping in the triangle.

Your safety is your first priority. Tap before ego Simple There will be people you roll with who train with ego’s constantly. Don’t fall in to the trap of playing that game. Tap early, roll longer, less injuries

Sometimes you have Ego before Tap too..goes both ways! Some won’t even let go of subs even if you tap

The only dirty legal move isthe one you dont stop immediately after someone taps. That isnt a reputation thing. Thats a blood feud, full-on villain origin story.

If you are competing is fair game to use quick submissions, if you are training don’t be a dick and use quick submissions that would injure your training partners

Fist choke. Not really effective against higher belts, but great at making lower belts suffer....I have a super heavy choke game, so its hard to ignore the opportunity when it arises (which like wrist locks - seems to be every roll once you know it). But a dirty fist choke is really high on the lasting pain scale and really low on effectiveness. So great at pissing off your partners without learning new skills.

Why do you have to injure the people you train with? Makes no sense to me…I remember the first time I got injure(knee) all I could think of was payback when I heal up… Maybe if people stop injuring their training partners then their partners maybe won’t be thinking about revenge..this might become a circle and I think for the most part people quit BJJ because of the injuries they endure…some still have to work, take care of their kid, travel, other activities..injuries limit a person movement for pleasure and productivity

@@coachmiller202 it’s just a silly and weak opportunity imo and I just personally hate it. To my Neanderthal brain that has done like 6 different martial arts, fucking with the weakest complex joints (wrist and ankles) in competition is essentially akin to eye gouging or kicking the balls. Obviously this is fair game in self defense and should be taught, but let’s be honest we are mostly seeing these silly techniques in comp being done just to win medals. Frankly if you have to ban it for amateurs that should already be a sign that it’s a weak move.

@thetajc1329 I agree and understand not having white belts use these. But it is the top way JJ subs happen internationally. I felt the same way 15-20 years ago when it first became popular(effective). But it was a just a necessary change. I was old man "get off my lawn" guy at first. But I didn't understand it would be revolutionized and become the BEST way to submit and win in competition. Why aren't we attacking 50% of the body(legs)? Danaher quote. It is the way JJ is done and it is logical. Like all JJ moves and strategy, learn it. Learn how to defend it first off, then learn how to apply it. That's what I did. I was a slow pressure passing wrestling takedown style. Then when purple belt came leg locks, heel hooks, aoiki locks, became a whole new world do deal with. Got submitted for a year straight(I HATED leg lockers). Until I learned it and turned the tables.
@coachmiller202
@coachmiller202 5 ай бұрын
@tomjones6347 the consequences are only severe when you don't know the moves and strategy. Or are not teaching it properly. Leg locks, foot locks, and heels are taught so well now(10P and B Team are probably the best and safest at teaching them) that we need MORE teaching, seminars, and rolling with it to make it even safer.
