What's your favourite submission? Maybe you have more than one? This might change if you train in the Gi vs No-Gi but certain attacks work for both. Some are more technical than others but what's more effective? JT & Joey have worked their way through the list and discuss what has worked best for them. These 3 techniques can work for anyone from either top or bottom position, from beginner to Blackbelt. All these submissions will work for you and are easy to fit into your game no matter what style of grappling you do.

Watching you guys try to figure out the difference between a strangle and a choke was the best part lol. A strangle attacks blood flow. Choke attacks air supply. In jits ideally it's always a strangle so choke is just less than accurate and Danaher is a scholar

Choking happens from inside the throat like food debris, strangling occurs outside the throat.

My coach has said many times that the top 3 we need to master are the guillotine, triangle, and RNC. I suspect it's because of such a wide application of them. You've got a sub from Standing/Top (guillotine), from Bottom (triangle), and from the Back (RNC). And they all work in gi, nogi, and self defense. Then again, I'm just a dumbass white belt, so I could be WAY off the mark here.

Armbars are personally last on my list unless it's a competition setting as a last ditch effort. In Training, everyone sees it coming from a mile away and unless you're injuring partners left and right and falling back on them, there's a certain amount of committment involved in it to catch someone off guard. From a guard if it fails you risk getting your guard passed and from the top if it fails you usually end up in a worse position ie: if it fails from top side control you either end up on your weaker side control side or you lose side control and if it fails from mount you end up on bottom in a guard position. That paired with the fact that they're so easy to escape with the hitchhiker, RNC grip, Stack etc makes it such a gamble in my eyes. There's definitely armbar specialists who have mastered the sub, but there are just so many better attacks/position advancements i'd consider before committing to an armbar.

My top 3 submission list is less about what submissions I am good at, and a lot more about what positions I am good at getting to and holding on to. I am a former wrestler and I discovered very early that I can hold people in north/south for days, so a good chunk of my submission game comes from there. (North/south choke, D'arce choke, and several Kimura variations) I can almost always get to the back, but I still suck at holding on to back control against anyone good at escaping it, so it is a real victory when I sub a blue belt from back control. As a matter of fact, the only time I have tapped any of the black belts at my gym (and it's only been once!) was when he went all out for 90 seconds to escape my north/south, and when he finally gassed he had nothing left to stop my paper cutter.

2:45 we have a couple guys that just won't tap to legs. I'll put on a toe hold have it perfect to were it stops moving and if I'd go any further it'd break or tear something so I'll transition to something else same with heal hooks same guy. I'll tell after the roll that he need to tap those because some won't let it go,. he usually just shrugs. White belt college wrestler😂

I'd trade the arm bar for a triangle, failing an arm bar can you in a less advantageous position vs a failed triangle.

The chances of you getting on a lions back are low but if you get there I think you could put it to sleep, the lion wouldn’t be able to bite or scratch you

1) Cats are boneless. I think it would be able to exorcist it's neck around and bite you. 2) An adult lion weighs like 300-500lb while being lean and probably a better than human strength to weight ratio. I'm not saying there's no adcc champs that couldn't choke out a 600lb version of Bryan Shaw but it sure as hell isn't me. 3) everyone knows that you catch tigers (and presumably lions) by the toe hold

You might be trying to lock the figure 4 before you've secured the position. You need to breakdown your partner and get that far arm/shoulder folded in before shooting in for the lock

It's possible but definitely harder for short limb folks. Definitely keep working on your technique but maybe look at some options from there that give you alternatives if it does work.
