BJJ knee injuries are like purple belts who skip warm ups - they're extremely common.
Jess is an Australian blue belt. She's also a mother of two and full time police officer. She ruptured her ACL back in 2021 and had the surgery that same year. Having been through the same thing myself about a year earlier, I had some knowledge to share with Jess.
Returning to BJJ after a knee injury is tough.
It's a whole journey that many BJJ players will go through. Returning after surgery is another journey in itself and one that's often not spoken about. I hope this chat with Jess can shine some light on the journey for you.
In this chat we talk about:
- The mental effect of returning to BJJ after being injured
- How strength and mobility only form part of the recovery equation
- The thing no one tells you about: rebuilding coordination
- How to adapt your BJJ style to suit a knee that doesn't work so well
If you're dealing with a knee injury yourself, or have had surgery, I hope you get a lot out of this chat. I guess the one good thing is - you're not alone : )
