BJJ knee injuries are like purple belts who skip warm ups - they're extremely common.
Jess is an Australian blue belt. She's also a mother of two and full time police officer. She ruptured her ACL back in 2021 and had the surgery that same year. Having been through the same thing myself about a year earlier, I had some knowledge to share with Jess.
Returning to BJJ after a knee injury is tough.
It's a whole journey that many BJJ players will go through. Returning after surgery is another journey in itself and one that's often not spoken about. I hope this chat with Jess can shine some light on the journey for you.
In this chat we talk about:
- The mental effect of returning to BJJ after being injured
- How strength and mobility only form part of the recovery equation
- The thing no one tells you about: rebuilding coordination
- How to adapt your BJJ style to suit a knee that doesn't work so well
If you're dealing with a knee injury yourself, or have had surgery, I hope you get a lot out of this chat. I guess the one good thing is - you're not alone : )

Nice chat! I'm 2 weeks post-op from ACL recon & meniscus repair. 45 yr old purple belt. Was out 3+ months prior from ilingual hernia tear & surgery before rolling into the ACL so the mental hit of not training for at least a year has been brutal. I'm still in denial, focusing on my physio and home workout plan for week 3 when I found your video. We are not alone... 🤙🏽

Injuries can be a real hurdle huh! Thanks for sharing. Sounds like an unideal run for you. But this road is long, so there's no rush. We are certainly not alone : )

I am 3 weeks post ACL reco & tendonesis. In addition, I had another surgery (one week ago) due to a blood clot causing an opening surgical wound and risk of infection. THIS CONVO WAS VERY INSIGHTFUL AND HELPFUL. THANK YOU BOTH.

Thank you for this video! 5 months post op. Been going to class to watch during recovery. BJJ white belt. Been focused on strength and conditioning. Lately been thinking about doing light training 1 day a week. While I wait for the 9 month mark. Still drop in to watch 2 days. This video helps and gives me things to consider. Thank you!

Thanks really appreciate that. Realising that we all have a common shared journey like pain, eagerness, treatment teams who potentially don’t fully appreciate BBJ movement. The comparing game etc 👊🏼

I’ve been thinkin/WANTING to train BJJ so bad ever since I had both of my knees reconstructed.. right knee in 2019 meniscus and acl reconstruction and 2021 I had my left knee acl fixed after being tore for 14 years.. any advice besides what’s in this video? Thanks for the video btw.. I think I’m goin to give it a try. I believe my want to will outweigh my fear of my knees being hurt but it’s always in the back of my mind..

hey trey trey, I feel your pain. The best advice I can give is to get your strength and flexibility into the greatest shape you can before jumping back on the mats. You will never rule out injury, but doing everything you can in the gym first is the greatest measure you can take to reduce the chances.

Bro I’m just telling u know do boxing or Muaythai. Bjj religious won’t admit how dangerous their sport is in terms of Injuries. It’s not if you’ll get hurt it’s when. You already got a injury with ur knees save urself the trouble bjj will ruin ur knees again

@onewithnature8435 Nah I quit. have done this for 3 years and got a neck injury 1 week ago. Im going back to natural bodybuilding a cut, bruise, broken bone is better than join and tendon injuries that can affect you for life. this shtt isnt worth it. but I respect mma and all athletes in this sport. I will miss it

@onewithnature8435 nah Im done with this shtt. Im healing from a neck injury and my knee injury stopped healing at 80% so it may be chronic. neck is in constant pain and I have stabbing pains when I try to lay down but I hope it will dwindle as time goes by. BJJ/wrestling is fun but you have to ask yourself if long term pain is worth the 10-20 minutes of fun a few times a week

@@Shri100percent I did boxing for 5 years and am now looking to starting Muaythai. All those years no major injuries. I did bjj for a few months popped toe because a white belt fell on my foot. Busted lips and dislocated my knee in no gi by a purple belt after a white belt injured me. Rolled with a purple belt thinking yeah I’m going to get smoked but I’ll be safe because They know what their doing but nvm that took me off the mats for 6 months . Grappling is more dangerous then striking sports more risk. At least for me
