@@richardsellers8671 The main efficiency improvement comes from changing to Synchronous Permanent Magnet (PM) motors instead of Induction Motors. Tesla eked out a few percent extra efficiency on their *Induction Motors* on the Model S through their _material_ choices (e.g. incorporating copper in place of aluminium). Elon Musk and friends do not have some magic motor sauce! 🤣 With an induction motor, some of your energy goes towards inducing a magnetic field in the rotor. However, Induction motors are *legendary* for their for their durability, (which is why they make up at least 80% of the motors used in industrial production). With a Synchronous PM motor, you don't have these loses, because there are magnets on the rotor producing a magnetic field there already. Approximately 98% of todays generators are Synchronous motors (although in that use-case, they usually have an external DC source to allow load optimisation by changing the field strength at the rotor). A typical indiction motor is about 85% efficient. A typical synchronous motor is at least 95% efficient (and modern generators are in excess of 98% efficient).

Rather have the Jaguar i Pace than the Audi, it’s more efficient and better looking, in 18-19 degrees I am getting approx 220 miles (356km) out of my Jaguar i Pace - First Edition Model with 22”” wheels, it’s a great car but I have decided to go back to a Tesla Model S (Which I had before) simply because the UK charging network is rubbish and simply too slow at charging, especially important when doing long distance. The Tesla was as easy as owing a petrol car, very very easy to travel large distance and very fast charging - stress free! Until the UK has a proper fast charging network, the other car brands simply cannot compete with Tesla, it’s simply too stressful, slow and complicated using the UK’s erratic charging systems when traveling larger distances - pity because I prefer my Jag over the Tesla as a car - anyway the Jag is going up for sale :(

@14:00 I also thought e tron uses PM motors, but it uses 2 induction motors, with the front one smaller than the rear, similar to original Model X. Perhaps they should have uses a PM front motor with Silicon Carbide front inverter like the model S/X refresh does, because the e tron is expensive.
@hectorandem2944
@hectorandem2944 5 жыл бұрын
The main advantage of silicon carbide IGBTs is when you want to accelerate (retains better current-carrying capability at higher temperatures). The main _efficiency_ savings actually come from the _type_ of motor used. If they went with Synchronous Permanent Magnet motors from the start, an efficiency gain of about 10% would not be unreasonable. The e-Tron doesn't strike me as the type of car that's angling to drop X5s and Range Rovers at the lights (even if it can 🤷), so I think switching to an SiC-based inverter would just add cost for not too much benefit vs changing the type of motor used. As you said, it's _already_ expensive.
@imho7250
@imho7250 5 жыл бұрын
Hector Andem, the SiC inverter is more efficient even at low current, which is why Tesla is using it with the front motor on the new S/X. The PM motor is more efficient, but combined SiC inverter its 94% efficient. It might not be cost effective for those few extra percent gained for the SiC inverter, but Toyota was developing it for their hybrids back in 2014. Not sure if any of their production vehicles use them or not.

Did a test on the same stretch of road with my E-tron today. - 21" wheels with 3.0/3.2 bar. - Outside temp was between 20-21°C. - 20km/h wind from the south (according to the cars weather app). - Efficiency mode. - AC on ECO at 21°C. - Alone in the car. Drove from Shell Ås and turned around at Sarpsborg Hospital, exactly 100km round trip. First run I set the ACC at 93km/t with maximum distance to the car in front, second run same settings but at 123km/h (equal to 90 and 120km/h at GPS). Result @ 90km/h: Ø20,7kWh/100km. Result @ 120km/h: Ø27,5kWh/100km. What could be the reason for the different result compared to Bjørns test? Does not look like the wind was any stronger on the day he did his test. I have driven the car close to 7000km now. Looks like the car Bjørn tested had only done 5-600km when he started the test? Could this have any impact on the consumption?

@@bjornnyland Thanks Bjorn, it is interesting that having 2 motors only makes the etron 0.5 sec faster 0-100. Yes it is an advantage having AWD in locations where traction is an issue. Here in Straya, mostly that is not an issue for road driving. For example where I live the winter minimum temperature rarely goes below 5C and summer minimums 15 -20. It never snows. Winter tyres, at least on the West Coast of Straya, are not a thing.

I think the points you made about permanent magnet electric motors always being on compared to induction motors being able to be switched off and just "free wheel" was an important difference between the e-tron and the Model X. In the Model X when cruising at 90-120kph only the front motor is being used and that would improve efficiency.

I've found a good video from Audi on it at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZmSe8tpprO3iY0.html Apart from weight (Bjorn found about 2800kg on a weigh bridge) and aerodynamics, I wonder what other reasons account for the relatively high energy consumption. I know it only matters if you do a long trip.
@domcroatian4044
@domcroatian4044 5 жыл бұрын
Bjorn, your idea about permanent magnet motors not being able to switch off is probably wrong. Afaik they use permanent magnet only on one pole (stator OR rotor), so current through other pole determines magnetic induction. Permanent magnet motors are more efficient since one pole doesn’t need current. Another thing: I have tested my Jaguar I-pace on 90 and 130 (22” wheels, in comfort mode). It is slightly more efficient than e-tron.

And I don't think this test can be classified as a true Norwegian summer test - according to official data the typical summer temperature in Oslo is 22.3C (this test was 14-19) 😁. The dash screen is very reflective. Why it doesn't have any side covers? Efficiency should matter for many people because the driving cost depends on it. If you can charge a Model X and an e-tron for the same price, MX will be cheaper because it will drive 15-30% more. And in some cases that can make the e-tron more expensive than an ICE car.

Bjorn: what kind of tires does your Telsa Model X and the e-tron used? Are they low rolling resistance tires? I don't have data, but I felt the e-tron has a higher drag coefficient than the Model X. Finally is it true that Model X has an suspension system that can lower the body at highway speed, which will significantly reduce drag. Does e-tron have a similar feature?
@danczer1
@danczer1 5 жыл бұрын
It has the drive select mode so yes. It changes the height. But maybe it won't go as low as tesla. The lower you get the suspension will be harder. And if you are in confort mode you don't want the feel every bump. Even if your consumption is higher. It is not black and white. People compare the consumption to tesla, but it is only one spec. You should drive e-tron for 1000km then drive the model x and then you can decide which has better driving experience.

Hello Bjorn, I think you are wrong, the e-tron have asynchronous motors, not permanent magnet motors.... "The electric drive motors in the Audi e-tron are asynchronous. The main components of each electric drive motor are the stator with its three copper windings (U, V, W), which are 120° apart, and the rotor (an aluminium cage rotor). The rotor transmits the rotational movement to the transmission unit. The air gap between the stationary stator and the rotating rotor is very small in order to achieve a high power density. The electric drive motor and the transmission are combined in a single axle drive unit. There are two different versions of the axle drive. The difference relates to the axial orientation of the motors. A parallel-axis electric drive motor (APA250) drives the wheels on the front axle. A coaxial electric drive motor (AKA320) performs this task on the rear axle. Each of the three-phase drives on the front and rear axles is connected to the body via a potential equalisation line"

Nobody: Me: hold up, I can make a tenuously relevant point on the internet TL;DR: the consumption will increase by about 3/4 * ((wind speed)/(vehicle speed))^2 for a realistic trip that finishes back where it started. Though of course the wind is anything but constant in strength so YMMV... A "there and back" route doesn't cancel out the wind's effect because air resistance goes as the square of (vehicle speed v + wind speed w). Energy consumption = force times distance, so to compare the two cases (when air resistance dominates) we have (v+w)^2+(v-w)^2 = 2v^2 + 2w^2 compared to 2v^2 with no wind. So the fractional extra consumption = (w/v)^2. In a 90 km/h test with 30 km/h head/tail wind, this comes to an increase of 11%, which isn't negligible. The impact of wind is smallest on a return trip with a sidewind, in which case the increase is 5% at w/v=0.33. If you drive in something approximating a circle, then (by integration) it's around a 7% consumption increase for w/v=0.33. Plotting various angles of there-and-back trips, and a circle, for various wind speeds, it turns out that a circle is very close to a 45-degrees-to-the-wind trip (no big surprise) and to about 3/4 of the simplest head/tail-wind case. Since no road is straight, and the wind direction varies, this is probably a semi-acceptable rule of thumb even in a there-and-back test like this. You don't say anything about the costs...what happens when the batteries worn out? In a diesel if the turbo goes out then you replace the turbo, in a reg engine a pipe bursts you replace the pipe which is not too much trouble but when the batteries for this E tron worn out then what? What would be the cost? How long these batteries run for before they go bust? 2 years? 3 years?

Ole, the Audi drag coefficient is 0.28, the Tesla's is 0.24, with the frontal area slightly bigger for the etron. So if their consumption numbers are within a few percent of each other, that can only confirm that the Audi drivetrain is actually more efficient than the Tesla's... I doubt the rolling resistance is any different.

I think the southern route is more flat than the northern route so the effiency will be better, than on the ordinary northern route. The temperature will also be higher and the route have fewer bends. I think the brown leather seats looks awful, typical german bad taste.

Just goes to show that EV battery evolution and motor efficiency is required urgently to make these vehicles appeal to the masses. It will happen its just that its still very early days. 1000Km per charge will one day happen within the next 5 years by someone. Remember the first mobile phones efficiency was poor and so were the features well same here for EV's Li-ion needs an upgrade to the next level and with a 20 year lifespan.

I cant decide which is more disappointing.. The low-efficiency/mid low range of the expensive E-tron, Or the ignorance of Nissan releasing EVs without battery thermal management. smh. Its like the Chev Bolt Ev horrendous unbearable front seats and the Mitsubishi phev unfixed battery problems. etc, etc, See where I'm going with this? Conscious "designed to fail" attitude by some fossil fuel carmakers!? Disappointing result from an $80k+ vehicle.

I haven't test driven e-Niro yet, so maybe (hopefully) it's a few levels above the Hyundais that for me feel (materials used) and sound (road noise) absolutely rubbish. In addition to this, the Hyundais are terrible at highway speeds, and it's 64kwh battery is no match even for the smallest Model 3 battery (50kwh).
