Black 5 44932 Heads Day 1 of The Great Britain XV. Sat. 15th April 2023

If Only!!!.......
If only: 35018 British India Line had made the start line!
If only: a lone Black 5 could climb Tigley and Rattery Banks at that speed unaided!!
Circumstances confined my filming to this one shot of 44932 climbing Rattery Bank with regulator wide open, although a boisterous 47802 on the rear made the speed just a little too high! The fantastic weather conditions, visibility and exhaust sounds however were a huge compensation, with the gleaming Black 5 sparkling through the Devonshire countryside in all its Spring glory.

Oh, the memories of being a child, sitting with all boy cousins after school with legs dangling over the footbridge (Macclesfield, LMS - Loose ‘em, Mix ‘em and Smash ‘em) and the constant very dirty, smoky socks that were the despair of my poor mum. Here I am, at 72 yrs old, stills idolising the mighty Black 5. Thank you

Fantastic Alan , 44932 did well I’d say especially with the load although to be expected that the 47 would help on the steep climb.

I once complained like that in a similar situation on the Llangollen Railway. My Dad and I found we were too late for a ride behind the 9F named Black Prince, who was on loan from Peak Rail, if I remember right. We can't always get what we want.

Shame 35018 wasn't on the BIL🥱🥱 !!! but always got ears for a Black 5. She made good work of Rattery (I wasn't watching the diesel fumes!!) Thanks Alan for your time and trouble as usual, short, sharp and to the point; nice day for it!!! Cheers👍👍👍
