Popular historic dramas like Bridgerton, Little Dorrit and year of the Rabbit sometimes receive criticism that their diverse casts are historically inaccurate. But in fact there have been people of color in Britain since Roman times. In a previous video, I explored the lives of 7 fascinating black Aristocrats & Celebrities who were living in 18th century England and France. Today we’ll travel forward in time and meet 7 more compelling people of African and mixed heritage who were making waves in Britain during the Victorian era. They include the Queen’s own goddaughter and her royal ward, a renowned actor, a heroic nurse, a circus performer immortalized by the Beatles, one of the most visible models of the era and a best-selling composer. I love this channel I love her voice and I would love to go on her many trips she goes on. Sarah Rector would make a great story. Her father was enslaved, she was given land in Oklahoma. They found oil on her land and she became so insanely wealthy that even though she was black and indigenous, her race was legally changed to white.

@doreensika837 But her guardian didn't screw her over like most other ones. Wealthy BIPOCs were often assigned white "guardians" to manage their money for them. They'd usually just spend the money on themselves. But TJ Porter actually looked out for Sarah's interests, and she was a multi millionaire by the time she was 18.

I know, at least she went on the field and was loved by the men she helped and saved - they had a subscription to help her as she spent all her money to help the men. I always think she was related to me because she married a Campbell, but I can't confirm it. Whatever, she should be more celebrated for her great work, dedication and kindness, as the men who knew of her realised and acknowledged

I have never heard of Mary Seacole before today and now I can only ask, Florence WHO?? That lady discriminated against Mother Seacole due to her race, and then made a show of donating to Mary's poverty fund once they had returned home. This woman should be a cultural icon! I am always going to bring her up at every opportunity now!

Gonna say this once and for all for anyone whining about "historical inaccuracy" (esp w/ a diverse cast): UNLESS A FILM MARKETS ITSELF AS AIMING FOR HISTORICAL ACCURACY/MAKES THAT THEIR GOAL - they can do whatever they want with their characters. Also hi Ms. Holiday, I love your content and it inspired me to pursue my major in History, as well as my minor in education.

Yup! When people are complaining about "historical accuracy" when it comes to the skintone of elves, dwarves, hobbits and mermaids....... you know their problem is nothing to do with actual history. All "historical drama" is essentially fantasy especially if the source is fiction, and IMO there is zero justification for excluding an entire group of actors from genre roles based solely on their skintone.

Agreed. A common complaint these days "Why are Romans/vikings/greeks black...it's not historical!" If we're going for we should be asking why are they always talking with British accents? People hate having their biases questioned though. 😊

I both agree and disagree. Multiple skin tones, sure. Bringing in other cultures and melding them in, refreshing. Using lazy tropes with historically sexist ideals and showing a complete misunderstanding of the costumery... I'm out. You can't even tight lace stays! What would the point be in that silhouette? Empire gown have historical evidence of looking amazing on larger women. Why are they doing the fat girl dirty with how short they have her top cut?! I do agree though, anyone who doesn't like bridgerton because its diversity is being an idiot. There are tons of other things to hate.

@@babyramses5066I see what you are saying but when you replace an actual historical figure even in a historical drama with another race. That’s what people have problems with. If it’s in a purely historical drama that doesn’t use actual historical individuals and replace whatever race they are with another. People would be more open if not then yeah it’s purely showing whatever hatred they have for said race.

It's nice how some of these families who suddenly had Black children or grandchildren they never expected to have, they were still pleasant to them. Like, a white British 1800s Grandpa sharing his passion for music with his illegitimate Black grandson is just nice. Sometimes it takes a reminder that there's always been decent people around.

Love your videos Lindsay. Just wanted to add that historically Yoruba was, and still is a tribe and language, not a place or village. So Sarah was not “born in Yoruba”, she was born in Oke Odan, which was one of the many Yoruba speaking villages/lands that existed. Additionally, saying at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="235">3:55</a> that “His parents were also from Yoruba” is also incorrect.

Yoruba are not they one of the missing Tribes of Israel. There is a video done last year, where a Jewish Rabbi officially said they are the ancient Hebrews. The Yoruba were not asking for his permission 😅. They know their history or are at present now learning who they truly are.

Loved this, can't wait to see more. Have you considered videos on disabled historical figures, that would be a lot of fun too. Benjamin Lay was a Dwarf who fought slavery in America and lived in a cave in protest of slavery. Just a thought if your trying to think of a new subject after this. Definitely want more black history first tho 🎉

Teacher here, I will be passing this video and the previous one on the 17th century to my history coordinator, UK black history month is in October and the Victorian’s are a big part of primary school curriculum. This will be invaluable.

Mary Seacole has been on the Key Stage 2 curriculum in English schools for at least the last 20 years - she is covered at the same time as Florence Nightingale - retired history teacher in England.

Let's be real...this aspect of black history is not taught in liberal democratic led states or cities either. I reside in liberal loving CT and the only people talked about in our schools are Martin Luther King, Jr and Rosa Parks, and of course slavery. So please stop capping thinking that Republicans are stopping this type of information from getting taught. Schools systems had years to teach this information if they really want to.

Blacks has ALWAYS ruled Europe ! They ruled up until the year 1848, they were the kings and Queens. Queen Victoria was the daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent and Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Her father was the fourth son of King George III and his MOORISH NEGRO consort (wife) Sophia Charlotte. Black Queen adopted the black girl as her goddaughter, just as simple as that. This little girl might have been a European Sephardic Jews. Why would she be born and grown in Africa and speak English so fluently?

My relative Jacob Jenkins Roberts, was a weathy man from the Roberts family of Virgina, a free black family spread out from Norfolk to Williamsburg to St. Petersburg. He was a part of the movement to bring Black slaves back to Africa (the outcome is controversial). This ended up in the creation of Liberia. He is the namesake of the Airport and he was the first president - an American - of Liberia. His wife, Jane, also from a free black family and from Virginia, lived her later years in London, after his death. She is buried in Highgate Cemetary in London.

Why is it that whenever Mary Seacole is mentioned there are always people in the comments section insulting and lying about the incredible Florence Nightingale? It's as if there couldn't possibly be two amazing women at the same time.

I think it is because they wrongfully associate Nightingale with the organization that rejected Seacole because of her race. It is true that the organization has discriminated against Seacole, it isn't Nightingale's fault that her peers are jerks.

Actually, I'm a retired history teacher in English schools - Mary Seacole is remembered for the work she did in looking after soldiers in the Crimean War - there is a statue of her outside St Thomas's hospital in London, commemorating her contribution to that cause. And her story is part of the Key Stage 2 History National Curriculum in England - all children learn about her at the same time as they learn about Florence Nightingale. However, Florence Nightingale is not only remembered for her work at the hospital in Scutari - she was a lifelong campaigner in the realm of public health and sanitation. Apart from founding the first professional nursing schools, she also produced intricate statistical reports for a number of government committees that she sat on, which resulted in major public health policies for the whole country - this was a major achievement for a woman in those misogynistic times, when women weren't even allowed to vote, never mind be a part of government. I didn't know Florence Nightingale, obviously, and can't comment whether she was racist or not, but Mary Seacole does nothing but praise her in her autobiography, which she wrote a few years after her return from the Crimea. She talks about the help, material and financial she gave her on her journey in the Crimea.

Hi Lindsay. Love your videos. Thank you for including not 1, but 2, prominent Yoruba people, both royalty, as some sources say Aina and her husband were children of Chiefs or Kings. However, I should inform you that as you said in <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="70">1:10</a>, Yoruba isn't a place. It's actually a people, made up of different subgroups and ethnicities. Oke-Odan as you mentioned is her birth home is probably an earlier form of Eba- Odan, which later became Ibadan, capital city of Oyo State. Which means she was probably a princess of the Oyo Empire. There was no place called Yoruba. We are a people, and not a place. Keep doing what you do😊 can't wait for next week's video
