Only 7 months later than it should have arrived, my Prospero X1 bitcoin miner has finally turned up. Time to take a look at what it is, what the user interface looks like and what's inside (including a look inside the power supply).
UPDATE - 13th SEPTEMBER 2016
A brief power cut caused the power supply to fail this morning. As it outputs 5 volts (up to 5A) and 12 volts (up to 11.7A) I could probably rig it to work with a PC power supply, but due to the mining difficulty these days it had taken 5 months and 500 kilowatt-hours (about £54) to mine just 0.04BTC so it's not worth fixing.
Total payout from mining pool: 0.64239105BTC
Total mining time: 752 days or 18048 hours
Total energy consumption: 2130kWh (approx. £228 at today's prices)

That "KXG" text on the res cap is not the brand, it's the series. The brand is the shield mark to the left of the KXG (it's United Chemi-Con). United Chemi-Con KXG series are rated 10000 hrs @ 105degC. Datasheet: www.straschu.de/ie-shop/out/pictures/0/BPKE_ELKO/NCC-KXG.pdf

Seems like that company scammed you, essentially getting people to prefund the production of products that they can then use the miners to make additional money, and then sell the items when they are no longer generating much money. With devices like that, if kept in a clean room, there can be pretty much no signs of use. Keep in mind that from a business standpoint if these devices could really generate enough money to cover their own cost, then it would not be in the best interest of a business to sell them as 1, it will not pay as much as them using it them self, and 2, selling it would increase the mining speed of many others, thus leading to an even quicker increase in difficulty. Thus the main reasons why these will be sold, is make additional money after that have run their most of their useful life, or they never could generate enough bitcoin to offset their cost, and they are just being sold to people who they were able to trick, kinda like those people who are rich and sell get rich quick guides (which turned out to be the reason why they are rich (from selling the guides).

7 month's you should be so lucky, mine just shipped today about a year from purchase. The modular design is pretty cool, great review, i appreciate all the details. Hopefully we can get some of our investment back one way or another. maybe bitcoin will have a resurgence lol

It's a bit of a conundrum. Design wise it's brilliant. Company wise they're a bunch of fucking shysters who deserve a spot of jail time. Mining-wise it's a triangle: cost of power versus resulting bitcoins versus future value of bitcoins. You could mine £10 worth of bitcoin today using £15 worth of electricity, and that's a loss. But what if those bitcoins increase in value 10x? All of a sudden you've gone from £5 loss to £85 profit by doing nothing more than crossing your fingers. That's the way I'm playing it. If I lose, hey ho, it's not like I've just gambled my house away in a poker game. If I win, happy days!

Yeah I'm split right now, I have a batch of 10 on the way but not sure yet if I should mine on the chance of resurgence, sell to hopefully make back some of my money...or try a bit of both

The power supply is not too bad (I've seen much worse ones), the "rubber washer" is a heat conductive fiber glass reinforced film that provides electrical insulation (and they don't have to use thermal paste in combination with it), the capacitor is a United Chemi-Con capacitor with higher ripple current capability, a lifetime of 10,000 hours, and a temperature rating of +105°C Thumbs up :) Alex

That's a Nippon Chemi-con KXG capacitor (105 degree) and designed for high ripple. Pretty good if it is genuine

I finally got my two miners and I had to vent at minersource for the delay. I was batch one and it took at least a year to get mine. I don't blame minersource, but I blame BlackArrow.

Only limited experience, your best bet in my opinion would be the bitcointalk.org forum. If I was to buy now I'd probably be looking at the Antminer S3, but I don't have personal experience of them.

How much did you buy this for? Im new to bitmining and I'm choosing this as my first mining machine because it seems quite easy to setup. The one I'm looking at cost $150 USD. Is this a good idea?

Mine was pre-ordered in November 2013 for US $330.50 for delivery in January, which had Black Arrow delivered on time would've resulted in a pretty fast return on investment. As it is they're still shipping out those pre-orders with mining difficulty now 16x what it was in January. Probably worth looking at the Antminer stuff these days. Bitmain (who make them) seem to be one of the few miner manufacturers NOT out to screw people over. BFL and AMT have been proven to be shysters, Black Arrow aren't far behind. Definitely take a look at bitcointalk.org before you buy.

Wow thanks, I'll take a look at Antminer too then. I dont think I need to take The black Arrow Prospero x1 out of the equation though because the piece I'm looking at is already in my country, ready to ship from a private seller. Sorry my knowledge of bit mining and its currency is short from horrid

So, I'm wondering, have you had any success with this? It always seemed like it might be neat to set something up to run in the background if I had the spare cash for it, but I'd think you probably would have to go in not expecting to get anything. Seems like it's fairly late in the game to do this unless you have a massive network of miners to try and make a profit. It is a neat little bit of hardware, might be more worthwhile if you could hack it into a web server or NAS of some sort. I really like the removable power supply, reminds me of the redundant ones on my server.

+Jesse Levesque So far it's earned 0.5224 BTC. Had Black Arrow not been so useless it would've arrived sooner (when the mining difficulty was far lower) and earned much more.

Ah, so enough to pay the cost of itself off if you got a good deal, but definitely not the electricity, probably not worth it at all now. It is a shame they screwed up the delivery so much

They'd have been OK if BlackArrow had actually delivered on time. As it is it's a three-way gamble: cost of electricity versus current value of mined coins versus potential future value of mined coins. One way of looking at it: you spend $1000 to go on a holiday panning for gold and you find a nugget worth $200. If you sell the nugget now you've lost $800, but what's the nugget going to be worth if you hang onto it? Right now you might think the holiday wasn't worth the money, but in a few years' time when you find that the nugget's suddenly worth $2,000, all of a sudden that gold panning holiday was worth the money after all. I'm still running the miner because it's cheap to run, so far it's earned about 0.23 BTC and right now that's pretty shit, but we'll see.

AintBigAintClever i took the gamble, lost big time for now, unless the price goes up significantly my position is a bad one.

Thanks for the teardown and setup. Interesting stuff. That's like 1 bitcoin per year'ish. It could be run from solar to offset running costs. If you happen to have such a system.. *** Update:- there's 2 X1's in Wales!!. Could u comment on this, at 800Mhz (runs @ 40oC) I get a 0.0007% error rate over 60 mins (6 errors), at 1000Mhz (default / runs at 60oC), error shoots up to 5081 errors, still only 0.088%, hash gain is 59% - is that bad?? ***

If you started mining just a few hours ago (see user stats), then it may be lower than what your hashrate actually is. It's just informative, it doesn't have any impact on mining or your reward."
