I just stumbled onto your channel. I live in Bummerville, (yep) in Calaveras county, and sadly, the only time I've ever heard of Black Bart was on The Christmas story - until now. I drive thru Milton quite frequently. Thank you for the history lesson. Now when I go to Angel's Camp, it will have new meaning.

Having just traveled through Milton, I reflected on the story of Black Bart. There is another story of a Charles Bolton living in the Fallon Hotel in Columbia in 1880. He is said to have borrowed money from the wealthy in Sonora, CA and the mayor of Sonora, Jim Hughes, let him rent his newly rebuilt building (after the fire in 1877) which stills stands on Washington St. (Hwy 49). Charles Bolton opened a fine dining restaurant establishment in the downstairs named The New England. He established credit with businesses in San Francisco and had fresh oysters shipped in by stage twice weekly when in season. He even set up sack lunches for the passengers that took the stagecoach, leaving from the City Hotel (still standing) 5 doors down from the restaurant. Unfortunately, even with heavy local newspaper advertising, the restaurant went bankrupt. The court proceedings are documented in the Tuolumne County Courthouse and the signatures and dates match the timing of Charles/ C.E. Bolton's stays at the (now known as) Murphys Hotel. Was that man Black Bart? If you compare Charles Bowles Civil War discharge paper signature to his signature regarding his San Andreas court appearance and his signature in the hotel ledger... it certainly makes one wonder.

@ 5:53 The theme song to "Rawhide" is my favorite western song of all time! What great lyrics! That song pretty much rapped up the life of the true Cowboy. The first episode aired 15 day before I was born. I do remember watch the show on an old black and white tv before the show ended. Also to have a young Clint Eastwood in the show was a plus also. What a legend he became. 🤠👍

Also some local canyons and areas near mission San Antonio. Really enjoy your explanations. 👍

Wow, only recently discovered your channel here on KZfaq. Continue to be amazed by the small world of history that we share in my local area, I also have visited the Funk Hill site, but I came by boat across New Melones and hiked up the short stretch of the old stage coach road to get there. Many years ago I worked at a local tourist attraction, California Caverns. A side room not currently open to the public is called The Signature Room.... I discovered a name carved in the wall , " Charles Bolton", another AKA for Black Bart. Less than 5 feet away is also carved BK Thorne, one of the law enforcement officers who captured Black Bart and was the sheriff of Calaveras County during that time. The Historic Murphys Hotel has copies of the register pages with both of these men's signatures ... and there is a room named after Charles Bolton... aka " Black Bart".... enjoying your history lessons.... keep 'em coming....

I’d always been interested in Black Bart as it was often told he had hide-outs in the surrounding hills near Paso Robles, Ca.. I enjoyed the visit the ‘rock’ on the hill where he started and ‘finished’ his criminal career. I also like that you seem to have dropped the narrated by others in more recent videos. It really doesn’t add anything and I’m sure it may have been added costs. You’re much better narrating your own videos. I love it when you overlay “then” pictures or videos into the ‘Now’ scenes. It is very helpful to envision the setting.

Thank you for sharing your passion for history. I love it that you did something creative that you love and put it out for everyone to enjoy. I learned more about Black Bart, besides that he was the "gentleman robber." I particularly enjoyed your artistic use of historic photographs, posters, and film clips to help bring us back in time. Sarah is a great sidekick, but I was left uneasily wondering if she felt OK about being in the footage. The sound was clear and consistent, the picture quality was good, the transitions and use of captions all worked very well. I'm sure that was not luck. Well done! You could edit it a bit more tightly, but it was humorous and entertaining to have your search for the tombstone, driving around, mosquitoes, etc. I wouldn't cut them out, just make those parts a bit shorter while keeping them in the story. The background noise from driving was distracting; I'd recommend keeping those clips, just making them shorter. Please make another announcement when you publish your next episode!

Actually, the history being taught today has everything to do with the social climate of the state in which it’s being taught. There’s no uniform way for history studies as a whole. How do I know this? Both my wife and I were history majors in college, with my wife becoming a teacher. She retired from teaching because even in the somewhat conservative state of Texas, things are taking a very liberal swing as far as education is concerned. In addition, most of the people coming out of the university systems today have very limited knowledge of state and national history.

I have only read one book on the adventures of Black Bart after reading the book i really didn't know what to think but it was a good read ... On this mystery , you have your work cut out for you .. So many that knew BB or met the man in that era of time are no longer with us , makes it very confusing for what's accurate information ... I can't tell you why for certain but i have read more about Butch & The Sundance Kid with Wyatt Earp coming into second place... You may already know this but a few years ago ( I remember it on the news ) a team of experts went to dig up a grave site believed to be Butch but it wasn't Butch.. The real mystery is the woman who was with Butch & Sundance for some years , who board a train then boarded a steamer to return to the states then disappeared without a trace ?? Have you looked into the mystery of her? Rumors of one i read said she changed her name and was a school teacher up until her death.. But other writings said no it wasn't her.. Where are those three buried ? One other book i read said, Butch returned to the states and is buried here some place .. ? That would be a good mystery of history for both of you .. Just an idea ..thanks great video ..

Fun stuff! Sarah, however doesn't appear to enjoy history too much! I know what that's like! I leave my wife at home when I do things! When she does come along, I bring a shovel and a gun! She seems more exited to interact and pretend to have fun that way! Just a thought! 😜

How do you get to the robbery site with the rock ?
@jbenziggy
@jbenziggy 5 жыл бұрын
Hal Hunter It’s actually on private property and I only found out about it by putting some clues together. Google earth helped. The only thing I will tell you is that you have to get there by way of Appaloosa road and even then I don’t remember exactly how to get there.

@@jbenziggy I appreciate that very much and I could tell in your video it was private. I enjoy reading of his life and appreciate video showing me what I have only been able to mentally visualize up to now. Would you have any reference you could steer me to for the Wells Fargo Stage Route from Sonora to Milton? Thanks again Hal in Oakdale.

@@halhunter1974 I have not determined the stage route but I can tell you that I believe it went along Highway 49 to what is now the Tuttletown Recreation Area and down into the ravine where New Melones Reservoir is now. Reynold's Ferry was in the bottom of that canyon. It then snaked its way up on the other side of the lake, which is where Funk Hill is located. Some of the old stage route is visible. Some of the old-timers I talked to had never been to the robbery site because it's on private property but somebody placed a marker on it. It's an eerie place to visit.

🤔Is the host related to John Garfield, the famous NOIR film actor? The similarities are uncanny. 🎟Check out the film "He Ran All the Way" same haircut back then as today🎢
