At last I have a Discus aquascape I'm proud of having banished Black Beard Algae from my planted discus aquarium! I think this is the best discus aquascape i've ever had, and now that I've totally removed all the BBA it has never looked better. Find out how I removed black beard algae from my aquarium in 6 weeks with the help of some flying silver fox fish.

I think we can all find "perfect" tanks on youtube, but it's the ones that have some type of "issue" that eventually gets figured out and fixed that I appreciate the most. Thanks for sharing what did and din't works as well. It looks great, time to enjoy the fruits of you labor.

Thank you very much for this very informative video, I too have had the exact same issues in my tank and have purchased some flying fox earlier today prior to watching this video in the hope that they would assist with my problems with BBA. I am very grateful for your very in depth description of what you have done to achieve your goal. Your tanks looks stunning and has inspired me to keep going and defeat the dastardly BBA 😀

I had the same problem. It was everywhere. Even on gravel and believe it or not on my snails! I knew what caused it. I added 3 flying foxes (albeit hesitant since SAE are the ones you want) and within weeks gone. I actually like these guys. They will be a staple for me from now on. 👍

i broke a tank down years ago that had BBA, the wood in said tank was bone dry like it would be after a few years, when i placed it in a new tank, within 3 weeks i was getting tuffs of BBA on the wood again. all i could guess is that it somehow was inside the wood itself. i've removed the wood now, removed a few tuffs from the plastics and no sign of BBA now few weeks after. after that episode and the fighting of it in the orginal tank i think i'm on the side that says BBA is introduced with plants etc.

BBA has nothing to do with too much light or too many nutrients. The EI dosing system actually deliberately over doses on nutrients to keep plants healthy. Main causes are low or fluctuations in co2,poor maintenance (I do 75% waterchanges a week) and poor fertilization.
@AquariumAdventures
@AquariumAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Bold statement to say it has *nothing* to do with too much light or nutrients. This is a subject which encourages a lot of debate though - I'd agree there is nothing wrong with overdosing nutrients in line with large water changes, that low / fluctuating CO2 play their part and poor application of ferts is not helpful in any way
@avikbagh8391
@avikbagh8391 Ай бұрын
Did the BBA ever come back after this? I am guessing not, as the flying foxes must have dealt with it even if it tried to? The reason I am asking is, I am currently in a similar situation, but I am using SAEs to fight the BBA. Good to know that given enough time these fish might be able to completely get rid of it.

BBA is classic too much light/not enough CO2. Nothing to do with nutrients. Excess nutrients is very rarely ever the cause of algae issues in a planted tank. Glad youve got rid of it.

You can use sites like the "thinkfish community creator" or "aqadvisor" to build your stocking - but yeah i think its a bit too warm for panda cory, something like sterbai cory would be better
@AquariumAdventures
@AquariumAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Agree with Lee - Group of 6 discus minimum (you could probably fit in more). Sterbai cory like the warmer water, i've found bronze & Albino also do well though officially they prefer slightly cooler. Probably a 'no' for Pandas, and i've no experience with cherry barbs, sorry.

Now that their main food source is depleted I guess you will have the silver flying foxes get used to different food(s), but once they are used to different foods will they then still keep eating the algae? What is your view on this?
@AquariumAdventures
@AquariumAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Good question - they have already taken an interest in other food so I don't think that will be a problem, but will be interesting to see if the BBA comes back if they'll eat it. Make sure you're subscribed and I'll do an update in the future!
