This method did work, BUT it killed three of my mature Discus and a handful of cory cats. I didn't measure the amount I used but it seemed reasonable for a 90 gallon tank. If I ever decide to treat a tank with this method again, I'm going to remove all livestock and place them in another tank for a week. I would also recommend measuring out the amount you're putting in before spraying!

I have this problem as well. I do have a shrimp and sensitive fish so I decided to take a slightly different approach. Instead of spraying the plants in the tank. I took the affected plants and decor out. I also trimmed stuff like crypts and watersprite that are very sensitive to being moved or rooted. I then did the spray as you described it and left it for a few minutes in a large bowl (not submersed) to do it's thing. Then, I rinsed the plants and decor I sprayed off in tap water and put it back into the tank so that I would only kill the plants and not the fish. This was last night and today the algae has turned brown and is dying. Horray! One small victory. As a word of warning, Glutaraldehyde is used to fix cells (ie. it kills them dead, but preserves them) and is found at a concentration of 2.5% in Seachem Excel. I use this very similar mixture in my lab to fix cells and it only takes between 5 and 10 minutes when totally immersed. It does kill cells much faster however, so I'm hesitant at using it long term as I'm sure it would definitely kill my fish over time. It has a very similar action to formaldehyde / formalin, which is used to also fix cells and treat ich. You wouldn't want to keep repeatedly treating your fish for ich and you won't want to keep using Excel (in my opinion) on a daily basis as a result. I just found the composition out myself, so I think I will use the "spray approach" outside of the tank exclusively for now.

Long time watcher, 1st time commenting. Wow! I want to try this for sure! But, I want to do it right. How far down did you drain the tank? Did you spray lightly or to the point of run off? Then, let it sit for 15 minutes? This BBA has been a plague in my tank for nearly 2 years and I've damaged plants trying to be rid of it. I'll be glad to see it gone. Thanks so much for your video!

Ok, Thanks! I've got it so bad that it's even in the water uptake tubes. I've heard conflicting information about water changes and BBA. Some say more frequently and others say that the fresh water feeds the algae. What's your opinion? TIA, Cassie

OMG. I've been searching and searching and so glad that I found your video. It seems to be working on the comments. So just to make sure I'm doing everything correctly: 1. I have 10 tetras, 3 guppies, and some other small fish. Do I leave them in the tank or remove them? 2. I read some say to spray directly on the plants and some say don't, which should I do? 3. So remove about 60% of the water, spray, turn off the pump, and wait until the next day? Sorry I'm a newbie to aquascaping. My friend gave me 100 anubias and they instantly were attacked by BBA overnight but the other plants weren't. Very odd. Only the anubias had red and bba on it. Hoping this works.

If I take 40% of my 120 down. I don’t come close to getting my plants at the bottom that have bba so I can spray. So how do I treat the plants with it below the water level? Is there dosing that will work. Also how much do you spray for the plants exposed to air with 40% water out? What size was the peroxide bottle? Also I don’t dose CO2. I do daily automated water change of about 1.5 gal/day. Could this be the root cause of my bba infest? My flow is high and my lighting is high

I've done it a couple of times. Some pointers: 1 - Your shrimp will die. Trust me. 2 - If you have sensitive fish, they'll die too. I lost a blue ram and two fancy guppies. 3 - Some plants won't be able to make it. Examples: glosso, riccia, hemianthus cuba. 4 - Anubias, crips and dwarf hair grass, in my experience, are not affected at all. 5 - It does work. The algae disappears in two to three days and it takes a while before it comes back again.

Was this a once-and-done solution, or did you have to re-treat? I was looking into how to sterilize a set-up to be sure I get rid of the BBA, and this video gives me some hope that I can deal with the problem without starting over. One question- where did you find the spray nozzle that fits the H2O2 bottle? History: I had tiny bits of BBA in this tank; I bought the equipment, driftwood, and rocks from someone and the BBA was there more or less as soon as I started the tank. It wasn't problematic, though; I had beautiful plants and healthy fish-- until I had a filter failure during a heat wave, lost a couple fish, and spent six weeks re-stabilizing the nitrogen cycle. Most of the plants melted, and what was left couldn't outgrow the BBA. I had been told it was a sign of excess phosphate, so I tried phosguard, and the algae seemed to be dying at first, but so did the plants. I just set up a new tank for the fish to move into with all new equipment and some hardy plants from the tanks of friends that are "clean" to jump start the micro culture. As soon as this tank stabilizes the fish are moving, and I'm going to do whatever it takes to get the old tank back. It would be FAR preferable to not have to rip it down, toss the substrate and hardscaping, and sterilize the equipment, which was what I was assuming would be necessary!

I am a bit confused the BBA is all on my gravel in tank. Do I spray the peroxide in the water over the gravel? I thought that could kill my fish. Sorry for being stupid. I have about had enough of BBA it's making loose interest in keeping my fish as been having to change top of gravel every 3 to 4 months.

Fantastic, thanks. Question - how to prevent over-dosing? In an 80L tank the dose of Flourish is 10ml. Add 10ml peroxide and that's just 20ml of liquid to spray everything down. Seems like much more than that will be needed to cover everything. Thoughts? Thanks :)

Wait so you're running CO2 and still got blackbeard algae? So much for them saying that it's caused by low levels of CO2. I have a low tech set up with Cardinal shrimp, vampire shrimp, and bamboo shrimp. I have just started to get a little Blackbeard algae right by the outflow from my water filter. I'm thinking about spot treating with the glutoraldehyde and hydrogen peroxide mix you described here, or maybe getting some Siamese algae eaters. But I heard they can get pretty big. My tank is only a 20 gallon long. So I don't know if that is a good option. I want to try the spot treatment. But I don't want to risk killing these shrimp. What do you think I should do?

I followed this advice about a week ago, my ghost shrimp did not survive but my amano shrimp did. The plants have serious damage and I lost 100% of my jungle val, it all melted in days. My anubis, java ferns, and amazon swords have all taken a huge hit and lost more than 50% of the leaves. I am hoping they recover. The BBA is gone but so is my beautiful green tank. It will take a while to replace all of the plants I lost. This should be a LAST RESORT for a planted aquarium. It seemed to hit my slow growing plants the hardest.

can you just do a spot treatment instead of a water change? or water change is crucial for the process. For the mixture, for example, 100ml h2o2 + 100ml excel? I'm dealing with bba attach heavily in the driftwood, I remove it then after a week they comeback

@@MASSAquariums , this may be late but, I did remove like 10% of the water, and drain additional back to the sump like 10% again, until the bba is visible on the surface, I then spray the mix of 120ml h2o2 and 120ml of glutaraldehyde metricide28 on all affected areas, but less in the weeping moss and buceps. Before it was really tough to remove with toothbrush or tweezer, then after 15-30 minutes of dipping, the bba can easily be scraped off of, compared to without the spray. I say this is really effective and my tank is much greener now, even the blue-green, brown, and green hair algae can easily be scraped off or even using siphon. the Australian amano, neon tetra, and ebbr is not dead and eat after. but I'll monitor them for a week.
