Yeah I just sparred for the first time on my Muay Thai class (so I can't say how advanced were the people I sparred against, just that they for sure are more advanced than me) and I was more scared to be a dumbass and hit too hard than the actual fighting because all my oponents were very inviting and gave me good pointers.

I was scrolling looking for this comment. I didn't know how to say that that was the bit I was looking forward to the most without it seeming like I wanted to sound badass. In fact I think I got a bit more scared of it as I went up the belts and leg kicks started landing with a little conviction and even checks and blocks got hard. I also built up more fear of being seen as bad at it. As a white belt I didn't expect them to think I was good, later I was scared I wouldn't be good enough.

Same, I'm a white belt and only spar with higher belts (actually because I'm the only one). Can't explain how they try to make you improve, even with no words, just made me notice the things I should practice more and say what I do good (impressive)

When i started karate with my friends, we always huddled in the corner trying not to get hit. Somehow even the controlled sparring terrified us. 6 years later and a brown and white belt, i still flinched and my kiai wasn't much. Another 4 years, I'm seeing the first bits of white on my black belt, and freestyle is my favourite thing besides learning bunkai with visiting senseis! Seriously, watching ur usual sensei get folded, tossed, thrown, dropped, LITERALLY GETTING SPUN UPSIDE DOWN (if you're doing gi'on) and not being able to do anything about it because of a 70 year old 8th dan is something else...

Back when I was doing Tae Kwon Do they didn't let the white belts spar, but they told us that the most dangerous people in sparring were the yellow belts and the brown belts. Yellow belts because they didn't know what they were doing yet and were prone to accidents, brown belts because they had something to prove and got reckless.

I actually did sparring on my second class 😂 I was offered it and was like ok. Sure I dont know a lot but I know some jabs. I think its all based upon ones mindset on if they let fear determine what they will do. Like I know everyone Im training with at the moment can beat me in a fight, and thats ok. As a beginner I feel its the best to learn loss before you win. So theres no fear.

My sensei would make us do push-ups until fail, and this has always been my strong suit. As a punishment, my mother never hit me, but instead made me do 100 pushups. So when my sensei would do this, everyone would just stand around me while I did hundreds of pushups at a time and just wait for me to finish. The first time was hilarious for me.

Even as a white belt (karate+tkd)/sash (wushu), sparring was literally the most amazing part of the curriculum and easily my favorite part, and my pushups were always on point from first to last (i would only be robbing myself of gains) i still do kinda hate linework tho... Also my karate class was a mcdojo and it definitely taints my opinion of karate in general... Its just the most likley art to result in foot fencing and mcdojo bs from my experience. If i could afford to keep training id def do Muay Thai and BJJ. kyokushin karate has got my attention tho, i like how they spar.
