Black Canyon of the Yellowstone - Yellowstone National Park

This is a 14 mile round trip hike in the Black Canyon along the Yellowstone River. It starts at the Eagle campground above Gardiner Montana and the turnaround is at Knowles Falls. There is a lot of wildlife to see on this hike if you hike in a respectful way.

So. I wasn’t back and checked my calendars. Looks like western meadowlark. Mountain bluebirds and killdeers arrive first -second week. But. That data is at a lower altitude. But higher latitude. I think my data is back to post college life in Colorado. In the 70’s. I went to the YNP site this morning and just listened to sound scapes. I think that quiet in your videos is part of why I watch/listen. My heart just misses it so much.

@@StanMills you know. I spent my first night in Yellowstone on the night of the big quake. 1959. Big old canvas tent. Our family was fresh in from the Midwest. I was 8 years old. Cotton sleeping bags. I have been there over. And over. I don’t live so close now. But my other home is close. I recharge there. I think it is where I get my strength.

I tried to link the Bozeman news article on bear mortality. The Craigheads changed behavior. But time has passed. I wondered if you ever weigh in about this in videos. There is so much political fighting that goes on within the states involved and if you start pulling in more management teams it will just get nuttier. However, we as people who love wildlife as a gift have serious power when we unite with those with the guns. We all have to join to protect them. That requires folks like crazy old ladies in fancy houses in Jackson to NOT feed them. That means legal penalties. It is hard to live near bears and yet protect them. Sorry. I am ranting. Anyway it is a worthy discussion and you have a powerful platform. Thanks again and again for the quiet. I am so happy to watch every morning. And rewatch. Be well.

Nice hike Stan. The Black Canyon is on my long list of Yellowstone want-to-dos. I enjoy seeing the Park in your videos in seasons that I haven’t experienced for myself yet

Only on this trail there is no snow. This is normal for this trail.

Watched a few walks this morning. I love the park best in winter. When I often come. Even alone. To ski and snowshoe in. I know the park is between seasons. Most of my life has been between foothills of Denver to Wyoming to Montana. Now I am stationed on the ocean but come home monthly to recharge. Bluebirds should be arriving now. Keep posting.

Elisabeth, I have thought about it. I don't really call my drawings art. They are more about exact representation of wildlife but done with a mechanical pencil on a drawing pad connected to my computer. It is the end picture that I am after but the means of getting there does not matter to me. They are much more technical (drawing) in nature and take a huge amount of time to make. But yes, I may make a video about how I do it some time. Thanks

Remember there is still a lot of snow everywhere. This is the only trail to hike on without much snow right now. Plus most of the roads in the park are still closed.

William, don't let this hike mislead you. There is snowpack everywhere in the park but here. This is normal for this spot this time of year.

hey Stan, are those Mountain Lion or Wolf tracks (or both) ?

Small tracks are coyote, large tracks are wolf. There has been some melting so the claw marks are not very visible. But you always have to look closely at the interdigital pad - the big main pad of the foot. The interdigital pad clearly shows they are wolf tracks. Thanks

Your hike shows the variation in snowfall that can occur from one end of the park to the other.... my guess is there's significantly more snow in the central, southern and Northeastern part of the park, which is not all that uncommon. However, I could be wrong not knowing this year's snowfall totals?? Surprisingly, The Gardiner area itself can be quite arid. ... another great video....... very enjoyable.!

You are correct about the snowfall. This is the only place to actually hike on foot. There is much more snow pack everywhere else.

I think less than normal. But you can not measure by this video. This area is always like this around early March.

Thanks for not adding music to your video. While watching this, all I could think of is how much I'd love to fish in that stretch of the river. However, I'm too much of a chicken to make that hike by myself due to some of the wildlife present. I've visited YNP every year since 1992. I even fished the Yellowstone River last year on opening day with some success. When was this video captured? I don't see a lot of snow on the ground...

This was March 6, 2022. There is never much snow here at this time of year. You would have a great time fishing here (although I don’t know anything about fishing). I don’t think you would have to worry much about wildlife here because there will be a lot of people hiking this trail when the weather warms up.

So much beauty. Have you ever seen the wolverine? That would sure be quite a site. We live in Michigan which has been known as the wolverine state, but I've never seen one. You've sure lots of God handy work and thanks for sharing. Acts 2:38

I have not. Last year I though for sure I saw a wolverine from a distance. I was so sure, I sent a message to my wife on my satellite phone telling her I saw one. But when I got home and watched the video it turned out to be a small black bear running through deep snow. I have never spotted a live mountain lion either.

Stan, I’ve seen you post videos on this trail/area before and there always seems to be a lot of dead/eaten animals here. Are there a lot of wolves in this area?

I would think so although I have not spotted a wolf here but in this video I am showing wolf and coyote tracks from the start of the hike all the way to Knowles Falls. I always see their tracks but I think it is very hard for me to remain undetected while hiking in that canyon even while trying to hike like I do.

Does the trail from the Gardiner end have an easement through private property or is it all on public land?

I think it still is not allowed. You have to start at Eagle Campground.

Foreigner? You mean a non Native American? Regardless, he's doing the few thousand that watch his videos a huge favor by letting us experience the wonders of Montana and Wyoming without having to travel there. It's a long distance for many of us. Plus he needs tens of thousands more viewers before he's making any real money on these vids.

I didn't do ads but youTube started putting them on my videos anyway so I figured if they were going to do that then I may as well get paid for them. I wish they would not do that but this is their platform which allows us to display videos, so obviously they get to do what they want and we must follow the rules. I was almost making enough money to pay for a tank of gas to drive to Yellowstone; that was before these high gas prices. Thank you for your comments.
