A good mate of mine thinks this is one of the most underrated horror movies ever made. I'm completely with him on that. It came before Halloween and has a massive cult following. Black Christmas was 1974. Halloween was 1978. The beginning shot isn't the only one copied in Carpenter's movie either. It's a camera pan, rather than a montage, but this movie also had the ending shots of all of the places the killer had been accompanied by the sound of his voice (Michael's breathing in Halloween). This has to be my all time favorite slasher movie. Sorry, Mr. Carpenter, I love Halloween, but this one has you beat.

Keir Dullea from 2001: A Space Odyssey is pretty good in this too. And the SCTV cameos are great.

Kids today think that horror movies are about following a formula, showing as much graphic gore as possible and jump scares. It seems people don't know how to deal with ambiguity anymore. They need every last thing explained and resolved and if it's not, then they need a whole other movie just to give them backstory. I love that this film establishes some tropes while subverting expectations and that we never find out who Billy is or what his motivations are. It is scarier that way because if this were happening to you, you wouldn't have a backstory either. You'd just know that this twisted stranger is fucking with you and no amount of backstory will change the danger you're in.

Very influencial to the slasher genre. The 'first' slasher was Halloween so the slasher type movies that came before are considered 'proto-slasher'. Like this or texas chainsaw massacre or Bay of Blood by Mario Bava. If the opening seems like Halloween, it's not a coincidence as the opening shot of Halloween was a direct reference to this movie. As a matter of fact, the original script of Halloween was intended to be a sequel to this movie.

It’s called letting your imagination do the work it is a far more effective scare than showing too much. Billy is an escapee from an asylum which is mentioned at the start of the film and he killed the 13 year old girl. This was the first time the trope of the killer calling from the house was used in a major motion picture. Not showing the killers face was a way to keep the suspense up. Did you notice that the killer called after each killing? The call at the end was to let the audience know he got Jess - Who’s next?

Slashers... Peeping Tom and Psycho came out in 1960 and influence everybody who made horro movies including Italian director Mario Bava who has a movie called Twitch of the Death Nerve (1971?) which has that whole kill count / slasher thing going on before anything else did as far as I know. Bava is the father of the Giallo horror sub-genre which was mastered by another Italian director - Dario Argento - who’s 1975 film Profundo Rosso (Deep Red) is the best of the best. So Giallo was influence heavily by Hitchcock and Hitchcock was a little influence back by Giallo as is evident in his nastiest movie ever, Frenzy (1973?). Black Christmas, like TCM (1974) before it, has the final girl, the POV shots so prevalent in Friday the 13th (1980) and in the entire opening of Halloween (1978). Black Christmas also has a goalie mask in it which may have given the Friday the 13th world folk some inspiration. Another great Canadian slasher movie that is highly underrated is the original My Bloody Valentine (1980?), and another great Canadian horror is The Changeling (1980?) (a haunted house story). For some offbeat bizarro stuff please check out my three favourite WTF slasher recommends: Aerobicide (aka Killer Workout), Pieces, and Sleepaway Camp. All from the 70s/80s golden age of horror. Thanks for making videos eh.

This movie was em released in 1974, 4 years before Halloween. Here’s something to ponder. Janis is killed in the park before the movie starts. Billy follows Jess back to the sorority houseZ Billy has been in the attic and climbs back in. The sorority is called and Billy tells Barb “I’m going to kill you.” Then Billy proceeds to call the sorority after every kill. Now Jess is the final girl, however, Peter was a red herring. No Billy climbs down from the attic while Jess is sedated. As the camera pans out on the house, minutes later the phone rings. The assumption is that Billy has killed Jess and has called the sorority one last time.

There's no way of knowing for sure what her fate is or who the killer is, that's part of the on-going fascination with this film and open endings like this. I think a cool twist could've been if Chris (Art Hindle) had been the killer because nobody suspected him so to have had his face peek out the attic window at the end, I think would've been quite a surprise. Bottom line, not knowing for sure and leaving it up to the viewer's imagination is also what makes it a classic. It's a bit like some of those Italian horror/giallo and crime movies, they would quite often have illogical endings that didn't resolve everything for you on a silver platter but instead left more questions than answers which is partly why fans return to them again and again.

Hey guys, somebody on KZfaq posted a fan film movie sequel follow up to Black Christmas called "It's me Billy". It takes place around 50 years later after the events of the first movie. It's very creepy and captures most of what made the original Black Christmas the classic horror movie that it is. It's around 40 minutes long. So, if you guys ever get the chance, I highly recommend that you check out "It's me Billy". It's very very good! 😊

My favorite Xmas movie and one of my favorite films of all time. Period. So ahead of it's time in terms of style, content and even feminist themes. SO suspenseful and frightening. And also, really smart and darkly funny, with excellent acting and direction.

One of my favorite horror films. I'm so glad you reacted to it, guys. Many people love it. I love the 2006 remake too. I know, not many people will agree but I find it entertaining as well. The 2019 remake was God-awful though

That's because the 2019 one . Isn't even really a remake. It just uses the name an nothing else.

I like the 2006 version. While it's a re make, I would consider it more of a sequal than anything else. They go into Billy's story and explain things that the 1974 version (which is GREAT) leaves the viewer kind of hanging. Both versions are very good, but again, i consider the 2006 version more a sequal. 🎅🎄

@@joeymac3777 Yes, the 2006 version was more like a sequel. I don't get why critics and fans were so harsh to it. It had great killings and I really loved the idea with Billy's sister

Carpenter asked Bob Clark if he'd ever make a sequel to this (when they worked together on The Hills Have Eyes, a year before Carpenter made Halloween). Clark said the sequel would be Billy breaks out of a mental institution, finds a mask, and goes on a killing spree at Halloween...be titled Black Halloween. And then, well...

@@paulinegallagher7821 well...he ain't a billionaire living off of lies and misery, so I'd say: no. JC kinda ripped the idea, but he did his own thing. I don't blame him. Art is derivative by nature, and Carpenter *made* Halloween... albeit this movie is objectively better. 🤗

hi! I don't know if you guys watch movies with lgbtq characters in it but if you do, It would be so cool if you guys react to the taiwanese lgbtq coming of age film called "Your Name Engraved Herein." It's on Netflix and it's intense and emotional in the best way possible. The film is set in 1987 when martial law had just been lifted in Taiwan. I cried a lot of happy and sad tears. Also, there's english subtitles on it too!

The shot of Billy's eye in the crack of the door will forever creep me out. This movie is often considered feminist because of Jess standing firm in not bending to Peter and wanting to abort the baby. PS:(do NOT watch the attempt at a remake that was just terrible from the past few years, as it has nothing to do with this film and the director said "the message is more important than the plot."when it came to making it a powerful "feminist"piece(which was a dumb thing to say).

@@LA_HA Um, I am thinking you don't know the true history of Halloween. John Carpenter lived Black Christmas and asked if Bob Clark was going to do a sequel. He said maybe, not sure. Carpenter asked about it, Bob Clark answered that if he was going to do it, the sequel would be called Halloween which would be the day 10 years later that Billy/Agnes would escape from the mental institution they were in after being caught in the attic by the cops a little after the first movie ends. A few years later John Carpenter made a movie called Halloween and had the same plot as Black Christmas 2 was going to have. Everything I just said is facts. John Carpenter is trying to revise history and say that never happened. Facts!
