In my opinion, the purpose of entertainment is to provide distraction, whether it be from stress or important issues. So it's very telling that entertainers are used as an example of Black Excellence. If a black man builds a car that doesn't require conventional fuel, nobody cares. But if he bought a lambo, he's now repping black excellence. It's insane.

Dopamine shuts down negative emotions. Using entertainment, or other dopamine producing consumption, to help cope with negative feelings isn't inherently bad. It is bad when it's co-opted to recreate the conditions that produces an underclass who suffer more and rely on dopamine sources to cope with the suffering

Black people are also the only group of people that expect Rappers, Comedians, Actors and Singers to be our leaders. Yes there are Black entertainers that discuss political and social issues, but that’s the problem. They usually do this to promote something or juice up their brand. Nowadays it’s cool to be socially aware. However, there’s not one athlete or celebrity that would do what Muhammad Ali did, stand up for what’s right while risking their career and money. All of these Black entertainers are being socially conscious AND receiving a pay check. That’s not revolutionary. Because they discuss these topics we now all of a sudden have to see them as the new Malcom X, but when they do something that contradicts what they “believe” we forget that they’re entertainers, not political freedom fighters.

I genuinely thank God for you, bruh. I've been feeling this shit so heavily for such a long time, and you pretty much summed up all of what's been in my head. It pains me that black people think material possessions and what you own equates to what it means to be successful as a black person. Everybody wants to be famous, or in some position that gives them attention and money, but im like man.. you know what would be nice. To see some popular black scientists, engineers, and bio chemists. To see our people creating incredible things, curing diseases. We are such a gifted group. I just know we have so much more potential, and I just hate to see it being pissed away just because we want to feel just as important as rich whites.

I 2nd this motion and Echo the exact same sentiment I’m utterly disgusted with our culture. I moved to east Africa Tanzania in 2010 learned Swahili started a couple businesses and even bought some land I really wanted to start something but lack of support thievery and my own ignorance lead to great losses. Africans see our entertainers and try to mimic the same things they see in the music videos we are so lost🥺 and in my opinion it is because we forgot our creator a very long time ago and started worshipping other Gods and were scattered to the four corners of the earth. We will never prosper as a Nation if we don’t coalesce from Africa to Haiti, Jamaica and America Brazil and every other corner of the world we have been scattered if we don’t unite we’re finished!! And without God Uniting is hopelessly futile😞

Read books like “How to be AntiRacist”, “White Fragility”, “Freedom is a Comstant Struggle”, and boost Black and Indigenous activists’s voices especially and particularly in contexts and situations where they are not present and you can be their mouthpiece. Bro where have you been? This is what I have been saying all this time and all our brothers are blinded by materialism. This is true from Afrika to the United States. Capitalism and Imperialism should fall for the sake of humanity!!

I have to disagree. I don’t think the majority of black Americans think black excellence is only achieved with wealth and status. We all can see an educated, black man, or a woman doing his thing and say that’s black excellence. A lot of us think a black teacher educating the youth is excellence. We can look at our community organizers and leaders and see excellence. The idea that excellence is only financially gained is perpetuated by close minded people in unfortunate situations.

Honestly amazing work man. I’m Jewish, probably one of the ethnic/religious groups most present and emblematic when people talk about capitalism and capitalist excess. Its been something I’ve struggled due to me clashing with my community constantly over their individualistic mindsets and capitalistic goals when they only reason we as a people have survived as long as we did was by community solidarity. It’s interesting to hear from someone else some of the same things I’ve been feeling about the most prevalent figures in my community for years. Different people, similar problems I guess.

The energy is fire, I’m here for this video in whole. The jokes, the delivery, the intelligent message hidden within those things… just all round big ol “fuck yes please!”… we need more pissed off yet articulate and informed voices like yourself cause the “ask politely” respectability shite never has (and never will) work. Just birth yet another wave of “excellence” to distract… Note: I’m not Black but am marginalized via other shit and thus have my own distrust and hatred of the “excellence & bootstrap” bs
