Welcome to episode 9 of "Sarah, My Story" book review series hosted by Shauna from The Vintage Read Show.
In this 9th episode, we are introduced to Sir Robert Cooke and his tragic diagnosis of MND.
Sarah is still very popular, however, things start to sour slightly at Royal Ascot that year when Diana and Sarah naughtily poke their close friend in the bottom with their umbrellas!
Prince Andrew and Sarah headed off on a very successful Royal tour of Canada followed by an awful canoeing holiday, with black flies in the eggs and insects everywhere!
We hear about the Royal Christmas at Sandringham and learning to fly...
A fascinating chapter.
I will be reviewing Sarah Ferguson's book in detail every Monday!
See you in the comments!

I think Fergie had a lightness and sense of humor to her that Diana did not. Not to say Diana didn't have a sense of humor ... she actually did. But her relationship with Charles, due to her mental health, became very dark and emotional. Therefore, Fergie may have provided a respite for Charles during those difficult times.

Imagine Meghan being put through all of this! No wonder she couldn't cut it. She only wanted to live the fairy tale, but when she couldn't have it she made the excuse that she was being mistreated. What a miserable person she is. She did not want to sing for her supper. "Finding Freedom" takes on a much deeper meaning, doesn't it? My sister died of ALS MND like Sir Robert in his 50's 3 yrs ago. She died 3 weeks after she had supported her son in completing his dissertation in Sport Science....She was passionate in supporting his education as he overcome many challenges and as a professional physiotherapist she was well placed to check the final draft going through it with a 'fine tooth comb' even though she could barely function. I think Fergie is dirty. She’s gotten away with a lot. Charging for access to the RF, etc. She and Andrew owed on their chalet in Switzerland and pled that they didn’t have the money to pay the note. Yet she turned around and bought a beautiful expensive home in London. Andrew and her are two peas in a pod.

I read Sarah’s memoir and a biography. Sarah had largely been the architect of her own problems. At times she has gone throughout her life never really learning from her mistakes. As with money, Sarah has not made the best life choices. I do not think royal life was the best environment for Sarah or Diana. Both women experienced childhood abandonment and self-esteem issues. I wish Sarah well, and I hope she continues to be cancer free in the future. Thank you Shauna for all the videos you film.

Poor Sarah, always looking for positive affirmation throughout her life. Love these readings thank you Shauna. I remember David Niven being interviewed by Michael Parkinson. He was slurring his speech and, of course, viewers thought he was tipsy ! His son was watching and he realised that something was wrong. It was later announced that he had MND, an awful illness, where the mind stays intact, while the body slowly shuts down. The loss of dignity and helplessness is devastating for both those living with it and their loved ones.

I actually encountered Sarah F and Prince Andrew. It was early morning on a Canadian military base. My husband was in the military. A woman friend of ours from another base was in the barracks on the base we were on because she was taking a course. She was leaving later that morning and she asked me to meet her one last time in her room. So, I was crossing the base from private married quarters and came up to the parade square outside the barrack blocks. There, at the edge, was a helicopter. I spotted Andrew first as he was speaking with some officers. Behind him was Sarah! She looked right at me and grinned a huge naughty grin. As if she was saying “who are you sneaking out to see in the barracks. I smiled back and hurried away to my friends room. No one believed me! I later wished I had gone up to speak to her, but I had not because it might have gotten my husband in trouble. I don’t think that most people knew they were there.

Whatever you think about Sarah, you have to admit she is a trooper; flying a helicopter takes skill and the canoe trip sounds awful. I wonder if they had to bring different outfits for each day or if they could wear the same thing? Let’s see, 6 outfits a day x 3= 18 different outfits minimum. That’s a lot of suitcases. My grandmother passed away from motor neurones disease. It is a frustrating disease. It's the perfect way to discribe it! The light and humour etc is all there but they can't get it out. The sadness, at not being able to be part of things like she used to be, you could see it in her eyes. But she kept her humour she just tried different ways to show it. It was heartbreaking to watch and frustrating for her.

Stayed at the Savoy in London in the 1970s and was intrigued when I saw waiters wearing morning suits for breakfast, a different suit for lunch and yet another suit for dinner, that is, according to social etiquette. No wonder the Queen's mother loved the Savoy. Back then, there was still an old world charm. For some reason or other, I seem to remember waiters wearing long coattail jackets at lunchtime and thinking they got it all back to front with the evening attires. I don't think they do this today.

Sarah's badly behaved dogs are no surprise, considering their mistress. 😅 Sarah is hard to dislike whilst driving you crazy at the same time. I started to dislike her when they did "It's a knockabout" on the TV. I thought onlly she would convCharles to do something stupid, because even then you could see they were good friends. Very pretty lady, with bad clothes, but I didn't realise she lacked money. Again Andrew proves to be arrogant not only to servants but also to his beloved wife. Another excellent read, with laughs, drama and kindness on show.

I've often heard about the constant changing of clothes during Christmas at Sandringham, but hearing it all again in Sarah's memoir makes it all seem so exhausting! Half the fun of Christmas day in my family is lounging around in our Christmas pajamas opening presents and eating a leisurely breakfast after sleeping in late after midnight church services. After the hustle and bustle of the days leading up to Christmas, it's just so nice relaxing with family...what a drag if we felt the need to change clothes every two hours - LOL! Maybe that's why Prince William and his family prefer to stay at nearby Amner Hall and possibly avoid all those silly wardrobe changes. I was surprised to hear that King Charles and Fergie have grown much closer following their mutual cancer scares, but it came as a surprise to me to learn that they actually had a warm friendship during his marriage to Diana. Thanks for another entertaining chapter, Shauna!

❤ So many remembrances of that time, I have always read avidly about the Royals, in the newspapers. Before Diana and Sarah, the royal family were very bland, but my Mum used to tell me all about the stories about Margaret and Philip, (not them together) but as individuals and they seemed as 'interesting' 😊 as the antics Meghan and Harry get up to. Diana knew her place in the family and she really was the jewel in the crown. If only they had made a friend of her. You could sum up very quickly about her antics though and all the staging tactics she would use, thinking she was fooling us. 😊 I have read in several articles about all the change of clothes when staying with Royals. My admiration is growing for Charles as listening to all the information now available in all the books you are reading and I'm loving every one of your programmes on your channel. Sarah really was a nice person and so glad we get to know her early life stories. Thank you so much Shauna 😊❤

@angelabinns5726 Diana wasn’t a jewel, she was a nightmare. Diana feigned interest in Charles’ interests and hobbies (Balmoral, fishing hunting, etc.)-basically, she pretended to be who Camilla is, a hunting, shooting, fishing, reading country girl. Then as soon as they were on their honeymoon (most of which was at Balmoral), Diana declared each of his interests as borrrring. When the honeymoon moved on to Balmoral she would have have fits of screaming and crying when he wouldn’t do what she wanted when she wanted him to do it (the court was at Balmoral for the summer so there was official business going on and many witnesses). After the honeymoon she proceeded to, one by one, separate him from his friends (he would give in to avoid conflict with her), then his staff (who would quit because she would not look at or speak to those she wanted to leave). In her mind, she loved him, but then attempted to change everything about him, and if he wanted any kind of peace, he would comply. Diana and her family, particularly the Spencers, were very ambitious and misrepresented who she was to the RF, particularly regarding her emotional health & stability. The Spencer’s actually had a bit of a reputation for unstable men (Diana’s mom cited abuse in the divorce), but the RF didn’t think the mental issues affected the Spencer women. Diana actually refused to cooperate with mental health professionals provided by the RF when they realized how unstable she was, and wouldn’t accept mental health help for years (yes, the RF tried to get her professional help) until a friend threatened to out her bulimia to the press because she was afraid it would kill her. And that is just how she treated Charles. As a grown woman she held hostility towards her mother for leaving her abusive father (her mother took Diana & her brother with her but lost custody), pushed her 60 year old stepmother down the stairs (long after Diana married btw), threw her stepmother’s things out the window in trash bags after her father died, fired one staff for claiming expenses with the palace for some trips with Diana (completely legitimate expenses), and fired another who was the currier delivering tapes to Andrew Morten for her for accepting reimbursement from the publishing company. The virginal “Shy Di” persona was completely a creation of a press. A bit like the common impression that the Queen Mother “sweet ol’granny.”

@@dianeshelton9592 don't forget that it's very cold outside in winter there, so you can't wear the same indoors as outdoors, especially if it's wet. So you'd change anyway if you wanted to go out. The biggest problem is they can't lounge around the house in trakky daks like we poors get to do. I feel that living in a grand house is like living on a cruise ship, you have to "dress" to leave your room because there are so many other people around. And just like on a cruise ship you need to change clothes for your different activities, you can't go to dinner in public in your bathers, for example.

@@Anna_Key none of those are excuses. It’s perfectly possible to wear a lovely wool skirt and thin jumper to breakfast. Add on a thicker jumper and long boots under the coat which everyone wears to go out. Come back in and wear a blouse for lunch. Add on the jumper for an outside walk together with a thicker jacket together walking boots not smart boots for your afternoon walk . Change for dinner if it’s expected and there you are . Adding on land taking off layers as needed . As for cruising wear what you want, dress for dinner if you want but you can wear one dress or a pair of trousers and a top all day if needed. I think Sarah did the change the whole outfit thing because she didn’t plan and think. About what to wear , I am sure the royal allies don’t spend all day changing clothes all the time . They think ahead and change their outfits when they want but start from base layer that can be accepted. I don’t live far from Sandringham . Our home is modern so well insulated. I start off a day in a tunic dress, put long thick tights on if I know I am going out, add a jumper and a coat, when I go out together with warm boots, take off the jumper and coat when I get back in. My dress is smart enough and comfy enough to have lunch in , an apron covers it for cooking. Still got the same dress on , snuggle down to watch dr who on the tele a Christmas tradition and if we go out in the evening add some jewellery and the dress might do , or get dressed if I want to coat on again , thinner tights and shoes for theatre and

Interesting that Sarah wrote she didn’t get praise for her work on Royal Tours but, rather, only got comments when she did something wrong. I believe Princess Diana said the same thing in an interview. I wonder why the husbands of these women never complimented them when they did a good job.

@itsmesam1967 Charles was accompanied on the slopes that day by a mountain guide, Bruno Sprecher, and by a group of friends that included Major Hugh Lindsay, a former equerry to the queen, Charles, and Patti Palmer-Tomkinson, and a Swiss police officer. While the group was "in a stationary position off-piste-meaning they were away from the prepared ski runs-an avalanche happened. It wasn’t against the rules or illegal to go off the marked ski paths; an avalanche warning had been in effect above 5,280 feet on the day of the accident, the Los Angeles Times reported. But before the incident, all reports pointed towards favourable weather conditions. Charles was caught in an avalanche at about 6,000 feet that killed one of his closest friends, Major Hugh Lindsay, former equerry to the Queen. Another member of the royal party of six, Patricia Palmer-Tomkinson, broke both legs in the accident. “‘In the wake of the accident, a criminal inquiry was opened about whether Charles should face charges for the accident. In 1964, for example, a 21-year-old Olympian skiier in Switzerland was charged with homicide by negligence following the deaths of two other skiiers in his care. Though Charles and his party caused the avalanche, no one individual could be blamed for Lindsay's death. "Prosecutors said that, by skiing outside official marked runs, the group had assumed a collective risk that excluded any one member from personal responsibility for the accident," AP reported in 1988, at the time of the accident.’”

Gosh , listening to you read , interpret and discuss Sarah’s book, is wonderful. You have brought out a deeper perspective of this time. I’ve never been a fan of Fergie especially as she must know about Andrew’s proclivities but hey it couldn’t have been easy for her in the RF particularly in the 80’s/90’s, and now we know.

In 2009 Fergie said that if only she and Andrew had moved to Canada, their shaky marriage might have been saved. Perhaps similar to the feeling the couple had when they were holidaying in Scotland at Balmoral. Fergie is quoted as saying, "We could have been Governor of Canada living in Ottawa in the Government House... It would have kept us together and we would probably be together now." Supposedly there was talk between Ottawa and London soon after their 1986 wedding and 1987 trip to Canada that the Yorks could become royal representatives in Canada, but nothing was ever confirmed. Prince Andrew also attended high school in Ontario, Canada in the mid-1970s.

As soon as you said "they had to carry their canoes" I knew they had to be at The Boundry Waters in Canada. THIS THIS THIS is such a magnificent place and it creeps down into our state Minnisota here in America. Only transportation is walking... and canoeing. I have never heard of woman going... though I'm sure they have. It is a place you are invited to... a fishermans dream from what we hear. I know people who have gone.

Oh so late. Great read Shauna, I think Sarah is a fence sitter, she knows which side her bread is buttered. Without any connection with the Royal Family, would be way off in obscurity. I always believed the Royals were committed to the service of others, not for self praise. I think Princess Catherine displays this ethos every time she steps out. Thankyou again for a fun read. Always enjoy your style. ❤️🌻

Yes Shauna, I agree with your observations about the apparent re-kindling of the friendship between Charles and Fergie. It may be the case that Charles has a tendency to forgive and open his heart. This may be compassionate, but in his position compassion requires an objective and firm application. Does he ignore Fergie's past at his peril? Fergie plus Andrew are imo a pair of ticking time bombs. Charles' own upbringing was the root of that type of personality. It is interesting that William, while seeming much more balanced in this respect, perhaps protectively harbours a slightly untrusting outlook of others.

Some of the changes make sense. Have breakfast in normal clothes, then put on your Sunday best for church. Change from indoor clothes to outdoor clothes if you choose to go for a walk on the estate. Dressing up for dinner would make it an event, but what a chore to do every every night.

I have been on a few of those wilderness canoe trips in Canada. The bugs are relentless and I had cut a 3 day trip into a 2 hour trip after being bitten alive through my clothing. I couldn't avoid bugs biting my face even with a hat and head screen on. Once a mosquito is inside the face net you can't get rid of it without letting another number of mosquitos and black flies in. It drives you insane. Can't feel the black flies bite but you will notice later you were bitten because your skin is scabbed over where they silently feast on your blood.
