It's Black History Month, and so, once again, I'm dedicating a video to learning more about notable people and events that maybe we didn't learn in school! My friends and I are challenging ourselves on our knowledge of Black history, and like before, I can't believe what I learned!!
Thank you so much to all of my incredible friends who came to help make this video possible!!

My favorite black historic figure (I just recently wrote on her) is Phillis Wheatley. She was a civil rights and abolitionist poet during the American revolutionary times. She could speak English, Greek, and Latin at the age of 9 and started writing poetry at the age of 13 and was shortly published after. She was the third woman and the first slave to be published in America. She actively fought the stigma at the time of how Africa Americans couldn’t take care of themselves with her art. She was internationally renowned and George Washington (who also believed the toxic stigma about slaves) loved her poetry and invited her over and she single handedly changed his mind about how black people couldn’t hold their own. She changed the opinion of America’s founding father. She was a vital stepping stone for black women and women in general in the literature world.

Play Thing he doesn’t assume they know the most about this month. It’s just black history month. Keyword being, black. He has them research significant people and events that don’t get much attention in order to shine light on them. He isn’t making any assumptions.

gjaddajg there isn’t a white history month because white history is an overwhelming majority of any history class besides ones directed at a specific culture or minority group.

So this video prompted me to look it up, and even though 1995 is the year Mississipi ratified the 13th amendment, they didn't actually notify the US Archivist... so it actually STILL didn't *officially* happen until 2013, apparently. WTF, Mississippi.

Next time my history teacher starts ranting about all the great white people who did awesome things, i'll most definitely make sure to talk to her about all the incredible black people who have acheived things just as fascinating and inspirational. And its all because of you thomas, i wouldnt have known any of these amazing facts so thank you! You and your friends are AWESOME! Thanks for sharing this with us! Black people definitely deserve more credit for what they've done in history! Youre all awesome, and have a great day! Love you xx

Deathly Wraith im sorry you misunderstood but im definitely not taking the credit away from white people for all the great things they've done! Its just my teacher never talks about black history and its a very interesting topic so i'll make sure to bring it up in class. Dont worry, white people are great! But so are black people. Probably should have worded the other comment better, sorry! 😊

Thank you Thomas, Leo, Derionna, Jamahl, Dahila and Terence for sharing some interesting history and wisdom on Black people who contributed so much to the world and made a difference. This was really insightful and very enjoyable to watch. It’s a real shame this history isn’t expanded upon in actual school. By the way, Jamahl flirting with Thomas was amazing!😂 Derionna’s “Yeah, he flirts with everything” was absolutely perfect! Gold! Lmfao!😂😂🤣

The Old Globe in Balboa Park (California) did Red Velvet in this past season. I was lucky enough to see it, and I think everyone going into theatrical professions should know about Aldridge. He was forced to wear white-face for most of his career, as critics ruined him for no other reason than his race. He deserved better, and the play is a beautiful living tribute to his life.

My favorite black historical figure is LOUIS ARMSTRONG. He was a trumpet player in jazz and is known for his famous song 'what a wonderful world '. He also sang and played with Ella Fitzgerald. He was one of the besr trumpet players of all time and was born at the center of music New Orleans. he was inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. He was a very influential man to the genre of jazz and inspired a lot of famous artist we know today. Had to put that our there cause I feel like we need to appreciate coloured people more. Y'all are grrreat!

Hi, I'm 15 and live in Britain and I am taking History right now and am learning about the American Civil Rights Movement. At first I was really confused why we were learning about American history when we could be learning British history but I am so glad that I am learning about these sorts of things and that I am being educated on some of the most important things in life and the history around them. I wish that they teached children in schools about this kinda stuff from a younger age. I am sooooooo happy that you are using this platform to teach people about the black history in America. Love Heather xxx p.s. I love all your videos

The whole point is that we’re NOT taught about black people who played a significant role in history. This is what black history month is supposed to be about. It’s not purely based off of their skin tone: that would be pointless. You know this and you’re just making the point to be confrontational. Like for example I didn’t know half the people mentioned in this video, and I enjoyed learning. And you keep mentioning AMERICAN schools and what AMERICA is like, but did it ever occur to you that America isn’t the whole world and that one of these people might not be from there? You keep mentioning America too but 42 million people are still black citizens according to statistics and that’s a hell of a lot of people.
