Chapter 6: Blast Pit
After a harrowing encounter with the HECU on the surface, Gordon is forced back down into the facility amidst an overwhelming mortar strike and learns that they are deployed in Black Mesa to cover up everything about the incident, which includes killing any and all personnel associated with the project. A fellow scientist advises him that their only hope of stopping the invasion rests in the hands of the Lambda Team, a research team located on the other end of the base. However, in order to get there, Gordon must first traverse the rocket test labs of Silo D and avoid a deadly creature that has suddenly emerged from the blast pit.

Notes:
- Gordon can take the lift down to the tunnels at 1:02 as opposed to the service ladders, but he will miss out on the Shotgun ammo as shown at 1:55
- All trams in Black Mesa feature an emergency stop if Gordon leaves it while in motion, as shown at 5:00. In HL1 if Gordon moves off the tram they will continue going on the rail uninterrupted
- Gordon will get launched into the air if he doesn't jump off the tram at 5:47 before it collides with the debris
- The "secret room" at 10:55 is also present in HL1
- The Tentacles in Black Mesa never seem to enter an "idle" state like in HL1 where they stop pounding the floors and do inquisitive taps to try to locate prey
- In HL1, shooting the Tentacles enough times at their "stems" will cause them to temporarily retreat beneath the blast pit. In Black Mesa, they will never withdraw
- Instead of taking the ladder, Gordon can jump straight down the shaft at 15:09 and safely land in the water with no fall damage
- If the exhaust fan spins up to full speed before Gordon climbs the ladder back out from the maintenance platform, he can turn it off again to slow it back down (17:43)
- The Houndeyes at 21:59 WILL wake up if Gordon does not crouch past them or gets too close to them. There is also a shield battery in the alcove behind them if Gordon chooses to kill them instead
Trivia:
- The lighting of the very first area of this chapter is a reference to the game series S.T.A.L.K.E.R. according to the level lead
- The second of three emergency broadcasts in the game can be heard at 2:35
- The HEV Suit's geiger counter will go off when Gordon is near radioactive material and a film grain effect will be applied to the screen, such as the big pit at 5:56. The counter will click more rapidly the closer he is to the source. For some odd reason in my playthrough it's not captured
- The area that Gordon passes through at 7:22 is the base of Silo D, which explains the huge amount of radioactive waste
- VOX lines in this chapter, such as at 9:16, were added in the 1.5 update
- The Silo D complex is comprised of three Cold War-era missle silos (9:39): D-01, which houses the rocket engine (and tentacles), D-02, which serves as a massive exhaust chamber, & D-03, which contains the generator that powers the engine
- The walkway at 10:04 leading to Silo D-03 is destroyed, a callback to HL1 where Gordon can destroy the same walkway by shooting the explosive barrels on it
- In past versions of the game, the scientist at 10:40 will hilariously ragdoll when he dies. This no longer occurs, though there was also a brief period prior to the 1.5 patch where after "dying", he will turn his head towards Gordon if he interacts with him
- It can be seen that the scientist at 11:16 isn't even pressing the "FIRE" button on the console
- Though the Tentacle is shown capable of reaching into the control room at 11:16, it will never do it again even if Gordon makes a ton of noise
- In Hl1, the guard that perishes to the Tentacle is on the same side of the chamber as Gordon, not the opposite (12:26)
- The Guard that dies at 12:26 is referred to by his partner as "Leeroy" at 12:56, and by his last name as "Jenkins" at 30:10, revealing his full name to be "Leeroy Jenkins", which is a reference to the legendary World of Warcraft character who charged headfirst into his problems with no forethought - a fitting name to say the least
- As seen at 13:55, the railings that line each floor of the blast chamber will fall down when the Tentacles strike them
- If Gordon quickly descends the elevator shaft at 23:40 before the lift falls, he can see that the scientist at 23:52 was observing him descending
- The pit at 24:38 housed a Bullsquid in HL1
- In HL1, Smithers (26:00) was found hiding directly ontop of the generator
- The Tentacles' mournful death wail can be faintly heard at 29:36
- In HL1, it was possible for the Guard at 29:55 to be killed by the exhaust heat from the rocket engine
- The guard is referencing the movie Predator (1987) at 29:55
- The area at 30:50 received a massive graphical overhaul in the 1.5 update
- The .357 Magnum makes its return to this chapter, and can be picked up from a dead Guard at 30:58, just like in HL1

Blast Pit is one of my favourite chapters. It oozes with atmosphere. It's probably most remembered for the Tentacles in the silo and the whole sequence surrounding them, but my favourite parts are the moments where Gordon is just making his way through the dimly lit tunnels and corridors without an enemy in sight, deep in the bowels of the facility, as it creaks and groans all around him. Moments like the initial tram ride to the silo. The pits pooling with the eerie glow of radioactive waste. The moody shadows cast by the walkways surrounding the main silo. The trek through the sewers with that creepy Joel Nielsen ambient music. The vastness of the exhaust silo. Coming off the survival horror feel of UC and OC, and the action-oriented nature of WGH, the slower pace of Blast Pit before and in between the Tentacle encounters help articulate how big Black Mesa actually is, and also provides a sense of isolation and much needed quietness after the hustle and bustle of the previous chapters - before encountering the Tentacles Gordon doesn't come across a single survivor. That being said, the Tentacle boss is definitely a great moment in this chapter. Like I've said before, this is where Half-Life's level design really shines through, when there is a central problem that is presented initially, and the whole chapter revolves around Gordon working to solve that problem.

BM may not have the most modern graphics, and yet it's one of the best games i've played in recent years. BM manages to capture the atmosphere and tell you a story without boring interruptions. it's fast paced when needed, but dares to slow things down to set a mood (with an awesome soundtrack played at exactly the right moments), or give an emotion. And that's something a lot of AAA titles lack these days. Not to forget that BM started out as a fan project, which is just insanely cool.

I'm only about 5 minutes in and I already love two things about this video: the revelation of scale of the disaster told through the Emergency Broadcast System- Black Mesa dun fucked up; and that moment between you and the Houndeye at around 5:15. You're both so curious and unsure of one another, but you go back about your respective business. There's this brief, tense moment in both of your minds of "Will I need to fight this creature I've never encountered?" Really makes the interdimensional animal- as well as the AI- seem sentient and partial to choosing self-preservation over an unnecessary fight.

Yeah, those EMS broadcasts are a great addition to the game and help connect the events of Half-Life and HL2 much more closely. That Houndeye encounter was neat, I'm not sure if their AI is designed to be inquisitive like that (I know they are in HL1) but it sure did make for a great moment, I agree.

@@Sexy_Nutella The enemy AI is what I love most about HL/BM. They don't just come at you and attack mindlessly, like in OG DOOM or arcade rail shooters. They have personality, and it seems like they think, weigh the options, as a player would. I'm not sure if Crowbar Collective engineered the NPCs to sniff/drink blood and meat (like in the freezer section in HL1)- we do see that one Houndeye in Office Complex watching the TV, but that may only be scripted- or behave any way else like the HL1 AI, but it's nice that we get little moments like this: adds so much more depth to the game's world!

I really like how you play, observing the world and letting the viewer know what you think, its not just memorized quick gameplay with no attention to details.

To be honest it is very scripted because I do have to memorize what I want to show the viewers at each moment of gameplay. However, I absolutely did not want to skip through the levels without paying attention to details, like you said. I am glad you enjoy this playstyle.

You’re the man! Such good reflexes and skill. And you only eliminate the enemies that need eliminated. No wasted ammo killing barnacles that can’t harm you and sleeping houndeyes that you can sneak past. Adds an element of realism. And just by zooming from point to point you can convey your intentions just as easily as talking. Love it! Liked and subbed

I made it a point to not shoot enemies that were not in my way - in my mind Gordon kills only in self-defense, as he is a scientist at heart and not just a mindless soldier killing everything in his path. The zooms I definitely intended to be a tool to show Gordon's thought process, so I'm happy that it came across that way. Cheers!

I like this series, no Commentary, and Embraces the surroundings before moving on. It feels like your playing it but actually you're just watching the walkthrough. Btw I like when you embrace the HLDEdition's Atmosphere and also left alone the Hound Eyes. Keep it up 🤗🤗🤗

@@Sexy_Nutella makes you wonder if there was any point in killing other Black Mesa personnel when the HECU started losing control of a simple containment operation, other than to spite Gordon Freeman which is what most of the Marines did regardless if there were aliens pouring in by the dozens. But I guess the US Government thought that they could clean out the facility and start over since it had a significant amount of defense contracts invested in it before they decided to deploy a nuclear weapon to destroy it entirely.

One thing which I'm realising just now, the scientist in the power silo, he is not being arrogant, but insecure. He volunteered to turn on the power, but he didn't even move the transformer into place. He clearly got scared of the monster in the other control room, and is acting arrogant towards the other scientists to hide that.

28:49 finally and i found its sountrack in the blast pit part, you have no idea i was listening to it over and over again because i was so impressed with this music but I’m even more amazed at how you replace this soundtrack with the exact moves there.especially when you threw the satchel bomb in front of the tentacles while the electric guitars and drums were playing in the back. Why is no one talking about it?😍

There are some interesting changes with the definitive edition. In HL1 and older versions of Black Mesa the Xen terraforming wasn't seen until Surface Tension and the HECU (at least seemed to) have the upper hand until they started pulling out in Forget About Freeman. Now we see the first terraformed area at the bottom of the silo, and the aliens seem to start to dominate the battle in On A Rail (maybe even as soon as the Gargantua shows up in Power Up). It really does a better job of showing just how desperate the situation is, with the military completely outmatched and Xen apparently spreading outside of the base. I love the vibe of "you are humanity's only hope" that it has now.

Yeah, Black Mesa illustrates the extent and severity of the Xen infestation very well. That's why I think it actually ties in with Half-Life: Alyx very well in terms of showing off infested areas.

Oh, man. I remember watching the 2008 trailer of this chapter. Back when they used HL2 models and the Scientists looked and sounded differently and less silly.

Haha yeah, if there's one thing I wish they kept from that trailer, it's the desperate voice acting of the scientist that gets dragged away. But I guess they had to revoice him to make him sound similar to the other scientists.

I wonder if Nihilanth can detect movement activity in Black Mesa. Some of the facility personnel were killed by headcrabs while they were sleeping. There are zombies in ventilation system and we know for sure that zombies cannot climb there. There is only one horrfying truth comes to my mind, facility personnel get exhausted in time and try to find a safe place to get some rest, then Nihilanth sends those headcrabs to hunt them down when their pants are down. There are also HECU zombies and portable military matresses in a room in Power Up.

Headcrabs are known to clamber inside vents, and it's not out of the question to think that they might have simply been teleported in one, or jumped in one. Not sure if the Nihilanth can control them, I'm more keen on the former.

@@Sexy_Nutella Yeah…They’re definitely Smashing everything into pieces…they used to look more Umm…Skinnier and more spiky then they are now in its concept art..it includes the base/ Main part of its body of this weird dome with a cone on the top and that cone is like a pinkish spiked stomach, is what it looks like… They look as if they’re a miniature Gene worm just like how the controllers are related to the big Fetuses themselves…Jeff has tentacles in his concept art but they’re a-lot more like the Hyrda than the Tentacles themselves they’re called Dittos and Jeff also is more robotic and even has a gun on his right arm…

This level scared me as a kid. I couldn't hear the security guard's warning inbetween all the loud bangings and kept wondering how to get past the giant monsters that kept insta-killing me. Having to traverse in close proximity to them added to the trauma even further. I relied on shooting at/bombing the tentacles and use the small time window of them retreating to make a mad dash to the doorways. Had shivers every time. It was a different level for me than most. I lowkey hated it because it scared me... but maybe it was the whole point all along.

I also didn't know you could stealth through that section in HL1. I just ran and hoped for the best haha. In retrospect like you said it made for a much more harrowing experience.

This game is fantastic! Today i've played it and oh boy what a masterpiece. I appreciate that Black Mesa i'snt a total ripoff of half life, because Black Mesa has still almost the same levels but new more level design and more tasks, and also the graphics are very good, And the graphics will still be relevant in the future ;)

If I recall correctly, tentacles do get on an idle mode (or at least they used to) when you get at the very back of the control room. This worked for me before the 1.0 edition, I haven't tried since.

When I played through in the last couple of weeks the tentacles never stopped tapping the same spot over and over so there were spots I needed to throw a nade to distract them. When I played HL Source they tapped different spots once in a while so you could sneak past if you were patient.

In HL1, when I reached the area at 7:23, the two bullsquids in the radioactive pool would start fighting each other, and I could pick off the one that survived. It was the first time I saw this behaviour (usually bullsquids are solitary). Looks like the bullsquids are no longer territorial in Black Mesa.

On a side note, I don't know why BM skipped the part where the water on the floor gets electrified and the player has to use the overhead pipes to cross over. When I played HL1, I got stuck there for a few hours before figuring it out.

Yeah, it's quite tricky to not wake them. My recommendation is to get as far away from them as possible. It's probably the noise level that wakes them up.

My headcanon is that Gordon is as much of a scientist as he is a fighter, and as such if they don't attack him, he doesn't attack them. If the Houndeyes wake up, Gordon can easily dispatch them given his previous encounters.

I'm inclined to think the former, because there's already a bunch of signage in the area warning staff about radiation hazards. I think all that waste came from the rocket tests before the incident.

There was radioactive waste from the testrockets long before the incident. After a few years of rocket testing and radioactive build-up, they decided to decommission the whole silo and made it a dumping ground for radioactive waste. The plan was to let the whole silo flood with radioactive waste so it could be stored somewhere.
