The key to writing a good black metal song is more than just combining techniques together. This applies to songwriting in any genre. You have to build your song from the ground up based on the fundamental principles of the genre itself. This is even more important when fusion genres together and doing covers of songs in a different style.

I like Leong's vocabulary, precisely and articulately describing aesthetics and structure of music without obfuscation or hype.

I dont usually comment on videos but hey... 2 years ago i saw your video about the functional significance of tone in metal aswell as the two note riff thing. Back then i took my first steps at guitar aswell as composing black music for the first time ever, a music that i have been a fan of for the last decade (i'm 20). Two years later here i am, after an EP with my band, almost 50 live shows, 2 months before our first LP and my solo album, still admiring your work and thinking that you deserve way more! You sir are true inspiration! Thank you very much for everything!

Awesome dude, this is what I started out doing these videos for in the first place. I appreciate you intentionally not promoting your own work here and for that, I'd be honored if you let me know the name of your band and work so I can check it out.

Dope shirt dude! I agree the use of reverb in production is kind of a necessity to reign parts into a mix kind of creating a chain link to different parts so that they have a common sonic pallet otherwise they just kind of sound like they dont belong in the mix. Even just a touch of reverb or natural compression of a distortion pedal with the drive and mix pretty much all the way down makes a huge difference in making parts sound like they all belong together.

Wow this cover by Taake is amazing. I love Taake and The Cure so that's perfect. I think all these elit black metal losers should listen to this cover and other songs like Day by Katatonia (a wonderful post-punk/goth song made by a black metal band) so they could understand that you don't nessecerly have to listen solely to black metal to make/be black metal. Taake is great example of how to innovate a bit the old format of black metal and bands like Peste Noire, Gris, Shining and many more have showed that you can change even more.

Hey Brian, do you need to study music to compose that riffs? or what knowledge do you need to figure out riffs?
@ApathyBM
@ApathyBM 7 жыл бұрын
Not at all, I write what I think sounds good. But the merit in studying music is ear training. It really helps get the music from my head onto the fretboard, which is essentially what songwriting is. By learning all the intervals, I know which notes I want to play without having to touch a guitar.

Good vid. So much better than some mutt telling people that if you want to be "Black Metal," just record it with your cellphone and splice it together later. It does have it's own musical style which is very closely related to true surf rock (not Beach Boys shit).

In terms of combining black metal with other genres, what about slam death metal with black metal? I think that'd be interesting since, tone wise, they are polar opposites.

Interesting video Brian, well done! Personally however I respectfully disagree, BM does not need any common techniques or style it's original intention still burns like a black flame. It's satanic, evil, adversarial, defiant. The style of guitar work, tempo, tuning are irrelevant. Venom, Merciful Fate, Blasphemy are all black metal yet their sound and styles are very disimilar. The intent is what makes it BM, not identifiable sound and production values.
