Masochist is someone who enjoys pain on themselves. A Sadist is someone who enjoys giving pain to others

Ren just said in his twitch stream that this was written when he was in an angry self-destructive mood. A lot of artists purge dark thoughts through their art. It’s just an outlet. As in “Hi Ren”, there’s light and dark in all of us. Unfortunately there are those who are going to take this song literally, and overlook that the lyrics are just metaphors - “There’s a killer on the beat”.

Also, the main line of the hook - with the music dropped out from under it for emphasis - flips it. He's saying "don't trip" about all the dark and violent things he's saying, because he's a masochist. He's only into hurting himself. As with a lot of Ren's music, this is ultimately a soundtrack of inner struggle, not actual outward-focused, nihilistic violence. I like that you made the "dark and light" connection with "Hi Ren." With its wide stylistic range, I sometimes imagine Ren's work as songs from a rock/rap opera with "Hi Ren" as its thematic base. With that idea in mind, "Masochist" would be a moment in the show where the devil on the sick boi's shoulder, Bad Ren in full "News flash!" mode, has fully infested Ren's thoughts and he/they sing a deep, dark, destructive song about being in a deep, dark, self-destructive place. Anyway, I love all the stuff he's doing right now. I hope he never constrains his creativity for labels or "the money game," but I equally hope he never constrains it for fans. I just want Ren to be Ren and I want to witness it happening. And I love not knowing what to expect each time. It's exciting!

I think the whole "kill" list verse is the idea of killing all your attachments to get to the real you. First, he lists the external things (the system, religion, etc). Then he lists the "you" things - your ego, your culture, your masters. Finally, he goes external - parents, partners, etc. It is a check list of walls you have to tear down to discover yourself. At least that's how I see it.

I think if you are a casual fan you might not get all the metaphors, but this song is dark, raw, powerful. If youve ever stood on the precipice, you get it and recognize it for the purge that it is. Side note, a masochist takes in the pain

Simplified, a sadist gives pain, a masochist receives pain. He said, in his live stream after the premiere, that he wrote this when he was angry, in pain and feeling dark, pessimistic and self-destructive.

What I do like is the experimental process and freedom with which he's makes music. He isn't trying to make music everyone likes, or music that fits someone else's idea of what he should do. He is making music from himself warts and all. It's brave, and innovative, and only possible because he's independent. The spiri of punk lives in Ren.

A masochist is a person who gets pleasure from being hurt or controlled by another person!! ren writes "Kill these metaphors I write to all attachments in this life" That is saying a lot about what the song is saying! If you are a masochist then you all in some ways are doing this to yourselves and that is what really hurts! This is genius writing!!!!

This for me is a track that I LOVE for the fact it's a direct challenge to everything all of us feel strongly about in one way or another, especially when it comes to religion... But he is also trying to make a point that when we break it down and take away all those things, what are we left with... We are all human.. can we still learn to relate to each other without the labels and belief that our way of life is the RIGHT one compared to others! Ren challenges us to actively listen... Read beyond the instinctual REACTION and think about it and how others also see us, no matter what our culture and beliefs. This is one of the most challenging tracks, but also important for us all.... ❤

Does anyone remember 'My Name Is'? Ren is playing. He's an artist. Purging. Going deep into the underneath. Just pure expression. Art is as art does, makes you question, not always a pretty result, but hey, this is a banger. Rebirth seems to be the overall message, to me anyhow. Much love people.

I honestly feel that Ren besides being the genius artist that he is, is also soo dam psychologically intelligent that he stuffs these words we were told are tabu to say and talk about our entire lives directly in our faces showing us that we are fine, no need to flip out. if you actually pay attention to the lyrics Ren puts the antidote line explaining all the lyrics that just dropped your jaw. fkn genius!!!

Between you guys, i have been on a musical trip that has me excited like Im a kid again. 1st of all Ren has completely upended what I thought of the limits of music. Ive seen and heard so many amazing musicians in my life (played with a bunch of them) and there are very few that have changed my life quite like Ren. Its like a dark room when a blinding light comes on and you say "oh shit thats what it looks like!" 2nd, Ill never be able to play or hear "boys are back" without hitting everyone with a resounding 40!!! Was real curious how you would respond to this one. Like all things, there is a lot of symbolism and metaphore in Ren's music. The Fight Club analogy was pretty spot on - kill away all the things you love (metaphor) and are attached to so that you can learn to love yourself and appreciate your life... and the important things in it.

I like that he switches it up like that. It forces people to look at themselves, look into their own preconceptions and dogma and see if they can break their way through it. They loved his music before, but they don't like this? Can they be trust his artistic integrity and trust that he is a good artist like they thought before and spend some time with it? Or will they just dismiss it? Everything about what REN does seems calculated to make you introspect and self-reflect ❤️

For me- this is a song I won’t listen to past this weekend- it’s a dramatic purging art piece- it’s to be listened to a few times and enjoyed-or thought provoking- but I don’t go to the theatre to see it over and over again- all music has its place in the world- and this will be appreciated by me- and I will watch and comment and like- because it is good- Why won’t I listen to it over and over- because it is dark- and just the “kill” over and over and dark tone- appreciate and move on- Listening to this on repeat will do the reverse of a dark thoughts purge- it will cause brain pathways and change mood and thoughts dark- imagine watching Sweeney Todd over and over again- the brain chemistry will change- I truly believe this is art and can be appreciated- that’s why I will make the rounds and comment and like on videos this weekend- but then I will also probably listen to “Baretooth” I think I love myself afterwards each time- But that’s how I roll- I got Godsmacks “time bomb” blasting when I feel the need to just rage sing out some anger and get it out of my body (or Volbeats asshole in the room) and then when it’s expressed I need to find joy again and move on. So those who don’t want to hear this one on repeat- I get it- by try to appreciate it once or twice and give the love and then move on-

Had to look this one up, and it plays totally into the idea of being so angry that you even inflict pain on yourself. Who is Samsara? samsara, (Sanskrit: “flowing around”) in Indian philosophy, the central conception of metempsychosis: the soul, finding itself awash in the “sea of samsara,” strives to find release (moksha) from the bonds of its own past deeds (karma), which form part of the general web of which samsara is made

Just a quick comment for 26:57 (it's the secnod or third time you've run this line) - there's a really nice double entendre that you won't get if you're not familiar with British vernacular. "Killer on " can also refer to a police officer (copper / bobby) 'walking the beat' when they are on foot patrol so it can also be taken as him prowling the streets - it's a cool little extra

I love all the thoughts here, folks are really good at reading things. I think he tells you in the song what this is about. Samsara is the idea that things are circular with repeated birth, mundane existence and dying again, so everything has to die for you to be born again anew. Also as a masochist if you kill everything you love, it hurts. His lyrics are deep and I love the beat.

a thing is a lot of people who are in self destructive behaviors often end up pushing people away and "killing" their relationships, like lashing out whilst feeling withdrawals and the way you're hurting yourself with these substances to feel joy/keep going, people losing hope in you, burning bridges. ultimately you end up only hurting yourself more than anyone, a masochist.

The chorus reminds me of the end phrasing in Illest of our time.

This is Ren clearing out his mind of everything that does not propel him forward! It's got a good beat and hard lyrics and another example of Ren, the genius at work! 🎉❤

Great reaction, masochism is self pain of various types and a sadist is doing it to others!

Masochism isn't just a sexual orientation. Ren in this song sounds more like a sadist -- belligerent, angry, and taking it out on the world. But putting his darker side out in public could well be a masochistic act, particularly given the almost-certain reaction of fans who just want Ren to give them vibey feel-good music will have. I LOVE this track. His flow switches and rhyme schemes are phenomenal. Another banger!

I saw another reaction with a comment that made it make more sense to me. It could be seen that he's a masochist because he's killing everything that's there to try and help him.

As someone else pointed out (and I read it the same way) he says we're all masochists for allowing the old structures of society to control us the way they are. The whole system is broken and we need to start again. He says the same in "The Hunger" - "I raise my fist, the anti-capitalistic pissed I revel In society collapsing; Fantastic, now pump the treble"

Nicely picked up on Fight Club thing, BP; not sure if that was Ren's intention but It's a good analogy.

I think he referenced 'oh brother where art thou' with his coming to the river quote followed by the odyssey quote?

I know this is off topic but I saw your reactions to some of our country music in the south and would like to suggest that you hear The Thunder Rolls by Garth Brooks not really "rapper esch" but still a great song.

I like what you said about not looking too deep in to it and this being his hip hop moment. Judging by what Ren said on twitch you got it spot on. I am really enjoying the real hard and dirty rap
