Black River Campground, Ottawa National Forest, Lake Superior
The Two Tired Teachers stayed in the Black River Campground in the Ottawa National Forest on Lake Superior. The campground has 40 sites, and around half of those are first come sites. Because we were there over July 4 in 2023, we did have reservations for this campground. The pads at the campsites are fairly large and can accomodate large RVs. A bonus is the campsites them are roomy with foliage between the sites. The campground seems to have one centrally located vault toilet with a male and female side.
Black River Harbor has a recreation area that is on the river that flows into Lake Superior. There is a pedestrian suspension bridge that was built by the CCC in 1938 and 1939. It has places for boats to stop along a boardwalk. It has a swim and "beach" area. When we think of beaches, we think of sand. I guess that is not so in the UP (Upper Peninsula of Michigan). The beach on the Black River is full of driftwood. Instead of people building sand castles, the are building structures with driftwood.
Most of the trails in the area go to waterfalls. We hiked saw two or three waterfalls. One of the trails is accessible, but the others have many stairs.
Black River Campground is a place we would love to visit again, especially in the summer. While Teas was roasting with temperatures hovering around 110, the highs in the UP were at hot as in the 80s.
