Growing up, I had listened to this song probably thousands of times. Loved it. Then, that one time... that line "Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say if they knew you believed in God above"..... it hit me between the eyes like a ton of bricks... I cared more about what my friends thought of me than I did what God thought of me. One of the key moments of the journey God lead me through to salvation.

I've always said that Black Sabbath were like Old Testament prophets screaming about the end of the world. The thing is, they were a band for the people, and a lot of their music has something for everyone. If you don't like the message in After Forever? Check out God is Dead. If you're not a fan of drugs, like in Sweet Leaf, check out Hand of Doom which speaks about the dangers of drugs. You don't like the occult bent of songs like Black Sabbath? Maybe you'd dig the Sci-fi elements of Into the Void or Iron Man. You don't like little relatively filler songs like Tomorrow's Dream or Am I Going Insane? Dig on War Pigs, or Spiral Architect. You like fast, check out Symptom of the Universe. You like slow, check out the same song and wait about four minutes! You don't like Ozzy? Check out Dio. You don't like Dio, check out Tony Martin. You don't like Sabbath? You just haven't listened to enough.

Geezer Butler has said about the lyrics: ”A lot of it was because of the situation in Northern Ireland at the time. There were a lot of religious troubles between the Protestants against the Catholics. I was brought up strictly Catholic and I guess I was naive in thinking that religion shouldn’t be fought over. I always felt that God and Jesus wanted us to love each other. It was just a bad time in Northern Ireland, setting bombs off in England and such. We all believed in Jesus - and yet people were killing each other over it. To me it was just ridiculous. I thought that if God could see us killing each other in his name, he’d be disgusted.”

@Robert Vaughn NIB does not stand for Nativity in black. Bill Ward's beard reminded the rest of a pen NIB. The song is about the Devil falling in love with a mortal woman and changing back to good.
@rickschroeder3127

@Robert Vaughn this song, Satan falls in love with a human woman and tries to seduce her. He turns out to be very charming and the early lyrics are quite poetic. >> The title refers to drummer Bill Ward's beard. The band called him "Nibby" because they thought it looked like the nib on the end of a pen (Ozzy came up with the nickname when he on acid and thought Geezer Butler was turning into a fountain pen). Says Butler: Originally it was Nib, which was Bill's beard. When I wrote N.I.B., I couldn't think of a title for the song, so I just called it Nib, after Bill's beard. To make it more intriguing I put punctuation marks in there to make it N.I.B. By the time it got to America, they translated it to Nativity In Black.>>

Anybody that calls Black Sabbath satanic just hasn't listened to the songs. Even the songs from the point of view of Satan are about love and deceit. Humans being weak and susceptible to evil trickery. Ozzy routinely sounds terrified of the Devil when he sings about it. Which is a very Christian perspective.

when you say "raised Catholic" you mean "nominally Catholic, at best," right? Bill was the most superstitious and Geezer probably the most religious but even he had quit going to mass in his teens. Regardless, being raised in the western world it's pretty much a given that you'll have been associated with a christian religion as a child being "raised in a religion" means nothing unless you choose to continue letting religious beliefs continue to influence your decisions later in life.

I would tell them Black Sabbath was a Christian band and play them "After Forever" and "War Pigs". I also had an art book of Gothic christian paintings to show them. That reminded me of the video you reacted to that scared Sori, but you explained that the imagery was Orthodox Christian. Anyway, play more Sabbath and have a great New Year. ED

Sabbath wrote songs about the things they saw and felt most of the lyrics were written by Terry geezer butler and the topics were what they saw and dealt with growing up during that time period coming from a factory town and most of them poor they created the sound of sabbath themselves and you would be surprised to find Tony iommi cites his influences as the shadows and jango Reinhardt . They were a blues and jazz based band who discovered their sound by creating it using pioneering techniques and a diy attitude . Especially after Tony’s accident he had to completely change the way he played guitar and that helped shaped the sabbath sound .

Speaking as a US Citizen and an atheist theology has a place in public education as a study on how all religions effect human society. The problem has always been with certain Christian sects thinking the Bible should be the basis for not just education but for all aspects of living in the U.S. Your personal mythology or thoughts on supernatural belief should be just that. Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

This is the second time I’ve watched this video. It shocks me that Vin would say the lyrics were to simplistic for him. As a Christian he should know that salvation thru Jesus Christ was designed to be simple so that everyone could be saved.

Finally!!! Love you guys. I actually used the lyrics during a bible study with our youth group. Matched up with biblical texts then played the song. We had 20 very sheltered church kids banging heads and educated at the same time.

Riffs and Hooks made the music for most of the day. Riffs were concoctions mostly born from classical music blues and Cajun soul music. Main suspects were Tony Iommi Jimmy Page Jimi Hendrix Pete Townsend

Tony Naomi is missing the tips of his string fingers on his hand from a sheet metal accident when he was a kid. He wears metal thimbles which you could hear, scraping up and down the strings occasionally in different size.

Yep you're right. I think every song to come after Sabbath were influenced by Tony Iommi's riffs. If you listen to Seinfeld I'm sure you could hear a little Geezer Butler in those bass licks...

Man this guys are unbelievable, there's probably no other band in history more influential than Black Sabbath, where would we be without them... God bless them. Please react to "Nothing Is Not" by Morbid Angel and "In Their Darkened Shrines" by Nile.

Toni Iommi is the foundation upon which heavy metal was built. A lot of great music was released in 71' including the Iconic Led Zeppelin IV-but nothing comes close to matching the heaviness of Iommi's tone, Children Of The Grave is a testament to this, not to mention that this album begat Sludge, Stoner and Doom genre's all in one album.

That's exactly true. When you spawn a genre you can't help but be a genius. Tony Iommi is a force of nature with the power of his SG and Geezer Butler was the perfect foundation for Tony to stand on. I believe it took the two oif them to creat that power that changed music. The planets were in alignment, God was looking at the earth for a group of men to show his power to the Earth's youth and he found them.

Geezer butler was raised Irish catholic and still is and also liked to read about the occult and darker aspects of life ( old school Catholicism tends to be pretty dark and scary , my mother is German catholic ) it leads to a lot of great story content for heavy music , quick sabbath facts , Toni Iommi lost the tips of his fret hand fingers in a accident and used thimbles to protect his nubs and tuned down to C# to make it easier to play and really could only play two note bar chords which have become the rock and metal norm , the band name and direction came from a Boris Karloff film called Black Sabbath that was playing down the street from there house and they decided to take a dark heavy style to separate themselves from the hippie Blues based bands at the time , Ozzy only got the gig in sabbath because he had his own PA , sabbath and priest are both from the same town Birmingham and started about the same time - heavy metal was called acid rock then

Hyper Secularist Nazis??? Is it any wonder Christians get a bad rap when you come out with nonsense like that? It should be remembered that Ozzy was hoovering up Bolivian marching powder like it was going out of fashion at the time this was written. Just because a person sings something, it doesn't mean they actually believe it themselves.

Most of the prevalent bands of the 1970s grew up or were adolescents in the aftermath of post World War II Europe. So they grew up in households where there parents were used to doom and gloom death and destruction was everywhere.
