I remember dropping the needle on this album back in the day, and THIS song blared from the speakers - the opener on the album - and I couldn't believe the mountainous sound of thunder. Just floored. This was back in the day when you had NO CLUE what was on the album and hadn't heard any snippets of any songs, and hadn't read any reviews. You bought the album because you knew the gods who forged it - in this case, the mighty Ronnie James Dio from Rainbow had joined Sabbath (which was a great metal band with a douchebag vocalist up to that point) and now their way forward was forged in Olympus.

Yep. RJD was a major shot in the arm for Sabbath, at a time when they were really needing one. Those last 2 albums with Ozzy (Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die) were pretty forgettable. No dis on Ozzy, it just wasn’t clicking with that lineup anymore. RJD came along and really breathed new life into them. I saw them on this tour and again a year later with Vinnie Appice on drums. Both shows were f’n great. Ronnie’s voice couldn’t be touched. He was a real one of a kind. I couldn’t get into anything Sabbath did after he left.

@psyxech3408 I haven't read Ronnie’s autobiography but, that's the first time I've EVER heard that story. Back in the late 70's going into the 80's, it was known that Ronnie wanted to go solo after leaving Rainbow but his wife, Wendy, convinced him to hook up with Sabbath. She knew it would be a good stepping stone for the direction Ronnie wanted move in, in the first place. HEAVY! Rainbow was going more Pop with songs like "Long Live Rock 'n Roll". Ronnie saw what was coming with the NWOBHM and wanted to seize on that. But his wife didn't feel he was well established enough on his work with Rainbow alone. Joining Sabbath completely revitalized them AND gave Ronnie much needed exposure to the world. He was contracted for 3 albums. He did 'H&H' and 'TMR' then bailed out after Iommi released "Live Evil" without his approval on the final mix. Apparently Ronnie was unhappy with some of his performances that were used. Regardless, he was done with Black Sabbath and DIO was born, which carried him for nearly the next decade until he rejoined BS for "Dehumanizer". The man definitely has a long, lustrous history that all of us should be thankful for. RIP RJD ✌️💖

Underrated?? Where did that come from? This is one of Sabbath's most successful albums. Production, personnel, genre adaptation, everything is on point. Commercially is unquestionable - third most sold, only behind the Master of Reality and Paranoid. Bro, Heaven and Hell is one of the most acclaimed Heavy Metal concepts of all time.

RAINBOW RISING is one of my favorite album's the last time I saw was at RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL the HEAVN AND HELL tour my friend who went to the first SABBATH show with me said he had tickets for the show what a show that must have been about the six time we went to a SABBATH show not counting OZZY solo career. By '79, Sabbath were pretty much at the 'end the road' as far as the first ten Ozzy years went. Then, it turns into a "win-win" situation for everyone. Sabbath picks-up Ronnie Dio and Ozzy gets introduced to Rhoads after Sharon cleans Ozzy up a little and creates the Blizzard of Ozz. Both parties bounced-back with a vengeance in 1980. As did AC/DC that same year with Brian Johnson on the phenomenal "Back In Black" right after Bon Scott had just recently passed. I was a junior in high school then. What a year, man. 😎👍🏻

After two less than stellar albums like "Technical Ecstasy" and "Never Say Die!", "Heaven and Hell" was a much welcome relief to a band like Sabbath looking to reinvent themselves in The New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Times were changing, and the band needed to change with them. It worked out well for Ozzy too, with Blizzard and Diary climbing the charts.
