This show builds-up some excellent tension. I think the ending of this episode is one of my favorite Black Sails reactions of yours this far. Just how you really don't know what Flint is going to do. Really enjoyed the commentary to both the conflict between Flint and Vane (and how yes, everyone is assuming Vane is unchangeable), about the flashbacks and... Well, the problem with talking about an episode like this is that it's all build-up, and I can't talk about it all with its proper context without the result. Because there is just so much in here building up to whatever comes next, I mean it ends on a cliffhanger in almost every plot-thread, and I can't really say much about that, can I? Oh, and I wouldn't say necessarily that this show doesn't go with the reasonable choice, or that it always defies expectation. Rather, I think its writers knows how to write humans very well, and everyone in it is incredibly human, in everything they do. Eric's Flint impressions continues to be amazing, and everyone's joy at seeing Joji (the samurai pirate) as well as Randall makes me so happy. And I'm glad they were missing the presence of Silver! He didn't do much in this, but I have to say, his conversation with Flint and about how Flint is actually really concerned with how he's perceived is one of my favorite conversations in the entire show. I think that theme goes back all the way to episode 1 where the Captain of the Scarborough talks about how society is held together by shame. And I'm glad that they made the parallel back to what Miranda was telling James in the flashback. The conversation with Alfred Hamilton is definitely one of the most *tense* moments in the entire show. I can definitely relate to that feeling, though obviously not in this context, but of being over at a friend's house, and suddenly they're arguing with their parents over dinner and it's just... the tensest thing ever. And they definitely got that dread across here. And James asking Alfred Hamilton to leave his own house, again, one of my favorite moments. Other than that, I can't say I have much to say about this episode. We're left with so many plot-threads having at what feels like the cusp of... something. Flint and the fort. Billy being back. Eleanor and her dad. Jack, Anne and Max. Miranda finding out about Abigail Ashe. The flashback as well. Overall, this episode I think can be best described as "the calm before the storm", with how it builds up to that final line - "Fire". Obviously, having said that, I have to end with: Can't wait until next week.

I don't agree that the show goes against reason. I think it's quite the opposite, even.

I don't think Vane really hinered or actively threatened anybody from his position. Last episode he took over and wanted to just take the position hornigold had priorly. He wasn't really threatening anybody after that but actually took part in eleanors business and some of the captains working under her apparently even used his name to threaten their enemies. So everybody but hornigold had been profiting from that change in pour before. Now however Flint is back and this whole thing is just a personal rivalry between the two. Vane doesn't threaten anybody else, but because those two can't get along of course there is a good chance, that Vane will try to take the gold from Flint - both Vane and Flint talked about that posibility. I mean before the whole Max-thing they did make a deal to take the gold together, but that fell apart because of Eleanor. Now it's really only Hornigold and Flint who want VAne out of the fort. Flint because of a personal rivalry/distrust against Vane and Hornigold because he wants his fort back. All the others really don't care that much about Vane. Like Scott said, he doesn't like Vane, but Vane in the Fort is a lesser evil compared to attacking and destroying it. But then the alliance with Hornigold would of course fall apart.
