The interesting thing about Silver's tactic is he didn't really rat anyone out, he just reported what happened. The guilty ratted themself out when they would approach to punch silver. The way he says "That shall remain nameless." the third time always makes me laugh since he probably knows this is the one that'll make things come to a head if they rat themselves out.

Dufresne's actor didn't actually died between seasons, his condition just got worse so he had to stop working to get treatment. He died two years later.

I consider myself pretty desensitized to violence, but that beheading was the most perverse, scariest things I've ever seen, and you don't even see it explicitly get cut off. And yes, he purposely used that knife to slowly cut his head off. He is one of the scariest villains in tv, in my opinion.

You spoke about Flint and Silver being so different but working well. In the flashback Thomas also spoke about "unlikely pairs" accomplishing great things. This was also drawing a contrast between Silver and Flint. This episode is where Flint was cemented as one of the best protagonist I've watched. It also highlights the power of a name and the flag, the reality is the crew need a captain who is feared. Dufresne wouldn't have lasted very long anyway so Flint probably saved his life lol Also.....you had one job Vane....one job!!

That whole scene where Flint tricks then made into trying to take a prize is one of my favorites because it’s illustrates one of the biggest themes in this show and that’s a name, only a few pirates have sense of dread attached to their name that inspires fear Flint, Vane, one who’s name will grow, and another who hasn’t appeared yet

I love how much we all praise the show for its excellent characters and writing and dialogue... while totally ignoring how funny it is that every single episode is pushing the envelope on how much a TV show can gross Nikki out.

One of my fave episodes of this entire series! 23:14 My fave piece of dialogue in the whole show, Captain Flint schooling Silver on what it truly takes to be a Pirate Captain, the subtleties and nuances of chasing down a prize, the clever way Flint is narrating the whole strategy still gives me goosebumps. 24:06 Not sure if you're aware but that Flag is specific to Captain Flint which is why that other captain knew who's crew it was and how important it was for the other ship to be destroyed so that Flag still holds that fear, dread and respect in the high seas. 25:38 "Flint Out", _drops the mic and walks away._ 28:16 True that Steven, more like 5D Chess haha 29:49 Contrary to popular belief and even pop culture/films, Pirate Crews are democracies where the most important decisions are put to a vote but it can be unstable at times which is why there needs to be a good solid leadership structure from the Captain, 1st Mate, Quartermaster etc to maintain that stability. Still so surreal you're both reacting to my 1 of fave TV shows ever, anyways onto XI.

They did build full size ships (or whatever was needed) as sets but they were never in the ocean I think they used a dry dock to film and/or giant pools. Way too dangerous to have these ships out in the open water Another amazing episode! I love how they describe Flint in the flashbacks

So, I don't know if anyone already informed you of this, but Billy is played by the actor who also played Dickon Tarly in Game of Thrones and Captain Low (the crazy captain) is played by the actor who also played One-Eye in Vikings. The actor is actually blind from one eye and uses that to his benefit to land roles like these.

I think they probably had a different direction for Dufresne but had to change course because of his unfortunate passing, so the sudden change in how he behaves makes sense.

This might just be me but (even though I’m not that big a fan of pirate stories in general) I absolutely love it when they do the pirate stuff and shout and repeat across the ship, like the „guncrews at the ready!“>“guncrews at the ready!“ „Fire!“>“fire!“ I always end up shouting it too when I rewatch ^^

Same happened with the lead actor from Spartacus. After season one he passed away from cancer I believe. The second season was then made a prequel to allow the producers proper time to recast. So seasons 3 and 4 are with a different actor playing Spartacus

Has a single show ever had such a bounty of fantastic characters? Flint and Silver, so different from each other, so intelligent and cunning in their own way. Witty Jack, also no grouch in the smarts department. Brains and ruthlessness are the super powers in this show. And unlike the sadistic and frightening sociopath Ned Lowe Flint, Silver, Jack Rackham show us a humanity that makes an audience able to root for them.

I love how Steve keeps glancing at Nikki, but they're both super focused on the show. That's exactly how I watch stuff I'm engaged in, and this show is worth it. Black Sails is about to take off like a rocket; it goes from good to GOAT.

The way I see it, Dufresne didn't fail because of Flint; He was just put in a position to fail because of Flint. Dufresne didn't have what it took to lead as well as Flint, but more importantly he didn't have Flint's reputation - The first ship the crew raided with Dufresne as captain would've failed. Flint just made sure it happened sooner, rather than later, so he could control the situation.

Don't worry, after this episode Flint starts to mellow out a bit. He'll start becoming less and less angry and ruthless from now on. Season 2 episode 2 in fact is the point of absolute peak Flint rage and ruthlessness.

After Black Sails you should check out Hell on Wheels. It tells the story of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad across the old West. It has great plot lines, awesome character development, and one of the best villains I've seen.

I love that show!!! I’ve watched it all twice. Also a really great main character, Bohanan is a boss for real. It’s pretty underrated, in my all-time top ten! I’m pretty happy right now the way it is, as Black Sails is my number one :). I’ve never seen anyone react to Hell on Wheels though. I also know they would love The Last Kingdom. Way better than Vikings!

Spoilers, spoilers, spoilers. It also does a great job of highlighting how someone can't just be brutal to survive in this world, they have to be brutal AND smart. Lowe had the violence down but none of the brains. Honestly, characters like Lowe get boring to me very quickly because all they have going for them is being psycho and violent. I loved that they took him out early on before he got tiresome (like Ramsey Bolton on GOT did).

They used real ships, shot off the coast of South Africa. Other Starz period pieces like Outlander have used the same ships. I do not believe that as many of the ship shots are fake as you may think, Nikki, though I can see why. Using big, beautiful, expensive and utterly impractical sailing vessels like this to make a TV drama is extra extra.

see the thing is, Flint is not doing reverse psychology really, he is telling people exactly what will happen and telling them the decisions they will have to make, he knows what it takes and he knows who can or cannot do it.

To clarify, Dufresne's actor didn't die between seasons. He was recast so he could undergo treatment for his brain cancer and died several years later in 2016. Still equally tragic, but it was a decision all involved in the show made together.

Max is a favorite character of mine, but here, she is acting like a douche. The only reason she is alive is because of Jack. Jack and Anne Bonny are two f*cked up co-dependents. I believe Silver would be more like Littlefinger than Flint.

Littlefinger has Flint's anger over past wrongs done to him that fuels his ruthlessness. However, Flint is much more into direct action than Littlefinger was. Silver shares Littlefinger's behind-the-scenes opportunism but does not have that grand ambition and just wants to get rich and live to enjoy it.

Flint is a microcosm of the British Empire that he so despises. He simply thinks of people as expendable to his own ambitions. The machiavellian ruthlessness and force of will can be considered magnificent, but the old world colonialism has brought horror to the world that has yet to be resolved.
