I watched the real Superbowl X with my dad. We bet a Big Mac. I chose the Steelers and won. A Big Mac in 1977 was $1.10. I thought I was the king of the world for beating my dad. I remember I was 9 years old and it was a big burger to me back then. My dad is still alive but we haven't seen each other or talked in almost 21 years. I just wanna remember that time and let things be as they are.

While John Frankenheimer is a legend, this is a film that would genuinely be great for a remake, lot of themes and plot elements would be put into an entirely different light nowadays and make the motives of the villains more intriguingly grey-area.

This movie was a perfect example of the plight of Viet-Nam veterans in the 1970s. They fought in the war only to come home and see themselve portrayed as battle scarred maniacs(Bruce Dern's character is a psychotic pilot in this movie) in movies, tv shows and even comic books instead of the American heroes many of them were in real life. It wasnt until the early 80s when our veterans were finally accorded the respect and gratitude they earned.

Any time a Vietnam vet showed up in a movie or TV show, you knew they were going to be crazy and most likely the bad guy or manipulated into being the bad guy because he thought he was still in Vietnam. First Blood is the first time I remember seeing a Vietnam vet treated with some respect.
@towringer

You're right. In the '70's there were all these images of the crazed Vietnam vet/US Army deserter. In the film Rolling Thunder and in at least one episode of SWAT and WKRP In Cincinnati.
@DEP717

@@tphillips37 Well said. I remember "Magnum, P.I." was huge, too. Magnum, T.C. and Rick were all Vietnam Vets and decent, well-adjusted people. A.J. on "Simon and Simon" was another one. Things changed, but it was literally night and day between the Late 1970s portrayals and the ones in the 1980s. "First Blood" was probably the turning point, like you said. It was brilliant in taking that stereotype, then completely inverting it. Stallone deserved Best Actor Oscar for the final ten minutes of the movie.

The very quick Moment at 0:36 is actually excited family members running out of the sidelines, to celebrate the Pittsburgh Steelers victory in the 1976 superbowl. They used that footage for the chaos, though it was the complete opposite emotion in real life! : ) Another quick shot at 0:04 when everybody in the stadium stands up, that was also from real life, when before the real game, the announcer said "Please rise for our national anthem."

Part of the agreement with Goodyear. The filmmakers received permission to use the name, and the blimp fleet, in the film, but they were barred from using it on posters or promotional materials. According to lore, when they were meeting with Goodyear representatives about using the name in the film, they said even if they didn't get permission, they were going to get a blimp, paint it silver, and everyone would associate it with the Goodyear blimp anyway. Apparently, the negotiation tactic worked. I give credit to Goodyear for agreeing to let them use their blimps and name. It adds a level of realism to the film that would be missed if the blimp were just generic and silver.
