Black & White Cityscape Photography in Manchester

Photography doesn't have to be overly complicated and in this video we'll be using just one lens, and some simple settings photographing Manchester to create some commercially sellable prints. Easy black and white photography in Manchester City Centre.

I’d say a bloody good haul Dave. Manchester at night has been on my list for too long so this film has just given me another kick to get out into town one evening !! So many cracking images in so short a time compared to the landscapes and as you said probably a much higher chance of print sales too. Great to watch and follow the trip around town 👍🏻👍🏻

Joanna and I were watching this video together (which honestly she never does) and all of a sudden she says "hey, there you are!". That was a bit of a surprise!! Thanks for calling my video oit mate, really appreciate that! I really enjoyed this! Not only for my affinity for Manchester, but for the images that you captured! Super crisp and sharp and some really nice city compositions! Made me miss my days of train long exposures in Florida! I would think any one of these images are very sellable, as you said, to local businesses there! Now get cracking on those corner pubs before they all disappear and replaced with a Wetherspoons! 😂 Great video and images my friend, definitely a great watch! Thanks again and chat soon!

Thanks mate - haha, I was going to message you to let you know that I was ripping some of your footage but I thought it'd be a nice surprise when you watched!!!....I wish I'd not cut the last line out though 'well worth a watch.......and that's snow joke!' but I cringed at my cheesiness in the edit so I cut it, but left the snow footage in haha no context snow!

Fantastic images Dave on two fronts. One, they were superb images, going black and white at night and resisting the temptation to go colour resulted in some really classy shots. And two, the shots around Deansgate brought back some memories of some great nights out with my best mate from school when he was studying at Salford Uni in the late 90s/early '00s. Walking home to his uni halls of residence after Julies Rock Club kicked out at 2am, we never had any bother. In fact I spent New Year in Manchester seeing the Millenium in - amazing night. Happy days.

Ah mate, Jillys Rock World was the absolute best club in Manc. I was using my fake id to get in there in the mid ‘90’s…..why the early night though 😂 that place would let you keep rocking till dawn 🤣 shame when it closed down. And I was in the Aussie bar on Deansgate Millenium night myself. Good times! Thanks for the kudos mate appreciate it - I’m actually writing this whilst down Deansgate again (a bit further down) doing a second night of shots. 40 minutes in and 4 more in the bag 😃 Thanks for checking it out mate, appreciate it

Some great images ya got in the city. Another place I haven’t been out to yet shooting. Saw Paul’s video too. It’s great thing todo and I’m sure in small towns would be a great hit as well as I’m sure they would want to support the photographers business.

Cheers mate. I tried to get the gift shop at Tittersworth Reservoir to sell some of my prints, met up with one of the managers there, but they had another photographer from Leek and because I'm in Manchester, they said they were going to go with the 'local'. I can't complain about that, backs up the theory about supporting the locals in smaller towns.

"A huge market for Manchester cityscapes" There may well be, but no photo could pay me well enough to set foot in Manchester with a camera, especially at night!

Superb Dave, really enjoyed that. Some brilliant,long expo images, definitely a good haul in such a short time. I’m like you, dont have enough Manchester Cityscapes when only 15 mins on the train from me, just a few of Castlefield. Off to watch Paul’s vlog now.😃👍

Thanks mate, yeah exactly the same, the lure of the PD wins vs the grit of the city every time. I'm definitely making more of an effort this year. Your canvas looked great in the gallery btw.

Cracking shots Dave, well worth the time spent, I shall now have a wander into the bustling metropolis that is Evesham to see what presents itself. First place I thought of is the station - close as we get to trams around here 😂.

Once again Dave, as so often happens - we seem to have chosen similar topics for our videos this week! I do quite like city photography, but not keen on doing my own video as I'm wary of leaving my video camera lying around while I'm concentrating on a shot. Totally agree about taking less time though. I wasn't able to get out last weekend, so just popped out in the evening after work for a couple of hours. Great images as always - my fave was the one at 7:19. Also, did I see the staircase image somewhere else with a creative treatment applied?

It's definitely the filming side of things that make me dislike it. Like you mention, once you start filming, there's more equipment, more distraction etc....I'm too used to just chucking my bag down in the landscape and leaving it there for 10 minutes whilst I wander around the area. You're right about the staircase, the 'creative' version is the final one that I was going for, I just didn't think it fit into this video well so went with the 'Lightroom' edit. Thanks mate appreciate it

Great video , great shots, not something I would be comfortable in doing myself. I am a Mancunian and know exactly where he was taking these shots, I would never take a camera into this place at night. NOT SAFE... How sad is that, my own City. Comments please.

Yeah the city centre aint my fave location for photography, got to be aware of everything and everybody around at all times. In a twist, I actually felt easier about this shoot than I do during daylight hours - much fewer people around meant it was a bit easier to be aware of my surroundings. The fact that I was carrying my big ass Manfroto tripod around like it was a truncheon probably helped keep people clear too!!!
