There are lots of basic skills packed into this seemingly simple heart hook project. Drawing out, splitting, scrolling, punching and cutting off. That makes this an excellent beginning blacksmithing project.

I was supposed to make some coat hooks for the wife today and will definitely be doing so tomorrow. Glad I got to busy today because I think she will like these heart hooks better. Thanks for the tip! 😁

Oh Boy. I found your channel again. I had subscribed to you a few years ago but, when I upgraded my cell, I lost a lot of content including your channel. I've truly enjoyed watching you fabricate that Heart Hook. Watching this video took me back to when I had metal shop in the 7th grade in 1957. Thanks for sharing another fantastic video with us.

I've spent my morning so far researching, again, induction forges, so this was a timely reminder that I need to stop dithering and buy one. Thanks!

Always excellent content John. I am going to try and get some hooks made for displaying a muzzleloader and a couple of antique fly rods. Your hook series makes me thing that I can do that. Now all I have to do is light the forge and get with it! Thanks for you excellent videos.

Hi John do you use a shaprened hot cut? Ive seen flat tipped and sharpened and I wondered what your take on them is thanks for sharing
@BlackBearForgeII
@BlackBearForgeII 6 ай бұрын
I do sharpen them, but not as sharp as a wood working tool

@@BlackBearForgeII I think I will try the flat tip and see what its like, I've always used sharp hot cuts and then either wiggled the end off (nice and safe) , or hammered off to the side to knock out the last little bit (usually losing the hot end in the shop somewhere)

What is the best material to start making chisels with? And can I use mild steel for like a temporary chisel? Well I got punch like a drift or something like something small and is there anything I can make out of a horseshoe like a hook ? And I have a Farriers anvil, but the horn is flat and there’s a big hole in it. It is called the NC standard anvil.

you can technically cut hot steel with a mild steel chisel; cold steel is harder than hot steel. But once your workpiece cools to a dull red that's going to destroy a mild steel chisel really quick. Coil springs or old files are good scrap material for chisels. Or buy some new 1045 or 4140.

What stock did you use for the heart hook? It looks like 3/4 x 1/4.

I need to share my sadness: I just chipped my pritchel hole with a holdfast. I mean I know an anvil is meant to be used, but still, chipping that perfectly good and round pritchel hole hurts.
