This is my 500mi (600+ mi now) review of the Leaperkim Veteran Sherman S EUC. In my opinion, this is the ultimate street cruiser wheel, and we will be discussing its overall place in the EUC market and what gear a new "big wheel" rider should look into getting before they start ripping it at high speeds.

Great video! I just crossed 800 miles on my Sherman S and i dont think i ever went above 38mph. Such a comfy cruise and it feels really powerful for a 100 volt wheel imo. Love that i can take this at long exploration trips and easily take off road paths here and there as well! I always keep a small bottle of tire slime in my backpack for use if i ever have bad luck with a flat tire on a trip.

I'd like to add something concerning body armor. You may not be as protected as you think you are. I recently had my first fall on my ShermS. Since I was only going 16 mph I couldn't understand why I had such bruising on my knees and elbows. I expected some but nothing like I had. So I did some investigating. If you have the Leatt Dual-Axis knee guard like I did, reach inside, there is a pocket, and feel around for the armor that is protecting you. In my pair it was about the size of four postage stamps. Nothing like I was expecting. So I ordered a set of gel body armor from Sas-Tec and slipped a pad into each knee pocket leaving what was already there intact. I did the same for the elbow pads but realized due to my bendy parts I had to remove their foam pad. A week ago I was navigating a terrible sidewalk and fell down - again on my knees and elbows. I didn't feel a thing. Where you can add armor do so. I was able to replace the armor on my Leatt shoulder pads and they are larger and more comfortable. I could put two pads there and may well do so. The bottom line is don't blindly trust your protection. Get it and inspect it and replace or add to it if necessary. I even wear a small pad in my shoes that protects my inner shin as the Leatt's don't come down far enough. I'm tall and the best part is I never feel the pad (armor) after about two minutes. You think you're tough until you realize you aren't. Hard lesson.

SPOT ON!!!!! (SUB) I have a motorcycle background, i still ride both bikes (GSXR600 & Concourse 1400) The level of concentration needed maintaining traffic speeds, watching for other cars, potholes, slick surfaces and high winds just to enjoy the ride can take some of the fun out of riding. EUC's allow me to go much slower and take in the beautiful surrounding without most of the dangers associated in keeping up with traffic on a motor bike. I love my SS and my V11/V8s before that. Now with 2600 miles on my sherman-s carring 250lbs even riding in deep waters on rain out trails or very steep seated off-road hill climbing im so very impressed with this wheel, and i still get over 80 miles of range, not a single issue. I almost went with the V13 but so glad i switch my dep over to the SS. IT REALLY IS A GREAT ALL-AROUND WHEEL!!😇
@BlackhartFilms
@BlackhartFilms Жыл бұрын
Coming from the V11, the V13 seemed like a no brainer. I'd picked my V11 over other beginner wheels like the S18 due to Inmotion's reputation of quality, water rating, etc... and the V13 was tempting to have more of the same, but the V13 just ultimately made no sense. Not enough range or torque, way too heavy and high centre of gravity for that weight... zero regrets about going SS over V13, and still going strong. I do wonder about the vocal minority of daredevil riders in the community that just want more and more speed. The point of a onewheel or EUC for me is that it gets me outside on bike trails or woods. From a bike or car on the street you lose so much of that connection to being outside. Floating and cruising and exploring like an even more nimble ADV that is still small enough and low profile enough to walk into a shop without people getting too weird about it... that's the benefit of EUC to me, and I feel like sometimes people lose perspective of the point of an EUC. I think we are hitting the peak limit of what performance a wheel should have, and now the focus should be on improving range, build quality, comfort, etc... to improve the user experience.

Thank you for this video. I really liked you going over the speed stats. I'm fairly new and currently riding a V12HT. I've only got about 600 miles so far, mostly on trails and such. Lately as I've become more comfortable I've been using it to do a bit more commuting, I've been wanting a bit more speed so when I'm forced to use the road I can do so safely. We have a lot of 45 mph roads that go through town, and it would be nice to not get ran over and also not have to take always take long detours. I think next year I'll pick up the Sherman S, because everything you went over and what others have said will work well for my use case. The gear talk was great too!

I’d totally get an S over a Patton just due to the range and stability, but I can’t exactly afford something like that being a college student only being able to make monthly payments on a wheel. I’m obsessed with the feeling so I want something that’ll last, and the Patton seems like it’s been through it’s batches. I’m waiting for the wheel with such excitement but man, if I get a great job and get a second wheel this is it. I hate driving cars now that I’ve been able to get through my town’s traffic with ease. Your video felt like you spoke for all riders very well. Even though I’m a speed demon myself I simply want something that works and is safe. Thank you for this masterpiece

@@MGRodriguez1 Yeah, I get why the 96 lbs on the Sherman S might raise eyebrows. Personally, I'm mostly cruising on streets, so the weight isn't a biggie since it means more juice in those batteries for longer rides. While the Patton seems ready to tackle off-road with its lighter build and strong motor, the Sherman S is like a Swiss Army knife since it’s good at everything amazing at nothing (besides build quality). It might not be a hardcore off-roader, but I bet it can handle some rough patches. Plus, that extra range on the S is a win for me over the 7-pound difference. It's like choosing between a specialist and an all-rounder, think I'm team Sherman s if only begode had better quality control

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy high ROI tinkering - BUT, I also appreciate best-ish in class adjustable suspension out of the box VS multiple half day teardown and reassembly jobs to test, tweak, test, tweak, test...... etc.

Great review and awesome points. I just got the patton because I am a smaller guy and love it so far. I do think 100v is perfectly sufficient, but also see the benefit of the 126+ voltages. Not so much for speed and headroom, but really feel the better responsiveness for braking and getting out of trouble riding around nyc.

Great review. But I still think that higher voltage makes sense. It has better acceleration and what is much more important - better breaking. And you do not have to use the crazy torque if you do not want to. In my opinion EX30 is better street cruiser - lower center of gravity and also good suspension. I know a guy who bought EX30 (he also had V11 before) and he loves it so much.

The EUC world stats is very interesting. I'd say most people with these wheels are in cities and can't usually push the higher speeds. I know here in NYC you can push 40mph for a few seconds, but then need to slow down to a stop for a red light or a stopped car nearly every 100 feet.

In North America its super difficult to find good rideable areas. Some places are better than others, but we really don't have the pedestrian and cycle infrastructure that you can find in other parts of the world. Which puts us in this weird spot of having to deal with aggressive infrastructure that has us straddling the line between pedestrian sidewalks and fighting traffic. I spent 3mo up in Long Island for work last winter, took my V11 at that time and rode a lot in Brooklyn, Queens, little bit in Manhattan and Central Park... def agree that dodging traffic really slows things down, and keeps you on your toes. I have also seen some of the crazy vids of people trying to ride like the Queens Expressway too, and stuff like that I am a little worried will lead to more regulation and potential injuries or death of riders and others. Its an interesting balance to strike between performance and safety, and the realities of our current infrastructure and driver mentality around small vehicles and pedestrians. Even motorcycles and bicycles really struggle in our modern environments.

I need to try out a Master more long term, I've tried a friend's a few times around the block but not long enough to make a full opinion. Overall I found it stable, and smooth with the adjustments he made to the linkage and shock, but even less nimble than the Sherman S. Also, if you need 1200Wh more to make it about the same range... that's pretty rough. Kinda my point on liking the 100V system compromise Leaperkim made. 100V runs cooler, and you trade less of that range for speed. Sherman S isn't necessarily the fastest off the line, but its fast enough, and I get a lighter wheel that can actually go further than a lot of the other wheels that are heavier than it like V13, Master Pro, EX30, etc...

I found CROCS saddles to be great for gripping the pedals. Not the house slippers/clogs style of Crocs btw. I've got a friend from who Rides the withlacooche state trail from one to the other. 46 mile bicycle trail. Gulf Trailhead to Dade City Trailhead. She has the Veteran Sherman Max I believe, no suspension. When she reaches Dade City, she rides into Dade City to recharge a little, eat, drink, relax at a park. She likes to show off her EUC to people. I ran into her and she let me Ride it. I'm a Total noob to eucs. I'm hooked. I want to trail ride long distances. Sight see. She lives near the north trailhead on the withlacooche trail. She lets me know when she is riding down. So I can ride it and practice. Her husband drives down in his truck in case she wants a ride back, but she usually EUC it back home. Only time I seen her ride the truck home, it was a 100°F day in the shade. She got heat exhaustion & dehydration that day. Her husband can't ride eucs due to a balance issue from his Military days. I'll tell her about your channel and the Orlando EUC community, just in case she doesn't know about them already. She wants me to get a EUC. So I can ride up to her and we can ride back here, then she can back alone. Me, I just want a Long Range electric vehicle that make it both ways at around 15-25 mph. It's a 92 mile trail both ways. 46 one way. Anyways. Shermans are GREAT 🤘

On your speed/safety discussion... I just upgraded form a 16X to a Patton with street tire... for mostly bike path and street riding. I'm a pretty tame rider speed wise, even more so than you. I look at it like this... multiuse bike paths are restricted to Class 2 electric bicycles, roads to Class 3. IOW, 20mph and 28mph respectively. Some would argue that we are in an unrestricted "gray area"... and they probably aren't wrong. However... I like to play it safe and at least look like I'm maintaining something close-ish to those parameters. The times that I have been stopped and questioned... it seemed to help that I knew the rules and was able to show an intention to follow them ie. a speed alarm set for 28mph... All that said... around those speed parameters even the Patton has plenty of battery for me. It's a pretty rare occasion that I plan on exceeding 50 miles.

The e-rides spiked pedals are a game changer. I use Forma low adventure motorcycle boots with the SS for ankle protection from the high pedals. (Kinetic DLs for my non-spike wheels.)
@BlackhartFilms
@BlackhartFilms Жыл бұрын
I've heard very good things about those pedals, and the Nylones as well. The stock SS pedals are a weird choice, not the best design at all, my point was mostly that I think some of the issues other reviewers had early on were partially down to shoe choice, and I wanted to start a conversation about picking a good shoe and particularly a good sole to engage with pedals while riding EUC. The Forma and other ADV style boots that are designed for offroading and mountain hiking look like better choices than moto sport boots. They actually have a knobby tread on the sole which gives more places for the spikes to actually grab and get stuck between to help you stick to your footplates. Jon Purcell and a few other reviewers appeared to have had flat smooth boot soles, similar to my winter boots, and those really don't grab spikes super well, and are a potential liability IMO. I'm looking at replacing my winter boots next season with something that's got a deeper tread that will grab. The Forma boots do look very nice, I like the buckles to make getting them on easier.

The smooth motorcycle boots are usually for racing, because it's a drag racing technique to keep both feet on the ground and drag them on the ground during takeoff for maximum stability. Cruiser and Adventure style boots tend to have more tread since those people aren't focused on racing, but the material is still hard (not grippy) since they're meant to hold up under contact during high speed.
@BlackhartFilms
@BlackhartFilms 11 ай бұрын
Absolutely; I understand the value in a good moto boot when its used in the correct context. I wear a pair of Sedici Forza boots when riding my bike, but I don't wear those for riding my EUC. There's nothing wrong with moto boots, good quality moto boots are excellent protection in the right context... but you have to pick the right clothes for the job. My main point was that the stock pedals aren't amazing, but also that grip isn't just a function of the pedal but also of the contact with your shoes. The wrong shoes won't really give you enough bite no matter the pedal design, because they're not made for it. Moto boots are generally stiff and hard because they're designed to slide. That design principle is basically the opposite of what you generally want with an EUC pedal, which is something that is grippy and will bite so that you feel secure and connected with the wheel.

I don’t believe in speed limitations. It should be the riders prerogative to heighten their risk, not the companies. With every form of transportation, speed is a evolutionary process that should be celebrated. In my opinion, slamming speed takes away from the accountability of the rider. It’s akin to weapon laws. It’s not the weapon, but the person controlling it.

Do recommend sherman S for new riders to buy right away as their first wheel? I feel like I don't want to waste money on a starter wheel and I then get bored out of it quickly. I have done that before with my first motorcycle and within 3 month I out grown it and needed 600cc 😂
@BlackhartFilms
@BlackhartFilms Жыл бұрын
That's a more difficult one. The weight of the wheel is a big factor, you will be developing new muscles you haven't used before. I think the Sherman is potentially too large a wheel to start with comfortably. You could do it, but it would be like starting to ride on a 1000CC heavy monster that you are scared to drop. I started on a V11 and even that felt heavy at first and it took me about 8months to hit the point where I was constantly riding beeps and feeling like the wheel was holding me back. If you have a friend with a wheel you could learn on before pulling the trigger that would be ideal, if not just be aware that it is a really heavy wheel and it would be like learning to weight lift by grabbing big plates and only being able to do 1 rep at a time instead of starting small and doing lots of reps to work up.

That sounds like a bit of a safety concern honestly. If I come to a stop, I need to be able to put a foot down, and if I crash I don't want 95lbs of fast moving wheel pulling on my ankles. Jump pads do a good job locking you in while still being able to escape when needed.
@markifi
@markifi Жыл бұрын
maybe@@BlackhartFilms it's almost never a concern on the bike as those pedals can rotate and you will 99% fall out of them in a crash while being very secure in the pedal under any other circumstance, but with pedals that aren't able to rotate it might be sketchy. i think it'd need to be coupled with a particularly slippery pedal to work. after all in a crash when you go over an obstacle, the entire wheel rotates forwards and you're still free to fall out of the pedals, but you fall upwards while rotating in the air. but if you ever experienced the security of those straps you strive for that level with all other pedals

Can't really measure rider experience in just days or months riding. A rider with 5 years experience who only does short rides once a week isn't the same thing as someone with 1 year experience who rides almost daily and does long rides. Same thing with like, going to the gym, or learning a new language... if you do a tiny bit over years, your skill will not be at the same level as someone who's more dedicated even over a shorter time. Lets go back to EUC world stats- EUC world lists 10720 users, and the KS18 is the most used wheel with 11.07%. That's 1186.7 wheels. The KS18 is by total distance in EUC world has 344041mi. That means in 2022, the average rider only rode ~290 miles. Now, to compare against a wheel with more range, the Veteran Sherman, that's 6.74%, approx 722.5 wheels, an average of 694.5 mi last year. I ride about 600mi a month. By mileage, I have many years of experience compared to the average EUC rider.

Motorcycle boots work fine on other brand spike/grip tape pedals. The problem is the Sherman S stock pedals. They are garbage.

Sandpaper tape kinda works for anything until it doesn't- as soon as you encounter some sand, mud, or snow and the grip clogs you're sliding around. Until then, I'd agree any shoe is fine on tape. I have eRides pedals on an RS19 and had Hex Pedals on my V11. The grip with those spikes on my moto boots I'll admit was marginally better, but I could pretty easily slide my feet around if I tried, which doesn't give a lot of confidence that in an emergency brake anything but my jump pads would hold me in place. The stock Sherman S pedals aren't great. I'd like to be able to customize or replace my spikes, the tips are kinda fat and rounded, that lip is dumb... But with good shoes you can actually ride them just fine without risk of slipping off. If you're gonna pick a boot for EUC I'd just recommend finding maybe an ADV boot with knobby soles, or a street wear low profile boot that has a good pattern. Just something with more surfaces to bite pedals, not something slick soled.

@@BlackhartFilms I agree with what you said there. About ADV boot, they should be fine, but get leather or at least heavy duty looking boots. Regular shoe fabric will just get disintegrate into nothing on a crash if you go 40km/h+
