My thoughts on the Blackhawk Serpa holster. In this video, I'm not trying to come off as condescending, and I hope no one takes it as such. Also, I do not claim to be a professional. I'm simply trying to stress the importance of firearm safety, and proper training.

I saw a few videos "dogging" the holster too, and one had over 80,000 views, so I made a video, much like yours because it seemed like biased attacks more then "safety" warnings. I've had mine for 6 years now and honestly can't imagine going to a different open carry holster! I did a stint as a Marine Pistol range SNCOIC and Safety officer and while you may not consider yourself a "professional", one could think that your observations and mine were made by the same person, and I was a "professional". i have two holsters that i use.... i don't have a problem with them. i actually love the fact that my firearm is locked in and no one can snatch my firearm out of the holster. your presentation was on point.

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for making the point, which I'll add to here; People have been drawing and rarely but occasionally shooting themselves in the leg for a hundred + damn years prior to Serpa retention or hard polymer holsters. Just because it's leather or some other design doesn't mean that we can be careless in our training......Hooking the bugger finger while "clearing leather" would cause the same result. Sick of people blaming equipment for failure to practice/perform. In a nutshell, not a lot different than blaming a 30 rd magazine for a mass shooting.

Dry training is just as important as hot training. Had he practiced at home prior to going to the range, he could've assessed the issues with the draw and developed a better technique that worked for him. You should always test out holsters that are new to you, I wasn't comfortable with the holster when I first got it because of the idea of using my trigger finger, but after a few hours of practice, I realized that if you do it right, you shouldn't need a lot of finger pressure to disengage the lock.

I got a Serpa a couple days ago. Yes I had to train on it because when I grip a firearm I place my index finger very high, up towards the ejection port. It was easy to convert. I'm really liking the Serpa . Great video

Two points to remember with the SERPA holster: 1) never disengage the safety until the pistol is out of the holster and pointed down range. 2) never press the release mechanism - instead rest your finger across it and keep your index finger straight. Negligent discharges occur when the finger curls inward trying to press the release mechanism - mostly with a single action pistol off safety or a striker fired pistol.

Exactly. Accidents DO happen, but to say that accidents only happen with one holster and not others is asinine.

I agree with you 100%. Train, train, and train. The Blackhawk Serpa holster is a good holster. New people to firearms don't train enough. Practice Doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

I know, I'm just saying that's not what I meant at all. By problem, I mean the people who actually have difficulty using this holster safely. This holster is just as safe as any other on the market, if you don't know proper safety and curl your finger inward like I demonstrated, any holster is going to be unsafe to you. I know not everyone will agree with this video, these are just my opinions on the holster, and I wanted to stress firearm safety

I do not know where the dislike is coming from man. What you are explaining is good practice and to some extent, common sense. When I first started to shoot, even before I shoot a Firearm, it was a old Sheridan 5mm air rifle, my father would always scold me on keeping my finger along the side, off trigger. Good video

Some people take some things I say the wrong way I guess haha :) It's alright, or they don't agree with my opinion, which is also fine. Thank you for the kind words! I have a lot of younger viewers, and some viewers just getting into carrying, so I really just wanted to stress safety. Thanks again!

Oh yeah! I forgot about that part lol! I still respect that he put it on the internet, knowing the world would make fun of him. I don't agree with him going on Tosh.0 though.. Sweet! I'm anxious to hear your opinions on it. It's not a perfect holster, but with training (like anything else) it's worked great for me for open carry.

Well I live in Nj, CC is out of the question, and also I do not have a handgun that is suited for it. But hopefully in a few years or so I will move up north, I hope to apply for CC then.

What was funny about Tex is when he said the first thing he did was call his mom "then called 911". He just had a goofy slant to the whole subject. I have seen one cop shoot himself and heard of others shoot themselves and heard of at least one military person shoot themselves but none of then tell the world. I called my mom first then 911 lol. The mommy aspect is what made Tex get so much attention I think. I plan on filming a Serpa video also but I will show another issue that is a problem.

the problem is not the serpa alone, it's not the 1911 design alone. if you are only going to have 8 rounds why not just carry a 357 mag revolver. that being said if you are going to carry a handgun. NEVER EVER RELY ON THE SAFETY FOR SAFETY. my personal carry and what i feel is the best design, not saying brand but design for carry is one like my beretta 92. there is no pulling that double action trigger pull by mistake even if you are misusing this holster. my personal 92 no longer has a safety, just a decocker. safeties are not safe in a defencive situation at all. the 1911 by design is an excellent target pistol. its also a terrible carry pistol due to having the only two options of cocked and locked or empty chamber. cocked and locked is always going to be a bad idea with a hair trigger in a panic. tex shot himself due to the flaws of both the serpa and 1911 working together to create a bad situation.

If that's what you took away from this video, you should probably just re-watch it. He's saying if you can't use this style of holster without apply an excessive amount of force on the trigger ( that of which could fire the gun ) that you're not safe enough to carry any gun in any holster.

" A problem with this holster" as in a problem with your trigger finger hinting the trigger when you draw, not " A problem with this holster" like you just don't like the holster fr what it is.

Problem as in, you have had an accidental discharge, not if you don't like this holster. If you're having problems retracting your pistol from this holster, you'll have problems with any holster, because you're not using proper safety measures, and if you're not using proper safety measures, than no you shouldn't own a gun. So, you took my statement the wrong way :)

Yes...the Blackhawk Sherpa holster is safe. It's the people who take the safety off and then holsters a firearm into the holster. Holsters don't take the safety off, people do. Improper safety training is the problem and not a holster.

You are using your finger to push a button a centimeter away from where you are not supposed to put your finger. That is a design flaw. The end.
